Is it alright for a Christian to listen to music like Schoenberg? I just like it, okay?…

>Can music without lyrics be sinful?

How so?

Music encouraging bad behaviour like most rap music are likely encouraging people to sin I know it's bad.

in what way would it be sinful?

It would be an avoidable occasion of sin.

Whither it is a proximate or remote occasion of sin depends upon the listener. Do you know the lyrics? Do you associate the music with some sinful act? Are you likely to commit actual sin if you listen to it?

Some teach that avoidable proximate occasions of sin are a sin of themselves; like entering a strip club just walking in the door is a mortal sin.

I'm not sure that an occasion of sin is a mortal sin in and of itself unless it's very proximate like the old joke about buying a Playboy magazine just to read the articles and not to lust after the nude women.

Do I know the lyrics? Oh, well I forgot this piece has lyrics. But the real question is if a piece of music without lyrics can be sinful. Can the organization of notes be somehow ungodly? I don't think you'll find sinful lyrics in any Schoenberg works. They are mostly about mysteries of the ineffable. And there is a neat setting of Lord Byron's Ode to Napoleon which is largely about comparing the man who exalts himself (ie Napoleon) to lucifer.

Well, Napoleon was a wicked man, for example, his mass murder of the Carmelites as well as spreading death and destruction throughout Europe for his own vain glory

But so some foolish composer wrote a piece dedicated to him. So was Beethoven's 3rd, IIRC, but Beethoven took it back when the moral failings of Napoleon became more well known.

I don't think it's a sin to listen too. I thought you were talking about some satanic rock music without the blasphemous lyrics.

No, I think if you listened to an instrumental version of The Beautiful People by Marylin Manson for instance that would indeed be problematic because you'd be evoking the original music with the lyrics. My question is more if the organization of notes in time can itself be corrupt and ungodly. And if so, what that means.

Also neither the poem nor the piece are approving of Napoleon like Beethoven's Eroica was originally (nice music history knowledge though fren). In fact the piece was written at the time as a condemnation of Hitler.
