Is selling things at church a bad thing? Like is it as bad as what the pharisees were doing? Personally I don't like it, but I'd like to hear someone else's thoughts.

I do not think the usual proof verses show it's prohibited but I also don't think its in good taste. Commercialized suburban church is undercutting the supernatural nature of our faith.

I think there is room for a guest preacher to sell books in the lobby/narthex but he shouldn't bring it up during his sermon, and I have seen coffee houses operated by the church in downtown areas which provide weekday revenue.

If I were on a committee or a pastor I would vote against a church store if only for the possibility that some conservative member views it as sacrilege.

Sometimes people sell stuff at my church, but only outside of the building and not inside, and not during liturgy.

In the bible example they both sold animals for sacrifice with inflated prices for those who traveled from afar and had money changers because only 'temple money' could be used there not the regular roman money. Thus doubly profiting from the religious obligations of people.

Those things were specially despicable.

Selling souvenirs has nothing to do with that.

It's in poor taste, to say the least. The last Protestant (Baptist) church I went to would sell branded merchandise (much like what you posted), and also have guest speakers who would advertise their own products during the "sermon". One Sunday service consisted of a football player bragging about his career for an hour and then advertising his books for the last 20 minutes.

During my conversion to Catholicism, I was blown away by all the free things I was given by the Church.

>catechism of the catholic church

>missal

>books/pamphlets about advent, lent, etc.

>DVDs explaining the Faith

>rosary beads w/ how-to pamphlet

And countless other things. The last time I went to Mass, they had all sorts of free material laid out, and I brought a really nice Catholic calendar home. I'm not saying every church should be that generous, however I'd argue that turning your church into a marketplace is worthy of condemnation.
