Are OC species pure autism, or do they actually have some potential for things outside worldbuilding or "I'm So UnIqUe" spergs? Aesthetically, I do at least think some of them look neat. And for the ones that actually have some narrative purpose, I'm generally a fan of the lore built up around them.

Depends what you consider "pure autism" I suppose. They can be interesting aesthetically and even better if they have fun lore. They're not much different to mythical creatures like dragons, save for the consciousness we have of their creation.
Not to imply they have to be a race that enters some sort of popular canon. It's only annoying if they're pushed onto the world in a commercialistic sort of way. Otherwise it's good ol' creativity at work.

I suppose most of what I'd consider "pure autism" is stuff that's essentially just a pre-existing species but with an extremely gimmicky trait or extra body part. Anything more original or better designed, like Sergals, Yinglets, or Protogens tend to be much better- though they're arguably meme species unto themselves.

How is being original or different a sperg trait? I mean, the furry fandom is pretty autistic in general but honestly someone wanting to stand out or someone putting creativity into their costume isn't really a marker of snowflake traits, more so a marker of creative intuition. Lighten up.
But yeah, making your character/creation's sole trait being "to stand out" is generally a pretty terrible idea- since that's based more on a shitty attempt to game public opinion rather than making something that you want based on your own tastes, motivations, and what not. Just make something because you think it looks cool or you like the symbolism behind it- not because of anything you think would make it get attention or vaguely defined ideas of being different.
You'll be happier that way.
