Hey /erp/. I have a problem where, if I get significantly invested in a roleplay, sometimes I end up getting super verbose and churn out mini-novellas on every post. I always tell people not to worry about post length and that they can post as much or as little they like in response, but I feel that sometimes it's intimidating or frustrated to be faced with walls of text that take half an hour or more to write up.
What can I do to consistently reduce my post lengths? I normally average about 200-300 words in three paragraphs or so per post, intros and finishers are usually about 500 words. But certain situations can get me worked up well enough to spend literal hours writing posts that can top 1000 words on occasion, even if my partner's only doing half that much. Is it just a matter of discipline and learning how to condense, or should I not worry about it and let people enjoy the paperbacks worth of smut I'm writing for them?
Unfunny fresh OC related.

Stop describing everything. Do you do something that I call "Disney writing?" By this I mean stuff like "Oh how he loved every titillating sensation of…" because that is what I've seen commonly in people who are writing so much, writing as though you are a spinning Disney princess mid soliloquy. Also spending "literal hours" on 1000 words is pretty bad as well because that means the writing isn't just flowing and you are thinking about how to describe things. If any of these apply to you, just describe what matters and move on.
Are you a fiction writer by any chance outside RP? I'm a research writer and in my field it's short and sweet, so it's tough for me to write a lot because our field doesn't appreciate too many details. It's the reason why I stopped RPing for some time, because people don't seem to realize that it's not either 1 line responses or walls of text and I couldn't match that level of verbosity. Though, it's rare I even get a partner who describes anything, so I find myself doing the same.

It's not necessarily bad to be passionate about your writing, but there are times to show restraint and hold back the novellas to keep a session from lasting half the day.

First of all, if your partners are enjoying it and you can keep it up, then there's probably no need to stop. But learning to distill the point of your post to the bare essentials, spending time tweaking the phrasing and making sure that most of the content revolves around details that are actually important is a good skill, especially if you want to work with many sorts.

I do this a lot, but not because I want to make it bigger, I'm ESL so when writing and this might be just me I think simultaneously in english and my native language, sometimes I think of a perfect way of describing X action/thing but then realize I was thinking in non-english and when translated it wouldn't sound as good or fluid, other times I can't for the life of me recall how to say certain things in english which makes me waste some time trying to google the answer.

>You don't have to described every action anew.
True, but you could always add something new to the mix. For example
The man pressed the woman's legs to her breasts, folding her in half as he continued his carnal assault, her cunt squeezing his cock in a vice grip.
Okay that might of been a bad example, but hopefully you get what I mean. What would you recommend avoiding repeating yourself? Just not mention your character is still fucking another character, unless your character changes positions or intensity?
>Also people don't usually go into deep meditations and drift off into metaphilosophical territory, questioning their existence, getting reminded of someone else's cunt and so on when they fuck someone.
Wouldn't you say that's character and scene related? I agree that it might not be appropriate all the time, there are some exceptions.

>I always tell people not to worry about post length and that they can post as much or as little they like in response, but I feel that sometimes it's intimidating or frustrated to be faced with walls of text that take half an hour or more to write up.
It absolutely is. I can keep up with anyone's post length and I'm comfortable with writing significantly less than them but I also like to do group roleplay and I can't bring these fucking retards anywhere. I swear to Christ, just a few months ago I got this great partner who was very descriptive and appeared eager to include someone else in our scenes.
I told them repeatedly to ease up on the post length because not only will a good number of people be unwilling to match the post length but since our scenes were already taking 5-7 hours to finish a scene it could significantly increase the time involved. These people assure me that there won't be an issue (and yes this has happened SEVERAL TIMES WITH DIFFERENT PARTNERS), and what happens? I start the play off with a modest 1000 character opener and they blast off with a fucking 3000 character post. They always, ALWAYS tell me that they literally cannot write any less. What ends up happening is the other partner drops because it's more than they bargained for.
In my eyes it's just as bad as someone who says they are incapable of writing more than a few sentences yet still wants to play with people who multi-para. Yes, you are going to scare people off because they have certain expectations. Yes, people will definitely feel inadequate and there is absolutely nothing you can do to convince a lot of them that it's fine. If you legit want to play with these people then the best thing to do is learn to fucking adapt and quit churning out shit that is 2-3 times more than they can provide.
Hell there's always one-sided/unfair roleplay if you really want to avoid running into people who will feel bad about you doing so much more writing than them.

I think you would do better to focus on note-based narrative play where you and your partner take turns as story teller. No one owns a specific character, and either of you can control the actions, thoughts, and reactions of all characters in the story. Someone actually capable of writing stories from multiple perspectives would be an ideal partner for you. More than likely you have greater creativity and literacy than the majority of role players. Personally I do not have your patience, but I appreciate your willingness to work with players less talented than yourself.

You can actually do about 5-10k words via 1on1 chat. Character limit in private chat on f-list is 50000 characters. It's 4096 in the public rooms which is closer to the 500 word limit you're thinking of.
Still, we're talking about roughly a novel chapter (and a lengthy one at that) worth of writing for a single post. If that's what they like then all the power to them but it seems weird they'd pump that out and then feel bad about it. 3 hours is a long time to be doing something you have doubts on.

I'd say there are way, way, way too many unimportant and worst of all, uninteresting details which are used to fluff up the writing. It's all very stiff and 'matter of fact'. Take this block of text for example.
"Shapur, Conall, and Valeriya joined him soon enough, and the party set out at a gallop towards the bank. It was only a few blocks, but it was the most nerve wracking part of the heist as far as Ardeshir was concerned. All it would take is a night watchmen spotting the four of them and raising the alarm to throw their plans into disarray, and though they’d chosen the route accordingly there was still that off chance that everything went tits up. Thankfully they made it to the bank unmolested. It was a tall, three story building with a facade of white marble, a large bank of windows dominating much of the front wall on the first floor."
Is it supposed to be a moment of tension? Worry? Careful planning and execution? Fucked if I know because the first moment of action in the whole post is finished within 2 sentences. But the guy can go on and on about freaking masks and chainmail and mounting and dismounting the fucking horses forever. I've seen less yapping about mounting horses in books ABOUT horses.

I usually play scenes involving a significant amount of bondage, so my posts always end up bloated with verbose descriptions of garments, restraints and - when I feel things are not entirely clear - a detailing of how much freedom my partner has lost, or what he can still do.
I've never liked the style of my own writing because I'm unable to leave things implied or up to the imagination of the reader, but nine out of ten partners I had absolutely love the attention to detail.
It's pretty difficult for some(me included) to streamline their writing to the point where it's not only a good read but also conveys enough information for the reader to fill in any blanks with their imagination. I tried slimming down for a while, but just wasn't happy with all the lack of detail. It ended up bugging me more than feeling like I'm losing myself in them.

I love garment details, especially sexy clothes. I have a few clothing-related kinks, nipples and underwear showing through outerwear, wet and skintight outfits, etc. So verbose garment descriptions sounds perfect for me.
I haven't done much bondage roleplay but I enjoy it, so both the restraint verbosity and the details of lost freedom are good too.
