Also /v/ and /sp/ roster updates are on the way however roster updates aren't mandatory for all teams until Winter next year.

Thank Christ I can post now, I wonder what changed their minds. Back during the first one someone asked and got no response, someone asked shortly after the final game and still got nothing. I asked about a month or two later and got no response then a couple of euro users saying they had no interest and to leave them alone.

Is there a guide anywhere about all the various aspects of preparation I keep seeing mentioned? Names we have, but is there a kit template anywhere? And what's with things like the goal horn and ads? How does an actual cup go down when the big day(s) arrive?

Here is a kit template, goal horns are songs played over the stream when a team scores, most common is just a youtube link to a song, same with anthems, they're just played when teams are making their entrances. ads are those little ad boards on the sidelines, they're only optional if you want to make one for whatever you wish.
For a simple team, come up with 23 players (11 starters, rest are bench), decide which two should be ranked gold and two be ranked silver, decide their positions, have a kit (you can multiple like home and away, even alts), a board logo, a board anthem, and a goal horn, you can have multiple if you want one for specific players. Once you decide on all of this, let Cotton know or make a thread here to dump your stuff, he'll plug the stuff in and you'll have a team with a standard formation and what not. If you have someone make your own export, you can decide on formation and strategies, of course you could also specify that to cotton too if you can't get a copy of the game.
