Brendan Fraser has been cast in FX’s anthology series “Trust,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Fraser joins in a leading role and will star opposite A-listers Donald Sutherland and Hilary Swank. The drama hails from the Academy Award-winning team of Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy and Christian Colson.
The first 10-episode installment of “Trust” tells the story of John Paul Getty III, heir to the Getty oil fortune, and is set in 1973 when the young Getty is kidnapped in Rome and his mafia captors are banking on a multi-million dollar ransom. The series is described as being equal parts family history, dynastic saga and examination of the corrosive power of money.
Fraser will play J. Paul Getty’s private investigator, James Fletcher Chace, who is eccentric, but is a master fixer who hails from Texas.
Sutherland will star as J. Paul Getty, the great oil man and founder of the Getty family dynasty; Swank will portray J. Paul Getty III’s mother, Gail Getty; and Harris Dickinson will play kidnap victim, J. Paul Getty III.
Fraser is gearing up to juggle multiple projects this summer. In addition to “Trust,” he is also a series regular on AT&T Audience Network’s series “Condor” from MGM Television and Skydance TV, in which he’ll star alongside Max Irons and Mira Sorvino. Fraser is currently filming “Condor” in Toronto, and will be back-and-forth in the coming months from that set to London and Rome where “Trust” is shooting. The FX series heads into production overseas in June.
Most recently, Fraser appeared in another premium cable series with Showtime’s “The Affair.” Other recent projects include “The Field” and “Texas Rising.” The actor is most well-known for his role in the “Mummy” franchise, plus other films including “GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra,” “Crash,” “George of the Jungle” and “Bedazzled.”
“Trust” is written by Beaufoy and will be directed by Boyle. Both serve as executive producers with Colson. FX Productions, Cloud Eight Films, Decibel Films and Snicket Films Limited are behind the project.
Fraser is repped by Gersh, Brillstein Entertainment and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.

John Paul Getty III's sister says the upcoming series makes it appear as if her family was complicit in his 1973 kidnapping.
John Paul Getty III's sister is demanding that FX hand over episodes of its upcoming drama series Trust for her review, and claims the show makes it appear as if her family was complicit in his infamous 1973 kidnapping.
In a letter obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Ariadne Getty's lawyer Martin Singer claims the series is "a cruel and mean-spirited defamatory depiction" of the family.
"It is ironic that you have titled your television series Trust," Singer writes in a March 15 letter. "More fitting titles would be Lies or Mistrust, since the defamatory story it tells about the Gettys colluding in the kidnapping is false and misleading, and viewers rightly ought to mistrust it."
Danny Boyle's 10-part series, which premieres on March 25, stars Donald Sutherland and begins with the kidnapping of then-16-year-old Getty.
Singer says Trust defames the Gettys by portraying them as cooperating in a kidnapping that left a teenage family member mutilated in order to "dupe" J. Paul Getty out of millions. Even if the series doesn't explicitly state Ariadne and others were complicit, Singer argues that it is defamatory for even implying it.
"You are using a false version of the Getty family tragedy for entertainment for your own financial gain," Singer writes. "That is indeed ironic, since one of the themes of Trust is to portray my client's family as greed-driven."
Singer says Ariadne wasn't consulted for the series, and he is demanding that FX immediately make all of the episodes available for review.
FX did not immediately respond to a request for comment

AND IT'S FUCKING INFURIATING
Finally, we arrive at the one cringe-worthy element that plagues “Trust” from the moment it’s properly introduced in the series’ second episode: Brendan Fraser’s performance as Fletcher Chase, the ex-CIA spy played in Ridley Scott’s film by Mark Wahlberg. Fraser’s participation in “Trust” is so inexplicably silly and ill-conceived that thinking about it for long stretches has a dizzying effect.
Chase, as portrayed here, is a toothpick-chewing, Bible-quoting, flag-toting Texan, the sole cartoon in a show otherwise grounded in some level of heightened realism. He’s barely competent, everyone regards him as a doofus, and it’s inconceivable that J. Paul Getty would ever, in a million years, have hired this guy to be head of his security. And Fraser’s take on the overly-patriotic Southerner is laughable — hammy to the point of being truly embarrassing. The word “miscast” has never been as appropriate as it is here.
Not to mention the fact that he’s always wearing a giant cowboy hat. And sometimes an American Flag cravat.
One has to surmise that this is a choice, that Boyle wanted to include this larger-than-life character in “Trust” for one reason or another. And while the performance is bad and the writing bad and the cowboy hat bad, Fraser’s presence is never not entertaining. He’s having fun doing whatever he’s doing here; Boyle’s camerawork is as stylish as ever, and it’s totally captivated by the actor’s eccentricities. But even if Boyle is intentionally using Fraser as a sort of comic-relief decompressant, the bottom line is that this performance is unquestionably out of sync with literally every other element of the show and that it makes the overall product a lot more difficult to take seriously.
While it’s not the case that a good film couldn’t be made about these events, Boyle certainly knew what he was doing when he decided to board a TV version of the Getty story. Notwithstanding the inexplicability of Fraser’s sore-thumb performance, “Trust” is the definitive telling of the Getty story… of the past few months.

Without giving anything away to the uninformed, Chase is here because the Getty grandfather and grandson have been separated. Wearing a cowboy hat and sipping warm milk from a bottle, Fletcher begins and ends his hour with a direct-to-camera address (another piece of Boyle flair, though this one was suggested by Fraser).

Fletcher is a fish out of water in his western duds surrounded by distinguished old fuddy-duddies, but he’s so comfortable in his skin and confident in his abilities, he’s the life of the party instead of the odd man out. Fraser plays him with a charm absent from the rest of the characters; he can be earnestly laughing over a stranger’s game of Indian Poker seconds before a life-or-death meeting he’s meant to facilitate, but he’s not slacking on the job or overly assured. He’s ready, and oddly enough, it feels like Fraser has been ready and waiting to play this part. The actor hits each telling shift in Fletcher’s casual nature just right.
