>German car giant Volkswagen is close to agreeing a deal to take over the Red Bull Formula 1 team, says BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan.

>The agreement would see VW buy the team and build its own engine, while Red Bull continues as a major sponsor.

>Jordan says a VW engine would not enter F1 until 2018 and Red Bull would use Ferrari power in the interim.

Just a theory, but I think we found another reason why Mercedes didn't want to sign with Red Bull. If Red Bull gave some "details" about the engine to Audi, it would cause a massive shit storm since it's screwing over a German company for another one.

Still, what's stopping them from giving them details of the Ferrari engine, other than the McLaren-Ferrari spying shit? I'm more than sure that Red Bull will do some underhand stuff a lot more covertly and under wraps. Oh and not take blueprints to a printer store.

Given how much Honda seemed to have learned form the Mercedes engine, I don't think Ferrari would be that worried about anyone stealing their tech. VW can get understanding of the packaging and layout but how the internals (which is the important part) they might get a slightly better than vague idea of it. Also, Ferrari will obviously have full control on how that engine is handled at RedBull, they are not that stupid and RedBull will have to comply as they are the customer team.

Cue RBR getting vexed about the VAG engine not being ridiculously amazing straight out of the box.

I just hope VAG comes in as Audi, so BMW is lured back to F1 for a German civil war.

>Number of times BMW has been an engine supplier in F1: 2

>Number of times BMW has built the most powerful engine in F1: 2

Dat ///M power

If they were smart, they'd allow several engine specs just for more variety but nope, gotta make engines boring and expensive by over-regulation.

If this is how VW obeys federal law, then I wonder how loosely they'll obey the FIA's rulebook…

>The Environmental Protection Agency accused the German automaker of using software to detect when the car is undergoing its periodic state emissions testing. Only during such tests are the cars’ full emissions control systems turned on. During normal driving situations, the controls are turned off, allowing the cars to spew as much as 40 times as much pollution as allowed under the Clean Air Act, the E.P.A. said.

>Over the next year, E.P.A. officials said, owners of the affected vehicles should expect to receive recall notices from the company, including information about how to get their cars repaired at no cost to them.

>The recall covers roughly 482,000 diesel passenger cars sold in the United States since 2009.

To be fair, the power delivery and reliability of the BMW engines (both times) were quite sub par.

Especially their turbo engines. All that power doesn't mean anything when you are going to spin most of it away in smoke.
