Christanons, I'm a catholic (not a very good one yet :/), but why should I pray for saints when I can pray to God? I really wanna understand it and I'm not a troll, so (please) don't delete my thread.

Mostly moral support. You ask Saints to pray for you because they specialized in a certain thing or have a specific grace related to it from conquering it in death.

You can and should just ask Jesus but it is nice to know you have someone up in heaven bothering Jesus for your intentions.

This is also why you are encouraged to develop a devotion to Saints because they will pray for you and ask God to grant your graces without you needing to ask.

Also ask St Joseph for stuff he sort of gets over shadowed by Mary and he deserves some love as well. Poor guy had to spend time in hell waiting for Jesus; John the Baptist as well.

No worries anon.

Firstly, prayer to the saints has its roots in scripture, just look at 2 Maccabees 15

Secondly, prayer asking for intercession on the part of the saints is simply another way of approaching God via the appeals of those who lived virtuous, yet troubled lives like any of us.

Thirdly, just limiting yourself to praying to God alone is just that, limiting, there is no reason not to explore the vast field of prayer which you may partake in, humbly praising the Lord or asking for his assistance, whatever form it takes.

You could do both OP.

You have to remember to pray literally means to ask. When you pray to a saint you're literally just asking them to pray for you you just asking them to advocate for you in Heaven. Just like when you use the prayer thread here on this board you're asking us to pray for you. You are literally asking us here The Advocate on your behalf you're literally praying to us.

Remember not only did Jesus tell us that we should be praying for each other you also have to remember that the Saints in heaven are not dead as Protestants like to claim they are. For our God is not the god of the dead but the god of the living and eternal life. The Saints and martyrs in heaven live with in the mystical body of Jesus Christ. If you could contact a Jesus up in heaven with your prayers you can contact a saint up in heaven with your prayers. Yes it is not one-hundred-percent necessary to ask anyone to pray for you but it would still help you in the long run.

> I am a Catholic but not a very good one

Well my friend today is a great day to start praying the rosary everyday.

Also if you're a male which you most likely are you should consider joining the Knights of Columbus. It's a really good Catholic fraternity. Just as iron sharpens iron we lift each other up and help each other sharpen our faith.

The Knights of Columbus are all over the place. From Canada, to Iraq, to the Philippines you should be able to find a council or a Knightley Brotherhood associated to the knights (via the International Alliance of Catholic Knights)

If you live in the West, you are most likely near a council.

>Doesn't run in Ireland, too many modernists

Tbh with you, anon. This is actually a great reason why someone like you an anti-modernist must join the Knights. So you can lead your brothers and your community away from the evils of modernism and into the loving arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Heck, my Grand Knight (the council leader) even said that he is looking to retire soon. Which is good for him but also bad because no one else wants to volunteer for the position. I told him, I'll do it and it made his day alot better. We need more young blood to replace the old of the boomer generation. Someone has to be a good example for these millennials and zoomers after all.
