Arguably, in my opinion, the very best there ever was and ever will be. He was invincible, could win with almost anything on the field and the won the championship with the smallest point difference, several years older than what the average driver retired at back then.

Jody Scheckter. His phenomenally aggressive style may have led him to be crash prone, but he has a sense of humor and a personality. He deserved to win multiple championships, especially since he was offered Prost's seat at Renault. He was the last championship winner (even race winner for some time)for Ferrari until Schumacher. Notably Scheckter is the only race winner in a 6 wheeled car, even though Ronnie Peterson drove the Tyrrell P34B in the following year.

Especially considering that he nearly won the championship in his first full season, and that he had many other close calls in very difficult situations (as the single car for Wolf in its first year, and as the sole race winner for the P34). He also crushed Depailler and Villeneuve. I think it's funny to imagine that the 1973 British Grand Prix crash was caused by a future world champion.
