There is such a thing as suspension of disbelief.

Leaving the power at "I see everything in atoms" didn't make any sense to me because you need to zoom in to see them.

While still letting her be able to "see" her general surroundings, it would've made more sense to do this.

>An area of my sight focuses on objects like an election microscope, and I'm near blind to anything not in that radius

The premise was still cool though.

Nature of Nature's Art, a series of webcomics by Zachary Braun. I'm honestly surprised in all the years I've been browsing furry-related places I've never seen his work mentioned. It's a real shame too, as what I've read so far has been fantastic.

Each picture is a page from a different story. I've only read Lycosa and Solar System, however.

I'm still really big on The Sprawl. It's slow paced and the characters are pretty flat, but I love the designs and environments, and the whole comic oozes atmosphere. Also, it's sci-fi/horror, not a lot of webcomics are doing that.

There's something very retro about the art, too.

Yeah, it's not just a weird amalgamation of human and animal features either. It's something that's viscerally wrong about the faces and the shape of their heads. Neither humans, nor animals, or anything inbetween should look like that.

Taking an animal's head and anthropomorphizing it looks far better than the reverse.

At least they tried unlike My Life With Fel where it's literally humans with different colors and animal ears on top of their heads.

 No.4484

>>4474

Honestly, I really feel as if this is an enduring issue of people not bothering with studying anatomy before thinking they can draw animals. I can't even begin to try to imagine what kind of horrifically mutated skull would form a face like THAT.

Go check out reMIND, it blows the water out of most web comics in general. It's not fully "furry" but it has talking animals so it counts. It's from a Dreamworks artist so the quality is already at the professional level most amateur fur artists will never reach.

>she gets exposed to the concept of sex

>she "researches" it

>it culminates as her thesis

>surprise, everybody hates it

>remedial schooling

>fugs

>timeskip happens

All in 10 pages.

>Should I read another finished story before reading syconium. ?

If you'd like. World building elements are scattered around in each story, so you'll usually learn something new in each one that can be applied to other stories for more context. However, I don't feel that any of these terms are critically important for understanding the central themes of the story. For instance, Syconium is the first story where we learn how an alembic can function. This is only passively brought up in the first story, 10%+. Conversely, the Halo Brain is a major plot point in 10%+, but there's little focus on it in later stories.

Also, there's a glossary on the main site if you need it.

>Am I supposed to know the characters already? Do they come from another story?

Nope, each comic is its own independent story. Same goes for the characters.

>Where are they exactly?

They're on Earth, like most of the other NofNA stories. Most locations in these series are usually vague places only known by simple names, e.g., "Yellow Dunes West" etc. In Syconium's case, the story mostly takes place in a brothel outside of an unnamed town.

Sounds like you're in the exact situation I've been in. I actually started my comic though, I just don't have the motivation to keep doing everything alone. It's surprisingly tiring to keep drawing panels with the same characters over and over, I keep trying to think of interesting angles and stuff but then it becomes more time consuming and difficult to draw them which is counter productive to the goal of making a regular comic. In the end I just keep making sketchy pages and not finishing them, which is sort of fun in itself, but they're not really presentable.

It's funny, I was just thinking not too long ago about how it would be cool to have a story like "Warriors" but where the reason we focus on all the animal interactions is because all humans have died off in a nuclear Armageddon. I love it when an idea I love ends up being done by someone else already, because lord knows I would have never gotten up off my ass to create it myself.

One thing though, did he end up getting caught up in some drama? Some of his posts mention him celebrating his 800th supporter on Patreon, and now he's down to just 100. I notice that happens sometimes, but there's never many clues on what caused the exodus of support.

I find this comic a bit perplexing. The same guy did another comic called Sandusky, it was about a guy who adopts a cougar as a kitten and then proceeds to tell the casual every-day adventures that they have together. It was super slice-of-life and not really special. But I loved it, it was cute and simple and really fun.

He then upgrades to this comic, which has more complex characters, a more elaborate story, super-heroes, and life-threatening adventures, all this build up to what should be a far more interesting story.... And yet, he somehow manages to make it far less engaging and less interesting. I wonder if it's a "taking itself too seriously" effect, which contrasts with the super silly nature of Sandusky. But whatever it is, I'm finding myself less and less interested in checking into progress on the comic each week.

Which is a shame, because when I first heard he was making it I got my hopes up.

I started reading this but I don't get the thesis, they have to prove concepts? And the energy resource is magic?

 No.26252>>26253 >>26290

>>26096

Which story are you reading? It sounds like you might be reading Syconium, and if that's the case, I lazily summarized the first ten pages, and a few other things, here: >>14068

As for the thesis, "magic", and currency, all of these are apparent in different degrees depending on the story.

Animals that attend a college must create a thesis at the end of their term. The subject of the thesis is something of the animals' choice. For Meander, it was a incredibly self-destructive metanoia, and for XX, a risky art piece. Regardless of the subject, it's always a concept or method that is intended to be helpful or needed in society.

Another important element in the NofNA universe would be the seemingly supernatural styles. These styles aren't magic, and are only existent on a mental level. At their most basic form, an animal can imitate another animals' features, even down to their weight: This is called a lease. Past that, things only get more bizarre. There are also common styles based off of nature itself, which are called alembics. At the farthest end of the spectrum there is a phenomena called telenoia. A telenoia is any style with the ability to affect reality directly, instead of just mentally affecting the observer of a style. Lastly, because of the mental nature of styles, their effects (except for telenoia) can be denied. This is only possible if an animal can see through the exclusionary nature of a style.

Then there's the currency, which thankfully, is much more simple. Animals pay each other with time, collectively known as credit. As far as I know, I think minutes are the smallest unit of credit, while weeks are the largest. I can't remember if there is a concept of years in NofNA, and there's never been a transaction in the story of more than 50 weeks so far.

A ledger is just a record of the credit received and given between animals, sort of like a checkbook but between peers.

And as for the addendum, it's separate from the Prime version and is currently being finished up. Honestly, I'm not really sure why the Prime version is even a thing. >The updates are too fucking slow though.

Pretty much every webcomic worth reading suffers from slow updates, and the most ambitious suffer from inconsistent update schedules as well. Pretty much the only exception to this rule I've found has been Sluggy Freelance, and even that's been suffering this past year as the author has gotten older and is trying to wrap up the main plotline with a ticking deadline to meet.

Other than Lackadaisy, and Sluggy Freelance, I also read Dan & Mab's Furry Adventures, which if I'm honest I'm only reading now because I read it as a teenager and I want to see how it ends. Non-furry stuff I read includes Unsounded, which is relatively consistent but has to go on frequent hiatuses because the artist burns through her buffer very quickly; and Three Panel Soul, a comic that suffers because it's (sort of) based on the real lives of two people with full-time jobs.

I think this is pretty much just a problem with the standard webcomic format: The more frequently you update, the less ambitious your art design and storytelling can be. You can't do full-page spreads with gorgeous artwork and huge story updates every damn day; not unless you have a team of artists willing to work for free. As much as I hate Sabrina Online, at least the artist had the right idea by releasing comics in batches every couple of months. Honestly some webcomic artists would do a lot better in the medium of graphic novels if the publishing world wasn't such a nightmare of marketing-friendly censorship and copyright headaches.

Also I've noticed that there's a tendency for my very favorite webcomic artists to also work as artists in the video game industry; I don't know if that's a coincidence or if vidya is just the new monster that chews creative people up and spits them out again confused and still burning with the need for creative fulfillment but not endowed with the tools necessary to achieve it.

Just found this one on e621 for some reason even though it's completely SFW.

It's honestly fairly well written for a fan comic, most of the canon characters used manage to stay close to their actual personalities and the main OCs get interesting the further along you read.

Shit hooked me pretty hard and fast, which is impressive since I was literally in the middle of a solid fap when I started reading, seriously no idea why this was on e6.

I know it only saves a little, but c'mon man.

You can save 20KB on the first page by indexing it, it might seem like peanuts but that's 20KB you can use to store more pages and 20KB less for your readers to download.

If the image does have over 256 colors, it usually tries to pick the most common ones and converts any leftover colors to the closest one it does have, which can get ugly. Pics related. What program did you use?

I can't really tell the difference between those two you posted, but the original either has 256 exactly or more than 256. Either way, it took a little over 80KB off the filesize.

I emailed the author and he said that he does try to keep the filesize down with a 'conversion program', though I don't think he knew about indexing before I told him. He also said that a lot of images have too many colors for indexing.

Also, some lore-related stuff: The moon didn't form as it did in our reality, but there is still a moon. Author said that the story of the moon would be told at "the very end of the NofNA saga."

>What program did you use?

The only thing I know that could do it on Linux: GIMP. I'm not sure how good it is, but I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows any better, native programs.

>I can't really tell the difference between those two you posted

Yeah, they weren't the best examples. Here's a few where there's quite a difference. Even the indexed image is slightly larger than the original.

>The moon didn't form as it did in our reality, but there is still a moon.

I've always wondered what created the moon in NofNA, I bet it'll be some kind of ridiculous telenoia or something. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason turns out to be something fairly mundane either.

>indexing a JPG

You shouldn't index lossy formats, it looks bad and makes larger files. PNG and GIF are usually what get indexed (GIF can actually only store up to 256 in the first place, which means they're usually indexed but they aren't always. Technically they can have more by breaking it up into chunks, but it's rarely done)

Indexing works like this: You give each color in the image a number, and use the numbers to build the image instead of having each pixel have a value for red, green, and blue. It tends to only work up to 256 colors. See pic related.

It is possible for gifs to 'break' this rule and have more than 256, by breaking the image up into multiple blocks each with their own 256 colors. The file can get really big though, and it might not display correctly.

I feel like the whole tumblr gender/sexuality shit is inevitable, the only question is if it'll affect the quality of the comic too much to be readable.
