In my experience, becoming popular is mainly a matter of finding a niche. What are people looking for that isn't very well represented? What's in demand? Of those, what would you be willing to play? Personally, I am a male who exclusively plays females - very much because of this stigma, I just don't see myself being able to play a top level male, so why bother - and I accept average - even low - players who are playing male characters. I don't particularly discriminate between male characters and female characters in what comes to the quality of the player, and I think it's weird that some people do exactly that.
If I had to take a stab at it, I'd say it's simply because you can't really play a sub male, and expect everyone to get on board with you (if your character is straight, that is). Female characters will easily get play whether they're subs or doms, but more often than not, at least in my experience, if you're playing a male character, you're expected to lead, and leading is harder than being led.

Because most males are heterosexual or at the very least lean towards being gynephillic. Your character's body alone isn't enough to cause attraction in most cases if they're male, so you need to excel in other areas such as scene/character creativity, writing ability, or charisma. It's as simple as that. You can complain about it all you want but that very complaining fuels people who dislike male characters and only reinforces their beliefs. Is it unfair? Yes. Is there anything you can do about it? No.
Writer better, approach better, be more charismatic, and you might get as much play as the average pink. Accept that or play shemales. If you believe your writing is better than average then work on your approaches instead. Maybe your scene ideas. Anything to make you stand out. Understand the other perspective and what makes them interested. Consider it like a business deal as dry as that is, the deal has to appeal to them, there has to be something in there they can't get from anyone else but you. Create your "ideal" pink profile and play it for a while so you get an idea of what approaches characters like it typically get and how you can stand out.
