OP, first part of your post also makes greater sense when considering the following prophecies:
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. - Daniel 12:4
But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. And the gospel must first be published among all nations. - Mark 13:9-10
We see these things gradually increasing, as I am sure people generally have since the prophecies were made. That has been the general trend. The problem of course is that as men become more in control of their environment, it only leads to enabling more sin. You remember how they built the tower of Babel and God set them back. Everything God does is for good, meaning to allow it to continue would have been evil and destructive. Now we see the same pattern emerging once again. Men need Christ. They need his word and the Holy Spirit to give them the means to hear. The sad reality is that Jesus Christ told us that the way is broad that leads to destruction, and that many there be which go that way. Meaning the number of the saved will be relatively few, if we believe the saying of the Lord. He is telling us this for our own good, everything that the Lord God does is ultimately for our benefit, even if the truth is hard to hear. James tells us how great God is in his epistle. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
>So, basically Christ isn't going to return any time soon,
Not true, he told us to watch for the signs of his coming. Also that no man knows the day or hour of his return, and it is hard to tell how close it is. All you can do is see the day of the Lord getting closer. Consider what Paul and Peter wrote:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. - Hebrews 10:25
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? - 2 Peter 3:10-12
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. - Titus 2:11-14
>where is the power to move mountains? why can't we drive the filth from our lands? where is our vindicator?
He told us to wait and keep alive that which is ready to die.
Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
- Revelation 2:2-3
Mark 13:
Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
