What I find bizarre is that behind Ashkenazi Jews, Episcopalians are probably the most dominant religious group in the American elite. They're wealthier, more educated, and more well connected than any other Christian denomination. Pew Research from 2014 has stated they're the third wealthiest religious group in America. They're disproportionately over-represented in American Business, Politics, and Law. They've made up a quarter of all United States Presidents. Many elite American families such as the Morgans and Vanderbilts have been Episcopalian.

Why is this?

Liberals are just more intelligent. Seriously, conservatives are stuck with medieval morality, while liberals have science.

Old money and ethnic homogeneity

Episcopal are generally non evangelical and have not made significant inroads to poors and nonwhites in american history. This is a per capita thing. They're not more powerful in terms of number or aggregate wealth.

Episcopals have only been left leaning in the past 30-40 years.

As for the OP's question, it's just that many old (WASP) families were part of it. It's a whole network of connections that goes back far.

Methodists aren't Evangelicals either really, but they historically focused on the poor, starting with Wesley himself in England. Then moreso in America.

As an aside, some say without Wesley, England would have fallen to Revolution like France. But he came at a time that addressed working classes, built/encouraged more services for them. So by the time revolutionary talk started in Europe, it mostly fell on deaf ears in England.

I forgot to point out the elephant in the room:

A lot of them are Freemasons. That unlocks a whole network in itself.

I was under the impression Episcopalians were Catholic-esque with their rituals

Presbyterians are high up there also (e.g.Trump). Mainliners are traditionally seen as more moderate than more divergent sects therefore likely to be more grounded and rational and thereby more productive rather than fanatical and disruptive.

That's if you're willing to treat every last vestige of Roman Christian tradition as a superstitious ritual.
