I'm collecting pictures of ugly catholic churches to provide a counterpoint to the stereotype that this is purely a Protestant problem

I never knew there was such a stereotype. Most modern arquitecture churches are terrible.
As Christendom falls into spiritual decay it looses focus on things like objective beauty, the buildings reflect that.
The arquitects are not the only ones to blame as their clients greenlight these jokes.

It's not a protestant or catholic problem, it's a cultural problem, ever since Vatican II the church has been more open to inculturation which is valid because the early church took Jewish and graeco-roman inspiration for their architecture, vestments and so on but as the surrounding culture suffers so does the material culture of the church.

The situation in which the church has found itself in these days is really sad to watch. It tries to somehow modernize what is incompatible with the modern world and the results are this. A frankenstein monster of medievalism and postmodernism that ironically probably repells more people than if it had stayed as it was 500 years ago.
Note that I'm not talking only about the architecture and aesthetics here.

Not too many years ago, my parish had an ugly, modern church built. Unsurprisingly, it proved to be a money sink and they had little choice but to sell it to a Baptist pastor. A pet project of the liberal Catholic leadership that failed miserably.
As it turns out, your average Catholic would sooner give their time and money to maintain an old church than even show up at one of these unsightly modern churches. This is in New England, so I'm not surprised these modern designs are flourishing in the (traditionally low church Protestant) South.

>Vatican 2 was protestantism
What was the genesis of this meme talking point? Has anyone relevant ever made this comment?

It's a confusion of correlation with caustation, that people used it as a Trojan horse just mean the church was already rotting and the faithful lukewarm under the facade of tridentine catholicism
