「華人」這個概念自古有之，不過早先不稱「華人」，稱「唐人」。「唐人街」就是這麼來的。
「華人」這個詞的確來自日語。清末，日本在兩廣口岸搞人口買賣，把中國人販賣到世界各地，譬如，販賣到美國修鐡路。
日語稱中國為「中華」，日本把這些中國奴隶稱為「華人」/「華工」。
後來，中華民國官方採用了「華人」這個詞用來指當時新發明出來的概念「中華民族」的族裔。
