How can you watch your logs get deleted after you and your partner climax? How can you waste your gorgeous high-cognitive prose on just getting off on it? Imagine your immersing character-driven actions in a choreography-heavy book or a book full of spells and abilities. Or simply describing the wildlife and environments with your immersive detailed prose.

If I read one more narrative-driven book without tension and concise prose I am going to snap. I don't understand how those idiots think they can write character actions, tactile feelings and emotions through indirect storytelling perspective. Bunch of hacks.

And you… you could become editors for books. You could become movie directors for character actions. You don't skimp on the details at all compared to all those talentless hacks.

>Long rant about how talents are wasted on writing fapbait and we should write and direct the great media works of the modern era.

Okay, I'm gonna lead this off slow before I go completely off the rails:

1. The percentage of people that can write at an acceptable quality (mechanically, not creatively) is perhaps in the low single digits in the ERP community.

2. Frankly, this is the big one…

IT IS NOT FUCKING MARKETABLE

DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT PEOPLE WANT COMPELLING, MASTERFUL WRITING WITH A QUALITY, THOUGHT-PROVOKING STORY WITH WELL-DEVELOPED CHARACTERS? ARE YOU LEGITIMATELY BLIND, DEAF AND STUPID? HAVE YOU DEVELOPED SOME KIND OF PRION DISEASE YOU DROOLING, SMOOTH-BRAINED IMBECILE?

People don't want it. People like the same-old rehashed plots and one-dimensional self-insert characters that we've seen TEN FUCKING BILLION TIMES. Star Wars was a B-grade movie that people found fun to watch because OH LOOK EXPLOSIONS AND SUPERPOWERS not because there was compelling character development or interesting drama. Michael Bay and Shia Lebouf don't go on a SIX-SEQUEL-STREAK because Transformers is an intellectually engaging piece of art, but because OH LOOK, NOSTALGIA AND REALLY COOL FIGHTS. How about the absolute slog that Harry Potter was? Seven Books and literally billions upon billions of dollars of investment for what is effectively a westernized high-school isekai anime. Twilight? Fifty Shades? It's absolute fucking GARBAGE and people eat that shit up left and right.

"But why do they like it?" You might ask, "Why do people enjoy voraciously devouring this absolute shit?" Because it doesn't ``challenge them``. It's so simple and easy to digest they can just go total vegetable in front of it and it's spoon-fed to them. They feel clever or smart for getting a half-assed reference or joke or piece of the little plot puzzle. Sure, if they rubbed a few brain cells together and jostled a neuron or two, they'd be able to figure out THE ENTIRE FUCKING TRILOGY WITHIN FIVE MINUTES, but they'd rather be potatoes that have to be spoon-fed every tiny piece of media their glazed-over eyes rest upon. Every teenage boy and middle-aged housewife that has grown bored of their oppressive mediocrity wants to feel SPECIAL and UNIQUE so much that they're willing to self-insert as some fucking cardboard cutout of a person in a lowest-common-denominator story that's been remixed more times than fucking David Bowie and Queen combined. It's tripe. Every person that has read more than a fucking airline emergency pamphlet understands that it's all fucking worthless, brainless tripe. That has never stopped ANYONE from eating it up, though.

Okay, let's take a look at ``Arrival``. Big fucking show. Wonderful movie. Villeneuve did really well with this, and people absolutely adored it. It scored well on all points. 7.9/10 on IMDb / 94% Rotten Tomatoes (82% Audience score) / and 81% on Metacritic. A well-made, artful, and engaging film. The shots are good, the sets are well-made, the acting is very nice, really, and the designs are fitting. It's a good movie, and the plot and writing is at least a little stimulating. It's a bit like ``Memento`` but less pretentious. ```It made 203.4 million USD.``` Not a bad sum at all for a budget of about 50m.

Let's look at Twilight. Garbage movie. Garbage plot. Garbage acting. Based on a garbage book. Production values high, but quality is so trash that not even the poorest fuck in India would be caught with it. 5/10 IMDB. 49% on RT (73% Audience rating TAKE NOTE). With a relatively minuscule budget of 37m. It rakes in 393.6 MILLION AMERICAN BUCKAROONIES.

tl;dr people only like simple, easy-to-digest trash that doesn't challenge them or make them feel stupid or bad about stuff. They like stuff that lets them live vicariously though the lives of blank-slate fictional characters.

I got harder fetishes but I'm still very into the vanilla stuff I started out with. I did more long-term play and enjoyed a lot of fantasy scenes while I'm more fond of modern these days. In terms of writing I constantly used semicolons wrong and used 'would' one too many times, but all in all it's not a complete trainwreck.

I've tried non-lewd writing before. Or anything story-based as a matter of fact.

It's a COMPLETELY different ball game.

Putting a few sentences together is the easy part. ERPing has only few variables, and some of them are entirely ignored. You can go half a scene before anybody mentions in what kind of room they're in. It's an adventure without a tomorrow. The next time you run into that person, you just start anew, even if you'd blown up the planet last time.

But a story? A proper story? Plotlines, motivations, paying attention to make sure the narrative makes sense, that you didn't mistakenly overlook a detail that would send the whole house of cards falling down. Every dialogue has a purpose, every chapter has a reason. You want to make sure you didn't put together a Mary Sue, you try not to fall for a deus ex machina, you do all you can to avoid skipped easy-outs like in those horror movies where everyone would've survived if they just hadn't FUCKING SPLIT UP!

The best way to learn this the hard way is to put yourself through a good ol NaNoWriMo. In 30 days, you must write at least 50,000 words that comprise one story. Re-reading what you've written at the end of all this is a big oof.

I'd unironically hire roleplayers for prose and characters, at least for half of it.

You faggots have such a natural way of connecting phrases together that it never feels like reading a tiresome run on sentence.

You also have a way of making even a character just sitting around wasting time have charm and personality.

>>278816

Well then pair your rock-hard ideas with digestable ideas and writing techniques like contrasts to translate your concepts into something marketable. And actually other times it is purely lack of quality advertisement.

Learning to translate ideas is a knowledge that many don't bother practicing.

>Please pass the ketchup and salt

>Spices are for simpleminded faggots who can't appreciate their food for what it is!!

>This is fine cuisine!! eat your octopus, snails and puffer fish.

>But muh pork, lamb and chicken.

Minecraft? Literally Lego's with zombies. BUT placing and removing the blocks feels so fucking natural and intuitive compared to all its other handicapped clones.

LOTR and Harry Potter? Shittiest books I've ever read, but oh my god those movies. That soundtrack, that charm, those wannabe actors who just act themselves(great casting - just pick people who are already those people from the books - genius (not being ironic ))

Fangbone and Star Vs Forces of Evil? Same fucking premise and one is better than the other.

What's the problem? One wasn't advertised well enough and doesn't have cute faggot princesses, it has barbarians and non-cute males.

A little under a decade ago I used to have a group I roleplayed with on an MMO which was where I got my first in-depth experiences with ERP. This group was the first one where it wasn't just me reciting my backstory to a dame before attempting to get them to suck my dick. I actually made storylines with encounters, puzzles, loot… sort of a lite-GM except my character was a part of it (not as a 'solve everything' button, more of a driver for the storylines and often playing as a damsel in distress of sorts).

It went really well for about a year and a half until OOC relationships between the players split the whole group up. Person A liked person B, person B didn't like them back. Person A goes absolutely mental over unrequited lust. Person C who was IC married to person A got angry at them lusting for someone else and that was all it took. After that, nobody wanted to continue our weekly adventures. It really felt shitty that I put all this work into coming up with stories and absolutely nobody cared to continue after the relationship nuke went off.

I also like having something that feels 'complete'. Perhaps that's why ERP is such a draw because people typically have clear goals and if all goes well there'll be at least one satisfying climax. I've tried more long term scenes since then and honestly it's resulted in a lot of blueballing that I'm not interested in repeating time and time again. It honestly becomes too much of a responsibility (in my mind, at least) to see a long term play to its 'end' once it has started. I'd even settle for a mutual parting of ways but it didn't work out that way a lot of times.

Don't get me wrong. I do a few long-term plays here and there but those are with really dependable partners. I haven't completely shunned them for life but I also don't really get a lot out of them especially since I like being able to start a new scene with a new partner without thinking about 'This time could be spent progressing my scene with <such and such>'.

As for modern over fantasy, I just find people think up better characters for modern scenarios. If you want to play a local seamstress making clothing for monstrous clients or the blind ruler of the underground who is submerging towns in giant sinkholes then let's fucking go. But invariably what happens is we get 'elven princess rape bait'. Not that there's anything wrong with that and given the right player I'd still be down but given the choice between generic elven princess or generic uppity schoolgirl then the schoolgirl seems less… creatively bankrupt, I guess? It feels like less of a loss of opportunity to just say you're going to go modern and have a basic character than go into fantasy with perhaps the most trite, stock character you can possibly imagine.

>Person A liked person B, person B didn't like them back. Person A goes absolutely mental over unrequited lust. Person C who was IC married to person A got angry at them lusting for someone else and that was all it took.

Wow, quite the drama. I wonder how A expected to get away with it when C was in the group.

But I suppose all ERP is vulnerable to IRL. Even one-on-one, which wouldn't face issues within the group like this, could still come to an end if one participant gets an IRL partner who doesn't approve of ERP.

>I'd even settle for a mutual parting of ways but it didn't work out that way a lot of times.

What happens instead?

>especially since I like being able to start a new scene with a new partner without thinking about 'This time could be spent progressing my scene with <such and such>'.

What about starting new scenes with an existing partner, for a series of short-term plays with the same person? You could revisit older characters when you both feel like it, perhaps one of you re-using a character and the other creating a new one.

>If you want to play a local seamstress making clothing for monstrous clients or the blind ruler of the underground who is submerging towns in giant sinkholes then let's fucking go.

What sorts of modern characters do you consider equally creative?

I'm unsure whether I agree about generic fantasy being worse than generic modern. Perhaps I just don't care about the loss of opportunity than you. To me, elven princess and uppity schoolgirl both feel bland but with the possibility for characterization and uniqueness from good roleplay. So they don't feel that different. Perhaps the question is whether the setting around them enabled more interesting twists and scenes?

>I wonder how A expected to get away with it when C was in the group.

At first we were all treating it fairly maturely. A expressed interest, B said they'd give it a shot, A and B made alts to do their own thing on and C was fine with it. When B said it wasn't their thing, then things went crazy.

>What happens instead?

Either they never turn up again after pausing in the middle of a scene or they want to start a whole new thing.

>What about starting new scenes with an existing partner, for a series of short-term plays with the same person?

Oh sure, I do that when I can. A remarkably large number of people are unwilling to do this, though. But there are also those that do so I can't complain too much.

>What sorts of modern characters do you consider equally creative?

Boy, nearly anyone that has some character motivation. A woman sleeping around with shady businessmen to learn about the whereabouts of her kidnapped daughter. A guy feeding his own ego by pretending to be a messiah and offering spiritual awakening. I'd even be thrilled to run into a twitch user who needs more views so they try to see what they can get away with on stream.

>Perhaps I just don't care about the loss of opportunity than you.

Like I said it's not a huge deal to me either. I'm not a stickler for super original character concepts. Cliche done well is fun for me and I play cliche characters of my own. It's not so much that I dislike the fantasy genre, it's more that I used to seek it out a lot and nowadays expectations are more tempered.

>To me, elven princess and uppity schoolgirl both feel bland but with the possibility for characterization and uniqueness from good roleplay.

I definitely agree with that. I'm just thinking back to encounters I've had with schoolgirls and elves and found them sorely lacking in culture and initiative. With schoolgirls there's been the class rep that's a secret slut, a blackmailer, captain of the sports team, the delinquent who tries to seduce the nerd into doing her homework but he ends up uncorrupting her into a good girl, science-nerd that keeps using you to test their inventions, working as a journalist on the school newspaper and so on and so forth. Meanwhile I'm hard pressed to think of elves that don't boil down to "I'm a long-ear, rape and humiliate me!". It could very well be just my experience, but it's lowered my expectations none the less.

ERP writing is usually written while horny and rushed with minimal editing. It's about on par with the first drafts that I write when it's late at night and I'm tired.

After slamming out an RP session I feel a lot more chill for quite a while, and it at least feels easier to be more deliberate and careful with my other writing. I don't know whether or not this is just a placebo effect but it's nice, whatever it is. Then, unlike in ERP, I have time to edit my writing. I can put it on the metaphorical shelf for a while and come back to it with fresh eyes to edit. I can pass a copy to other people to look over and get their input, etc. By the time it's done, it's been looked over a lot. ERP posts do not get this treatment.

I mainly write fantasy but I like to dabble in creative nonfiction short stories between bigger projects.

My writing improved dramatically, but I actively went into it trying to steal, copy and take as many points to what good writing is in that sense and fucked around a fuckton there. I also had a writing-related job after 2 or 3 years, I don't quite recall.

I could easily sell my smut writing, especially since I am into /fur/. The market there is thirsty, throws money at anything and the competition is weak as shit.

I don't because I am lazy and have a comfortable living doing very little at the moment, however.

Twilight. Fifty Shades. Any YA novel that obsesses over the attractive (of course they are) secondary character's features. You don't find a lot of actual porn in there because you can't slap a PG-13 rating on it and nab everything from the 10-year-old that thinks they're smarter than their classmates and wants to appear sophisticated to the 40-something loveless housewife that regrets her entire life and wants to self-insert as someone infinitely more interesting. Also, get picked up by a major media company and sell out hard. What's your integrity worth compared to a life of relative leisure?

50 Shades of Gray, but I don't hate myself enough to try to write something like that and after the success of 50SoG the market is loaded with knockoffs anyway trying to feed on the scraps.

There are a decent amount of people who want to read smut but they are split up into different niche demographics who rarely interact. You can pick one of these niches, but whatever you try to market to them you have to remember that they can get written porn for free in fanfiction, so they aren't likely to spend money on you unless you can market yourself well.
