Is there any merit in vegetarianism/veganism? I mean it is allowed by God but is there any spiritual benefit from abstaining from killing animals bred purely for consumption on a mass scale and thus needlessly suffering when it isn't absolutely necessary to eat meat?

Of course it is necessary, we need meat in our diets or we get sick.

Breakfast cereal was popularized by american adventists who held certain ideas about vegetarianism, I think both Post and Kellogg companies were Adventist
I don't think there is another Christian group associated with vegetarianism

If I'm not mistaken, lots of monks are vegetarian. I suppose if you think of it as a lifelong fast, then it does have some spiritual merit. Ignoring the pleasures of the world gives you a greater focus on the divine.
