music videos are great. i can't abide by the style of the one you posted though where it's mostly shots of this guy making stupid fucking hand gestures, don't like the music either

but the nature of a music video allows the person putting it together to be incredibly free and abstract, just visualizing the music in any way they see fit, which I think is great. allows for a lot a creativity you probably wouldn't see emerge in a regular film

vid related, directed by michel godry, all his music videos are great, even if you don't like his movies

I like some scopitones. They were early music videos which you watched in a jukebox.

The concepts were often pretty basic, but here's one of the better ones IMO. It contains music by King Crimson and Pierre Henry

I don't watch them very much any more, but I do like the music video format. It's fertile ground for creativity and at its best it's a vehicle for experimentation.

Röyksopp - Remind Me has a unique concept that particularly resonates with me.

> Directed by the French motion graphics studio H5. It features a day in the life of a woman working in the London's Square Mile solely through infographics; this includes labelled close-ups of everyday objects, product lifecycles, schematic diagrams, charts, and is generally illustrated in a simple isometric visual style.

It is, check out the video by bjork, using the 360 technology

iirc music videos were the first formats in which the digital coloring were first used.

There's nothing inherently wrong about the genre but they tend to be conceptually incredibly shallow. I imagine its because they're usually produced for the mass market as companions to equally shallow pop. Sorry to be an antagonist but everything ITT are clear examples.

A lot of arthouse incorporates sound very heavily, they're essentially music videos, so I don't think the nature of the genre is an excuse to be formally and conceptually uninteresting.

Here's an example by Ryoji Ikeda

Here's a "music video" separated from commercial interests, part of the Japanese electronic avant garde - ie Ryuichi Sakamoto. The visuals (and sound) are clearly inspired by MTV pop flair, but also engaged with more radical techno-industrial aesthetics. They reflect and develop each other.

Actually, its a live VJ performance. The music and visuals are both part of the same performance. Tangentially related, but the visuals are by Haruhiko Shono who would go on to develop an interesting audio-visual exploration in videogames (L-Zone)

Finally I'll just share a contemporary example that follows partly in the same vein of the previous. It's a sort of dual performance between two artists, with the visuals engaged in the same thematic content as the audio, rather than merely attempting to develop a visual or narrative expression or companion. Maybe you can consider it a reintrepretation or translation of the song into a CG movie, pollinated by the Tabor Robak's own personal concerns as an artist, and constrained as a companion piece to the soundtrack. Similar to the previous, both artist's aesthetic modes and concerns helpfully align. A Daniel Swan music video could have easily fit in its place.

There are some other interesting videos to point out coming from contemporary artist / musician collaborations, for example the one's Jon Rafman has been doing

Actually I'll share the Rafman + Oneohtrix Point Never vid here since it relates to *chan, I'm sure many have seen it already

https://vimeo.com/75534042

It's more in the vein of a traditional music video, primarily using the audio as a constraint and narrative inspiration, but at least it's coming from a more interesting artist than Gondry with more engaging music than Bjork's…

Is there a good streaming music video channel? I'd like to be exposed to random stuff.

I randomly saw Four Ton Mantis long ago and found both the artist and the director quite appealing.

This video reminded of pic related, its kinda funny since holly is always described as the female opn to the degree that i think the similarities of her video was on purpose. She and OPN have this "consciousness" or "awareness" of whatever they are doing to such degree that it feel very meta.

The descripton on the video shows the very academic side of holly herdon, shes basically that professor that says "the blue of he curtain is the sadness of the scene"

Holly Herndon: "So much of Chorus was constructed by spying on my own online habits. It felt fitting to invite Akihiko, who I had been spying on online for a long time before my approach, to contribute the visual treatment of the piece."

Akihiko Taniguchi: "I was interested in exploring the textures of daily necessities and the embodiment / physicality of the computer and Internet. One of the most striking contemporary images is that of the desktop capture, which is seen commonly on YouTube as part of software tutorials. I like the shots of desktops that are poorly organized and 'lived-in'.

Referencing one of my earlier pieces "study of real-time 3D Internet", I considered how it corresponds to the personal environment outside of the screen and how particular it is to my identity and my friend's identities. I asked several friends to photograph their desktop environments and then rendered these images with custom 3D software, shooting video by moving throughout this virtual space. This video is a collection of records of life of friends and their Internet environments."

Herndon: "I love the idea of depicting the mundane and quotidian in high definition, and how evocative and individual each of these spaces are. Thinking about intimacy and the laptop is familiar territory for me. I've also been thinking a lot about privacy, particularly in light of the ongoing revelations regarding the NSA, which add a more sinister sub-narrative to Akihiko's piece.

The most crucial conversations happening in technology at the moment focus squarely on our work space, our email, our iSight and our smart phone, and how much we can honestly claim those spaces to be ours at all in an era of indiscriminate and imperceptible surveillance."

video related is another by holly herndon in which she tries to capture the "quintessence" of today's world, society, technology, aesthetics, and so *sniff*

On this video she gives the direction to Metahaven, an Amsterdam based art and design research studio to give this very specific look and feel.

Im gonna post some videos that I find visually interesting, i hoe that you comment on them, even if there shit please lets discuss why they are and how much they are.

https://vimeo.com/119920980 Im not sure to call this even a "music video" since its title A Very Short Film, but since it uses music as a vehicle to do so then why not. Surreal, to the point that theres scenes that are disgustingly obviously taken out of famous surrealist paintings but since the point is to show the layers and flatness of the shot they work as a visual contrast.

Well, im really not sure if theres a meaning to this video at all besides "embrace the void" kek, bu maybe was the idea, the very idealist, very Hume-ish of "experience"

https://vimeo.com/64448741 A music video entirely made with gifs, the most compelling part is bout 2:40 in which he flips the gis back and forth to give that sorta 3d look.

We can they talk about that the video took on the bland and ignorable part of life and their repetitiveness.

https://vimeo.com/13947776 our third video of this post is Marcos Brambilla's cut of Kanye's Power music video. You guys probably have seen this video, it starts as a close up that slowly paun out of the shot to reveal neo classical pillars then to show people dressed up in robes in some abstract background, all of this with an "uneasy symmetry" and a "groundless floor".

What can i say about this video that havent being said before? from all the symbolism with sword about his head surrounded by an halo taking directly at George Condo's paintings, the idea of "judgement", to the final shot with all the characters in a very "depthless" romantique style. The persona first, then the strong and timeless pillars that appears to be endless and streght and width and length but that they are actually not, they are only an illusion of the greater "real" "background" .

Im gonna try to post 3 new videos every couple of days or so, to try to compromise myself with his board.

>>5179

the sad thing is that theres probably as much discussion on /tv/ as in your comments. You critiques are as empty as they can get.

I agree that drakes video might have not been the best choice for me to start this thread, but why not? there hasnt been any post given reason on why is was so bad besides /tv/ crap "i dont like it".

If the mods would have ask me to change the video, hell even make a new thread subtitled "only videos with less than 40000 views" i would jump in it too, no problem. If they didnt like any of my posts and want me to stop you could have just say so mods.

changing the video just like that, specially as a command of someone whos only contribution to the thread is pure insults its pretty disappointing. funny that my video gets deleted but the insults not.

The video was changed because I had not watched it until now, and I agreed with the poster that it was not a great representation of /film/. I did not delete the thread since there's a tangential relationship to filmmaking. (To hide a thread, click on the [-] or Hide Post option.)

Yes, the mean personal insult -- made by a different person – is still here. There have been several mean insults on the board, but unless someone was habitually disruptive I have not removed those posts.
