By Biblical definition, Adam is the first man because the same word is used for both man and Adam. One of the other main words used for man is that for the name of the grandson of Adam, Enos, also an ancestor of Noah by the Biblical account.
So we can say by definition that men necessarily have Adam as an ancestor. This naturally means that anything created before that could not be man. At least not by the Biblical definition.
>Were they created on the 6th or the 7th day?
All indications suggest it was the 6th day. Genesis 2 starts telling the generations of the heavens and the earth starting in verse 4. Meaning it is now going back and telling more specific information about the general order of events from chapter 1. Anything that is necessary for us to know is included with extraneous information omitted. We wouldn't want to have facts not significant for our salvation bogging down the narrative.
>Where is the Garden of Eden?
There are multiple theories, but likely the world had different ocean levels before the deluge making many different possibilities feasible.
>Must the story of the serpent and the apple be taken literally?
There is no requirement to suppose that the serpent could not talk in its form before it was changed by God to its current form so no. But the Bible only says fruit not specifically apple, but it could be.
