There's the greed hypothesis, that the church took on modern values to get more followers and more money.
There's also the successful infiltration hypothesis: the Freemasons infiltrated and were successful and don't care if people know who they are anymore.

As much as I don't like Freemasons, I have a hard time believing the Freemasons made that much of an impact in Italy.. let alone the Vatican. They already have their patriarchal/brotherhood groups: La Cosa Nostra and others. And they had already been corrupting the country and at least parts of the Catholic church for centuries. Just in a different way. Anyone encroaching on their piece of the pie would have gotten their balls cut off and a bullet in their head. Freemasons are more of a WASPY or at least further West Europe thing. Even then, the French and Belgians and whatnot have their own thing too (Rosicrucians, etc).

When it was reported that Cardinal Bergoglio made the heretical claim that while on earth Jesus was just a man and not true man and true God, that you shouldn't believe the reporter. A heresy like that would me he couldn't be made Pope.
It's a kind of deception that Catholics are allowed; as it isn't an outright lie.
Heretics can return to the Church, but no power on earth can make a former heretic a Pope, and no power in heaven would do so. Did Pope Francis really say this? Did he like the South American porn star's picture? I have no idea but this thing happens too often.
