It's a real thing, it's not like total mind control or reality substitution like in movies though. It's more like hijacking a certain normal mental state where we just autopilot shit. The classic example is when you're driving home from work, and you took all the right turns, but you were lost in thought and don't actually remember doing it.
Hypnosis can alter behavior over a long period of time, but really only through the power of association and shit, and you need to give your consent to go under, it's not something you could force on someone.

Bullshit. Just like in normal life you can manipulate people to do shit they don't want to do. As a general rule of thumb: If it's possible in the real world it most likely also works under hypnosis, probably even a little bit better.
In sects there are lots of examples of people being brainwashed to do things they had refused doing before. You can also do that with hypnosis by using the same tricks.
That being said it's not trivial and takes a lot of time and personal attention. I don't think any pre-recorded audio file on the internet can do that, or at least I haven't come across one gets even close to doing it.

Also the brainwashing done in sects doesn't need hypnosis to work and I'm not sure hypnosis is intentionally used in any sect, maybe concepts similar to it like spiritual tances or something like that. Hypnosis takes some practice to get right and therefore probably doesn't suit the system of a sect.
