From what I hear, Diamond's got basically a monopoly on distribution right? How much damage is Corona-chan gonna cause the market?

So this is how the American comic book industry dies. Huh, I expected the black horse, not the white one.

Frankly this is a blessing. Under normal circumstances, the kikes in this industry would never have let it die naturally, continuing on in the zombie state it has for years where even the best efforts of cuckold writers like the New Warriors rebooters won't do any lasting damage. Corona forcing Diamond to shut down for even a little while will cripple this sinking ship.

This shutdown of businesses & isolation keeping people indoors means the comic shops are on life support. The plugs will be pulled soon. I feel bad a lot of people will be outta jobs but it's a necessary sacrifice when there's no incentive to keep these businesses open. DC & Marvel have fucked the industry from the onset. They've sucked away all creative variety & wasted talented people on stories that don't matter. Let it all die.

The real show will begin once the lockdown ends. Some customers might not return and other might take their time. There will be people:
>realizing that they they do not care whether they read the latest X-Men issue and finally drop their capeshit habit
>picking up foreign or older books and abandoning or at least cutting down on modern American comic books - especially disastrous if they realize how shit modern comics are and start to advocate for older and foreign books
>moving on to another hobby
>who like extra money more than weekly floppies
>who lost their jobs are can't afford weekly comics
A lot stores could go under, diamond will be at least crippled, capeshit might lose some of the market share, and floppies might die. Marvel and DC would probably be better off mailing books and giving a cut to comic book stores. Indie companies like Black Mask are doing something like that already.
There is also a possibility of new creators and companies breaking into the market by taking advantage of the drought of new content, creating more competition. However, that's not too likely to happen.

Sounds too optimistic, at least on the "older books" bit. Manga might be trendy these days among leddit """"""""""nerds""""""" but most fags of their ilk don't really move outside the comfort zone of what's shilled to them, let alone actively seek old shit (and that's assuming they aren't the normalfags who only care about movies and nothing else). You think people cared about Devilman until (((Netflix))) got their hands on it?

Digital never sells well when there's physical books. With big two comics & even most indie companies there's nothing worth reading anyway. Meaning digital won't have any sort of boom regardless of physical releases being cancelled. Most people would rather read manga.

DC Exploring 'Multi-Distributor Model' to Deal with Coronavirus Crisis
http://archive.is/FUc7o
From DC's release to distributors
>DC is exploring a multi-distributor model to provide us with the flexibility needed during this crisis to get new content to our readers on an ongoing basis.
>In the short-term, we continue to engage in active conversations with Diamond to help us solve the distribution issues that have arisen and hope to get new product to stores that want or need it as soon as possible.
>We will provide additional information about how we’ll make that happen in the coming days.
Other information:
>DC is already confirmed to be releasing some new material - such as the Gotham High OGN - through its booktrade distributor Penguin Random House in April.
>Direct Market retailers have the option - as they did prior to the coronavirus pandemic - to order trade paperback and hardcovers through these booktrade distribution channels.

They've been saying for years that digital is selling gangbusters, but never releasing the numbers. I think now there's a quiet acceptance that, actually, it isn't.
They also say they're selling loads of the "woke" books to scholastic and libraries… hey, guess what other places are closed?

On the other hand, you have publishers that only put out digital comics. French comic publishers are running their own comixology stores, so at the very least digital can be profitable.
Still, in case of Marvel and DC, floppies most likely make them the most money as far as comic book sales are concerned. TPBs are next, especially for DC as they have a lot of evergreen books.

There were actual numbers released for 2018 (http://archive.is/hyKwS), and they were compiled using both bookscan and diamond data. Breakdown by revenue is:
>graphic novels - $635M
>comic books - $360M
>digital - $100M
Graphic novels generate the most money, although a lot of it is likely due to manga and possibly scholastic. As far as sales channels go, comic book stores still generate the most money, but bookstores almost caught up to them. Digital is miniscule and stagnant by comparison. This could be in part because digital comics often go on massive sales or are included in subscription services.

>Marvel Entertainment is immediately "pausing" work on - and the release of - approximately one-third of its May and June comic book issues, a spokesperson confirmed for Newsarama. Marvel's representative said 15 to 20% of its solicited titles would be affected, as some of them are twice-monthly in May and June.
>The decision to pause work on the affected titles, according to the spokesperson, is "to help spread the amount of publishing product over the coming weeks and months."
>Asked when the publisher intends to resume publishing the issues not affected by the pause, the Marvel spokesperson said "as soon as more information is available, we will outline our longer-term plans."
Marvel began telling creators involved with the suspended titles of this decision Friday, and the company spokesperson re-assured Newsarama that "all talent will be paid for their work to date."
