Eh, drones are no impressive feat.
Just gotta make sure that each opposite prop spins in the same direction, and the one to the side of it spins in the opposite direction.
Now planes, on the other hand…

I think drones are pretty impressive, this video explains some relatively recent developments which made them possible and shows some of what drones (quadcopters) can do ;
https://youtu.be/C4IJXAVXgIo?t=19s
Its pretty easy to fly them as long as it isn't too windy.
I've had some experience flying radio controlled helicopters ,but when it comes to airplane models, that's something I haven't looked into much so it would be great if you could give some intro to that.

Now, quad copters are relatively easy to fly. I've made and flow one myself. They're just expensive due to needing 4 motors, 4 ESCs, and a special receiver. Planes require some knowledge. You don't get the automatic stability, or get to hover in spot with a plane. You have to know how the wing works, where the balance goes, prop size per motor, everything is in a delicate balance to fly.
Now, don't ask me about tricopters, I'm baffled about them.

There have been a number of close calls lately involving drones and passenger aircraft. I refer mainly to this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-33612631
What do you think can be done to better inform drone users as to where drones can be used safely?
To add further, as drone usage increases in the future, would you expect to see these types of incidents increasing in frequency?
Finally, I don't know anything about drones - can you just buy one from a store or are you required to have some kind of permit first?

I think jet powered passenger aircraft is mostly obsolete.
The airliners use machines that are big and bulky, loud, dangerous and polluting because they run on jet fuel (sometimes with additives) which burns up leaving trails in the sky.
My dream is to see commercial jet liners laid off.
That said, drone users should still be aware of where they're flying and take precautions to avoid incidents at this early stage of development.
Drones can be bought and flown without permit.
Experiments with more advanced software/hardware than common in store bought drones has shown that drones can be a lot safer alternative for flying in the future.
They can have programming and proximity detectors to avoid collisions and fly in groups to collaborate towards certain goals.

The best way to stop drone accidents is to stop selling and advertising them as fucking toys. The average hipster who lays hands on one instantly believes he's a master drone pilot, and whatever he does with it will piss nobody off, and he can do whatever he wants with it.
Honestly, I say take RTR quad copters off the market altogether. If you wanna buy one, you atleast have to know how the goddamn thing works.

As they get more common people should get better educated about them. Better instructions should be provided, not just in manuals but with signs and ads.
You can't really stop progress but you could help people understand what can happen. Some people might do some stupid things with drones or multirotors but its like that with most things, be it cars, planes or boats.

The difference with planes boats and cars is that it's only the hobby-grade stuff that can deal real damage. Their higher price puts off stupid acts, and forces the first step in learning to use it. The line between toy grade and hobby grade drones is very blurred, I can't even see it myself. I don't believe in some others ideas, like licenses for them, but come on . They should at least distinguish between "piloting" and "barely in control"

Tricopters are interesting in that they only use 3 rotors. The rotors might be inclined to provide stability.

Hexacopters and multirotors with more than 4 rotors can provide additional stability with flight which makes for smoother filming and photoshooting when using a camera with a drone.

The "exploding" part had me worrying about what it might be about at first, but this seems pretty cool actually.
