Okay lads, so I recently joined the rowing team at my university.

They just had us go through a round of elimination for new guys again (a test on the erg) and if anything I don't like my numbers.

My split is decent-ish, I was well on the safe side of the men's team but by far relative to my height and weight I should've been pushing with more power.

In short, I am not putting enough HIP DRIVE into every stroke as I should be, and that's not because I don't want to. But my body hasn't figured out how to do it, I can't utilize my legs as I should be.

So, does anyone have tips on how to push through the legs on the erg? Any tips or exercises and drills. How to push for maximum hip drive on the erg and in the shell.

My background doing powerlifting just doing SL and I stopped long ago hasn't helped me much

Also rowing general /thread/, ask questions, help others, 'mire splits.

the whole hip drive thing is a total meme until you actually feel it without trying. yes there is proper form pushing with your heels and legs and then keeping your shoulders relaxed (read: lats flexed) and your back totally straight through the curve backward and finishing with your outer elbow high.

my advice is to take steroids. if you use them without an ester (Test no ester, and/or Test suspension) or otherwise short ester you will be able to use them nearly year round so long as you know when you're getting drug tested by college sporting ofifcials. Your holidays should be great opportunities to dope.

Rower for 7 years here, started at 11. My coaches trained olympians, and we're British so Gold and Silver medallists. The absolute best exercise we ever did for explosive leg power were star jumps.

Not just any star jumps. No boyo.

>start in deep squat position on toes.

>hold for 10 seconds.

>perform one explosive star jump (from squat to air to squat again = 1). Get head up high looking forwards.

>hold squat for 10 seconds again.

>perform 2 full ROM star jumps (all the way back down to squat, all the way up again explosively).

>hold squat for 10 seconds.

>2 again

>hold

>3 star jumps

>hold, continue up to 5.

It doesn't go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. It goes 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5. In other words 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5. Each with a 10 second squat hold in between sets. No breaks. No standing up straight or stretching legs. Advanced level; go back down the progression.

Good luck getting above 4x4, and good luck walking the next day. This will train your nervous system and leg muscles to be extremely powerful, and resistant to lactic acid (you'll find out why). If anyone tries this please report, I'd like to read how it went.

The deep squat position is even lower than pic related, as far down as you can go, resting your butt on your heels. It's a fairly stable resting position, although after a few sets it won't feel like it.
