>Not him, but this is a monthly comic. I can do a fuck-ton of stuff in a single month. There's plenty of games I can play, plenty of TV shows I can watch, plenty of other comics I can read. In order for a monthly comic to keep my attention, it should actually be worth the wait. Single self-contained issues are more likely to do that. Even two-part stories can do that because the first issue will have an obvious build up to make me want to read the next issue. Year-long arcs just end up causing individual issues to feel like boring filler, therefore why bother reading any given issue when it doesn't matter?
>"It's for kids" doesn't invalidate this either because kids, while not as braindead as adult management keeps thinking they are, are more impatient while adults are more likely to stick with a long-running story to see where it goes. A long-running story needs to be actually good on an issue-by-issue level and that's Ian's biggest flaw when he's writing longer stories, even when they're only four issues long like in the Sonic Universe arcs.

Why?
And yeah, more self-contained issues can benefit comics that only has one issue coming out in a month & Ian's writing of year long stretched out arcs won't please everybody, because to some, it makes issues feel like filler.
That being said, I'm not one of those people. I'm not as hooked into the IDWverse as I was post-reboot Archie, but I'd also be lying if I said that I'm not interested in the whole concept of liquid roboticization & what's gonna happen with the Dr. Starline character.

You stink of cuckchan. Having said that, it doesn't matter if they're self contained stories or if it's a longer arc, both can be shit and both can be good. Personally, between a good comic with self contained stories or a good comic with longer stories, I prefer the latter because for me it's the opposite: if there's no overarching story there's no reason to care and it's not going to keep my attention for long, while a longer story can be made to be much more satisfying as you go finding out the details of it, though so far I don't think IDW has done it particularly well.

Depends on the company I guess, but I don't think it's all that uncommon. Sega previously did it with their US branch and I think with their UK branch too, and I remember other big companies (either Sony or Nintendo) having to let go of one of their main offices as well a few years back. In the case of Sega I think they spent a few decades in their previous JP offices.

Ideally, I would love for Sonic comics to have an overarching story, but in order for that to work, there must be a beginning, middle and end. Obviously this won't happen in an ongoing series, because there's no end. And it certainly won't happen in a series like Sonic where everything must be reset to status quo by the end, in a way that satisfies the SEGA corporate overlords. and yes, you do stink of cuckchan

This literally means going back to the 90s when Sonic had no canon. As in, Sonic could be "anything" and the games either reflect this or just doesn't have story to begin with and never tries too.
Too bad this couldn't have worked out in the slightest because storyfags are the most autistic part of the fanbase, meaning if their story they liked wasn't "canon", they will lash out and actively demand their "canon" story back and stay domentant.
Since Sonic is a gaming mascot, he cannot end, and wanting that is shallow af. So like what Mario did, just don't bother and let people make autistic shit for themselves and Mario stuck with just going raw, great gameplay. Which Sonic could have done instead at this point imo.

>I want it to be episodic in the exact opposite way. Sonic has some kind of problem to tackle and friends show up for him to bounce off of and to complicate the scenario. Every month should be worth the $4 price of admission, a story that, if not one-and-done, is substantial or entertaining enough to stand on its own. This month Sonic's playing detective with the Chaotix. Next month Sonic's dealing with a haunting. Next month Sonic's on a treasure hunt. Three month arc: Sonic is sent to a spiritual realm by a magic artifact and has to remotely save the day by possessing Metal Sonic.
>It should be wild. It should be wacky. It should be all things Sonic, which is confident spontaneity. It shouldn't be afraid to be like classic Japanese Sonic in tone one month, Adventure 2 the next, and Forces another. The insanity should be embraced in order to create an unpredictable series of adventures celebrating creativity and using these simple characters to their fullest.
R-R-Refute this.

Well Sonic DID have a canon back then, but SEGA seemed more loose in terms of what people handling the IP could do with the franchise.
In reality, every decision made is gonna upset some section of the fanbase. Personally, I would like to see them just do whatever they want but I can see why SEGA would be hesitant to let things have more "creative freedom," so to speak.

Wanting Sonic to be more like Mario in terms of storytelling is far more shallow. I'm not asking for the franchise to end. I'm asking for it to have a storyline that ends. And then we get a soft reboot. Zelda does this all the time.
And even Mario has tried to inject some actual atmosphere and meaningful storytelling into the series here and there. Koizumi tried to push that type of stuff for Mario to make it seem more Miyazaki-esque with Galaxy, at which point Miyamoto threw a tantrum. Odyssey brought it back, somewhat. Super Paper Mario is another example of how good Mario writing can be.
Sonic would be best to push past and reject any notion of "autism" or "cringe" and try to be like Kingdom Hearts in terms of tone and storytelling.

>Wanting Sonic to be more like Mario in terms of storytelling is far more shallow.
It doesn't have to be. S3K was far more narrative focus than Mario ever really had even tried to be, hell the only comparable is not really a Mario game, being Yoshi's Island. Sonic already had a way to tell a story without words and it flowed seamlessly in gameplay. Even the Advance games handled this. I'm not suggesting Sonic should talk like the hottest take right now makes it seem like, but there's a big difference between a story and a narrative. You can have a game series with good narrative, and spin off media with story telling.
To loosely quote Shay May; "without being conscious of the consequences, creating media for Sonic that actively change the perspective of what Sonic "is" to people, means you're dividing the franchise to have preferences, that later on, just causes more problems controlling then not". In other words, making Sonic "do whatever" means he has no identity. And it's just autistic to claim Sonic ""should"" be anything they want, because Sonic should be marketed consistently, where if you simply "don't" like it, you're not the audience and you should look elsewhere for a series that has what you're looking for.
To simplify it into a sentence, Sonic cannot appeal to ""everyone"", he's not a hivemind, nothing is. With all that said, I was the person that actually suggested making Modern Sonic tonally like Kingdom Hearts on halfchan, granted I can't claim I'm the only person on the planet that could think of the same idea, but overall, this still has a risk and reward thing that has to be handled correctly instead of saying "Sonic should be x, forget about all those other things fans liked over the years because what I want is more important than what they want." This devide can only cause more trouble if done poorly, especially if SEGA just keeps making half baked games to begin with.

That's really not fair, because it implies Sonic should continue to do the exact same thing until the end of time. Mario knows how to appeal to both a casual and hardcore audience with simultaneous series going at the same time. The casuals get 3D World and NSMB, while the hardcore get Odyssey. Odyssey is a FAR different game, in both gameplay and tone/narrative, than 3D World.
You see this in other franchises too. Is Resident Evil 7 anything like RE1 or RE4? Is Mega Man 11 anything like Mega Man Zero? Is Breath of the Wild anything like Wind Waker? Is Jak 2 anything like Jak 1? I don't think anyone would say those games went too far from the status quo, because they're all fantastic games and they found ways to make their drastically different styles work. Audiences and target demographics are never static, they are always shifting. I'm not saying Sonic should be ANYTHING, or that constantly changing the gameplay for each new installment is ok, but it should still have a very large range for experimentation.

>Resident Evil 7 anything like RE1 or RE4
No, but that's because RE isn't named after Chris Redfield, nor is the direction of the series directly tied to him, it's linked to the STARS force.
>Is Mega Man 11 anything like Mega Man Zero?
No because it's clearly dictated that the events of the Mega Man games, from X, to Battle Network, is either different timelines or different universes.
>Is Breath of the Wild anything like Wind Waker?
No, but it still shares similar connections throughout the Zelda methos, from WW's Deku children to the secret Master Sword location from Skyword Sword.
And Jak and Daxter was basically an example where the series ended. Like Mother, although with that example it still took place over different timelines
All of these examples miss the one key element that's different from Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic stays congruent to the same general timeline (aka, no massive timeskips outside of Sonic CD, from a gameplay perspective, and Sonic 06 with Silver and Blaze's story elements), and also doesn't represent an ongoing narrative outside of the one time it was attempted loosely during the early/mid 2000s. Before SA1, and after 06, Sonic's stories and tones usually stayed contained within the game itself, like in LoZ e.g, where whatever happens starts in the game, and concludes in the game. There was no need to drag a previous plot point from a previous game to play the current game knowing about this. And ultimately, this can lead to an easy way to build an expectation that, as the player; could I get Sonic and co to save the day, or is their world doomed? That's the biggest contender to the argument for story telling, the act of a narrative end cancels out the original consensus of Sonic back in the 90s; Eggman is dooming the wildlife, and it's up to the player as Sonic and his friends, to stop him and save the day. If you made a game where you HAD to play the next game (aka, part 2) just to get a prelonged "conclusion" that might never really end to begin with (basically Archie and what Kingdom Hearts falls into), you have to ask yourself as the player "what is the point even playing as Sonic and co with the idea my actions can change the outcome of Eggman's demand for conquest, when that might never be answered because other subplots drives the narrative forward when it really doesn't have to."
Personally, I rather have a game with a straight forward narrative, that still makes it clear to me "unless I beat this game, Sonic and co will die" and that's all the consequence I really need to sell the idea here. When a game does something like, in Sonic 06, Sonic gets stabbed in the back by Mephilsis, I know in the back of my head "Sonic can't be dead" because this would mean Sonic 06 was meant to be the last game in the series. Figuratively in highsight aside, of course SEGA was going to continue making Sonic, so I couldn't expect anything less than that I had to revive him somehow, meaning the consequence of him even dying to begin with was pointless drama for drama sake. Unlike Shadow in SA2, where before Heroes happened, I could easily believe Shadow was going to stay dead, because his adventure has ended doing what he sought out to do after 50 years of torment over the lose of his family. Sonic, as even his character dictated in Sonic X; he's all about the journey, not the goal. He said it himself. He's not meant to end, he's meant to stay on going forward and ever, and so far, through thick and thin, he actually has been doing so thus far. And to me, this mentality can easily be down through gameplay for a game, basic yet well thought out narrative that allows me to play this game knowing I'm doing so not just because it's a video game, but there's an instinction of some kind, and for be, beating Eggman and stopping his Eggman Empire from being completed is enough for me. Just have fun interactions with the cast along the way and I would be satisfied for someone that ultimately just want more gameplay and cool, new fantasy-esque levels to play through.

Depends on a lot of things, but mainly on the capacity of actually delivering good, quality games. It's good that Classic is its own thing and it's probably the only way to make classic fans happy, but it'd be pointless if they delivered games on par with Sonic 4, and the same applies to Modern, it's pointless if they just keep delivering games on par with Lost World and Forces. With Modern it could be even more complicated because it encompasses several gameplay and music styles and different ways to tell the story and structure the game, but still, the biggest problem is whether they can actually deliver a good game.

I want the animations style of Sonic since Colors to Forces to move on. Imo, I honestly don't hate it because it genuinely feels like I'm watching a Saturday cartoon (basically it animates like it's a 3D cartoon with moments of 4 wall breaks), but it's just not something Sonic should be doing all the time, if at all. Sonic should have more dynamic moments mixed in or mostly all the time, to incite the idea he's always going in an adventure.
If anything, this is really because they've been scruturing games since… well, 06 techincallly, to have Sonic and co to have lots of exposition for the sake of it, instead of making it clear the big focus is to get to Eggman/main threat as guickly as possible. In fact, Forces should have been the find of game that handle this the most, but fails exactly because of this problem. Like, most of the in level dialogue should have been for these cutscenes to set up the action, rather than having random OC number 201345 say "we are losing, we are winning, OC you're amazing" when playing the game doesn't really reflect this, it just looks like I'm autopiloting through the level.
Basically, alongside the writers, they need more technically advanced in their craft animators for Sonic. The only people that even remotely come close to this seems to be the CGI animators used since ShTH and even the Sonic Movie. But obviously, they have too much demand elsewhere to really considered for this, so they need new staff for the in game stuff.

Those two statements contradict each other. Obviously you're not going to be convinced that if you don't beat the game, Sonic and co will die, because you're an adult. For me, the weight of Sonic's death does not come from the fact that he might stay dead. It's in the characters' reactions to his death, the quest to try and bring him back to life, and the idea of what Sonic might be seeing in an afterlife.
Personally I despise the notion that Sonic should be more like Kirby, or that the IDW series should be like one of those Eurotrash adventure comics like Asterix or Uncle Scrooge. I don't really have an argument for wanting Sonic to have a storyline, at least a miniature one, that has an ending that feels conclusive to the series, other than that it would be cool as fuck and I like story in my games. Yes, I could seek other series that do that. But fuck you: those series are not Sonic.

Apparently they're being recorded for the sake of future viewings. But it was crazy, especially giveen that the tetris block won. He was backed by The White from SMT to become the new messiah and erase everything, and also erased all its opponents that it had defeated. When Miku lost to it in the last round of the night at 19 minutes, Miku was also going to be erased. Then Knuckles showed up to save her as the screen turned white with Live and Learb playing in the background as a sort of SA2 ending throwback.
Miku deternined to save her friends and get back to performing in concerts, uploaded herself to a mainframe and is now fighting with Glados and Shodan (I think) for control of 8chanmania S2. With Kiryu, Ouya's friend and mentor MIA prior to this match, she finds herself alone again. Sad stuff

Making fun of Sonic or doing parodies is low-hanging fruit, so there's a lot who go for it.

I know Sonic is a low-hanging fruit, but is coloring Sonic's arms blue supposed to be part of the joke? Is it supposed to signify that you don't like Sonic therefore are purposefully being inaccurate to his design? What's the deal?
And yeah, I know a lot of people think they can outdo SEGA, but there has to be some kind of logic they're following for that particular aspect, and I don't understand it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the current designs, but we have been stuck with them for quite awhile. Things do get new looks every now and again and we saw that with Boom. Some fans just like to throw their hat into the ring, especially with the backlashes to the last two redesigns, Boom and the movie.

I don't like Shadow using realistic guns, but I don't like the cartoony guns either. Either way, they don't feel like a natural part of his moveset, because they don't feel "Shadow". I think Shadow could use guns in a way that feels natural, though. The Shadow Rifle is my favorite weapon in ShTH because I could easily see this as just being a special, personalized weapon Shadow has. Kinda like the guns in Jak 2. As long as they don't shoot real bullets, I'm cool with it.

Wow, for once I found someone that shares the same "if I had to keep this way" kind of opinion about Shadow characterization after SA2. There's things I understand that are different in tone from the 90s era and 2000s, and for me to accept ShTH, I'd take exactly what you said. Stylized weapons would at least work in the realm of Sonic where Eggman's creations exist. It's not my forte in the fist place, but it's the best case compromise for Shadow then just accepting hyper realistic AK-47s in a world with cartoon animals played for straight instead as some parody comedy.

Good Friday Morning
I got a question for you lot, I've been watching Shay May's retrospective of the Sonic series again and I gotta ask. Is their any person in Japan that could make a coherent Sonic game going forward at this point? I'm not talking about any programmers, or level designers, I mean understand what was liked about Sonic in the past, and can just stick to the direction people ask for? I feel like it's going to take some talking to SEGA to let them understand marketing Sonic like say, Nintendo does with Mario with platformer based, mainline games, and RPGs like Paper/M&L series, or LoZ with realistic like Zelda games with cel shaded, cartoony games like WW, would likely be the best way to let the developers focus on the best strengths of what fans like without it clashing with each other. Classic Sonic has gotten a better handle with Taxman and Stealth, so now this should allow the Japanese market to handle something they want to see in Sonic moving forward better. The last game that was made not with old fans in mind directly was Sonic Unleashed. Outside of the Werehog, it was one of the last games with a tone people didn't actively hate, in fact, was considered just as good as SA1 over the years. It's not too serious, but not too dummy down for children, and doesn't feel like it's fighting between itself like say, Sonic Lost World's narration. Would you like that direction for Modern Sonic again, or no? Personally with the gameplay style of Adventure without all the bog, I think as long as they keep Classic era to the classic fans, it would do Sonic a good amount of help for the 2020s on forward.

I feel management is too chaotic on the Sonic side of Sega to allow for the creation of solid products anymore. They have been adrift for years with no clear direction for the franchise, no objectives in mind, no roadmap or vision. They have ditched all that in the hopes that the additional freedom would give them more margin of maneuver for the creation of individual games in the immediate time at the expense of the future, but even then they've failed. Changing all of this would require a profound change in the people behind it, which I can't see happening.

Actively reminds me of Ted from BSC. Weird how these people act so similarly, and kinda aggressively so. I'm not trying to sound rude, but I find it odd how classic era fans don't react this "loudly" towards whatever Sonic is, they just ask for polished gameplay. It's not about the locations, it's not about the first zone of Sonic 1, it's only the momentum based gameplay, which 3D Sonic has long since dropped after SA2 at most. It's bothers me how SA2 is hailed King of Sonic just like S3K is, when both games to me just cement how divided Sonic is image wise. I don't hate either game, and I do prefer S3K over SA2, but it's not that detrimental to ask for a 3D Sonic game that either plays like, Utopia or Islands, or just expand on what SA2 did, just to ask for "more of the same" without it feeling like a rehash no matter which era you use. Both eras are nearing 20+ years old, both are "outdated". It cannot be "nostalgia" for classic era but not Adventure, that's bigoted to claim that. What's the common denominator of the argument is this. "More of Mania, more of SA2" should and always mean "more of the best of" these games. It's something fans had a problem of understanding since SA1 imo, that we cannot be clear what "more of" we mean, and as a result, SEGA listens too hard and removes all of Sonic's friends or other shit, because no one asked for this, it's just what people blindly blurt out. That's why companies shouldn't listen to the fans, they should inherent and understand what the fans want by trusting their product and delivering what they believe "defines" Sonic. It's that simple, it's why Sonic Mania is structurally solid while Forces isn't. Hell the team of Sonic Mania officially made their own studio now under the name based on a Knuckles' Chaotix song, which is primarily the entire vision Mania was founded on. They know what they are doing, that's why they made a great game. Any other reason that game was made the way it was done was all SEGA execs forced in, because they don't trust Sonic as a brand.

Eh, there's definitely Classic era fans who can react as passionately, but in recent years SEGA has started catering to more Classic-era fans.
I think part of the reason why some fans of the Adventure era & forward react a certain way is mostly because of the fact that SEGA has continued to mess up the Boost gameplay & throw in things that weren't that well received (like Classic Sonic in Modern Sonic games), or force out half-assed games just to give a "we're sorry" statement like they're actually gonna learn their lesson. I do agree on the whole point of "fans should ask for more of the best of these eras as opposed to just bringing it back," but it can get kinda hard to really come to a consensus on everything that was considered to be the best of the Adventure era (just to give an example) when people have their own reasons for liking that era.
Not to mention, if we were to ever see a return of the Adventure era (or any other era for Sonic) it's probably not gonna be as easy as Classic Sonic since Taxman & Stealth were able to prove to SEGA that they can make a full game before ever doing Mania. It's gonna be hard for a 3D Sonic era to receive the same treatment when so far no one has managed to make a full-length 3D Sonic fangame. Even projects like Sonic Utopia has been in development for years & Islands has just recently popped up.

The issue is no 3D fan game gets done because it needs a budget. It's been nearly 40 years 2D games existed, that's why you don't need a budget to make one and finish one. Hell the best ones with tons of content like AM2R took 10 years to make. It's not about "if it can be finished" it's about making it solid, well thought out and being passionate to make it in the first place. All of these elements exists in these fangames, you just need time or money to make it finishable, which you can clearly tell even AAA companies don't let the former happen for marketing reasons, so devs needs money in exchange. This not being understand by people really bites me in the ares and undermines how hard it is for these game devs to monetize making games near annually. It's no different from animators.

At this point, when even the fans know better about making sonic games, you know something is wrong.
It's like the old saying:
"It's not the writers who needs to listen to the people, but the people who need to listen to the writers. And he says: "You can't rush art!""
Sonic was a sellout the moment he left the production phase for the very first game, but what SEGA never planned on was that his popularity as a character would exceed even Mario.
SEGA was never bright on making what they wanted to make, but what the people wanted, and that's already a problem. The only time they didn't listen to them entirely was the Dreamcast Era. The reason why it failed is because they started listening to literally "everybody else" and dropped out because they were scared of going up against the three other contenders without taking a hefty, yet healthy risk.
It's been sad looking at where this company's headed to, and it's only going to get more depressing when that Movie Abomination hits the cinema.

>Why put in everything Adventurefags have wanted for ages in Forces when you ignored them up until that point?
Because Adventurefags are all grown up, have jobs with disposable income, and are getting nostalgic for the late 90s/early 2000s and Sega knows nostalgia = profit from Generations and every other company cashing in on this. Why stop at just Classic Sonic? Throw in something for the Adventurefags as well. Who cares if none of it makes sense or is implemented well. They just need to see Shadow and Chaos 0 and they'll buy it. Same with Classicfags. They see Classic Sonic and it's an instant buy. That's what Sega believes since they're so out of touch with the fanbase.

Imo I honestly don't like Modern era and it's not because I want Adventure era back. Sonic being a comedy doesn't make much sense when it's implied the idea that Sonic looks like a cartoon hedgehog, determines how Sonic's tone should be dictated. If that was the case, Classic Sonic era couldn't have made Sonic 3&K work so well and no one would have liked SA1/2 at the time. Being a comedy feels like Boom; a joke to shittalk how the series became over the years and that's insulting. It truly reflects SEGA doesn't care about Sonic seriously to me, making longtime fans not want to support them anymore.
Mania for example didn't treat Sonic like a joke and now they are making their own studio. They know more about being a serious company than SEGA does to me, and honestly, many indie devs are starting to, making me want these older companies to either add in new blood they desperately need or just go out of business. As a ex worker of K-Mart, I'm glad Walmart took them out of business, they were clearly outdated as a company.

However, they still fall for that comedy trap on occasion. Pic related for example is only funny until you realize it's the same insult to Knuckles's character that's been propagated in meme culture for the last 10 years. Mania still does not have the same sort of atmosphere 3&K had, and likes to shove Sonic into overly wacky scenarios. Not to mention Mania Adventures, which had the same writing team.

Knuckles was never retarded but at the earlier parts of the timeline he wasn't sure who to trust was good or bad guy, that right there, nor the moments in SMA is NOT being retarded, there's a massive difference. He has and always had, trustment issues, he's gullible, that's his character. It's just considered retarded to people seeing someone be so gullible without learning from their mistakes for so long, that's the problem that Sonic X perpetrated all thanks to Amy's reaction to that with Knuckles back in the Metarex saga, which even I fucking hated when they did that to poor Knux, which is why I loved Cosmo so much because she understood what Knuckles was coming from. It's all thanks to poor direction all SEGA's fault from the start, not exactly long time fans using 20 year old source material when it "wasn't" that dumb, like Sonic OVA for instance.
In other words, 99% of people think Knuckles is retarded, this isn't the fault of the Mania team, it's the result of SEGA's own retardation. Be thankful he doesn't talk in those medias and says the stupid shit like in Sonic Boom, comedically or not.

The thing is, the jump dash is a great way to quickly gain speed. In comparison, the spindash takes too long and doesn't give you the same sort of edge. You don't have to worry about being slowed down by slopes and such if you can quickly jump and shoot yourself forward. You might argue that makes things too easy, and discourages the player from having to work harder for their speed, but fuck man, it feels great.
As for homing attack properties, while it does kill your momentum, it also opens up opportunities for level design, because of how you can bounce off enemies to reach higher areas. And it also creates a sort of "rhythm" that feels good to do. Bouncing from enemy to enemy in that one section of Metal Harbor feels awesome.

No disrespect, but all of that is better done with the drop dash since that doesn't just ignore the level design, and Utopia with how momentum is carried proper from bouncing off said enemy. I used to enjoy that very SA2 section, but it's just a spectacle for spectacle sake, not actually aiding what people seem to have a big hangup on for Sonic to constantly go fast. At least the other two game examples flow with Sonic's momentum, instead of pre program set speeds. The funny thing is, Boost era actually has momentum carrying homing attacks. It only happens on airborne enemies and balloon targets, but it's there and still has it balanced to work as spammy as SA2 did it.
Forces is the only game so far to revert back to momentum killing homing attacks.

This. I look at this video here at 1:36 and think that would promote so much more versatility if it was stronger and carried previous momentum for further, higher jumps instead of always forcing you to a preset move. I mean, if you want to take it slow and spam it back to back, just start the chain with a slower speed. But if you're skilled enough and can bounce off one badnik and just make the open gap on your own, that's great as well.

So this would confirm Sonic X is technically canon to SA1/2. Basically, Sonic and co are aliens, despite Gerald Robotnik and Eggman's connections, and "multiple worlds" have been canon since SA1.

I remember when I started getting into Sonic, the official Japanese sub was kind of new I think and I wanted to watch it really badly but it was only on Hulu and they wouldn't let me watch because of not being burger so I started trying proxies until I found one that worked and had to do that every day until I finished the series. Worth it.

I can see SEGA making Sonic racing games a bit more common in-between games if TSR does well.
I'm kinda hoping we get some more unique spinoff titles in the future, however. Been way too long since the last Sonic fighting game.

I don't want to doomsay but no. It doesn't seem like Sega has anything in store for Sonic other than 1 core game every 3-4 years, a long running mobile game, and a racing spinoff whenever they feel like it. Given how same-y the franchise has been for the past decade, I think they're scared to try anything new

>>13285
I kinda doubt it. Most of their side stuff for Sonic seems to be more focused on the mobile side than making proper spin-offs.
At best, I could maybe see them make some different things if the Mario & Sonic Olympics series ends. They did skip Pyeongchang
2018 and I have a feeling SEGA wouldn't have cared to have the license if 2020's event wasn't in Tokyo.

Sonic's history is plagued with spinoff games, so I don't think they will just outright stop making them, but I would think how well TSR does will have an effect on things. They don't seem to have any ideas on different spinoff games they could make, though.

Let's be real here. There's a half dozen or so 3D Sonic fangame engines. The ones that are easiest to mod and use will be the ones with the more active users and interest, regardless of how finely tuned the engine is under the hood compared to the others. A very decent chance the engine could be dead in less than a year or two
