Is it sinful to read the Scriptures of other religions? I obviously don't plan on believing them though

You can read whatever you want unless it's pornography, which you should avoid. If your faith is strong, there is no harm in reading the texts of other religions.

Something not being inspired scripture does not mean it shouldn't be read. Obviously there are different degrees of orthodoxy - among non-inspired texts, it is more profitable to read St Irenaus of Lyons' "Against Heresies" than to read the Qu'ran. But the Church didn't outright shy away from reading and even studying non-inspired and even heterodox texts. Jubilees, Enoch, 4 Ezra, 2 Baruch, the Proto-gospel of James, etc. are all texts that the Fathers loved, without recognizing them as inspired or even fully compatible with the faith.

There is certainly something good to be found in Buddhist, Islamic, etc. scriptures. Just be sure that you have a solid understanding of Christianity before you get into this though, or else you may very well fall into heterodoxy or even syncreticism. If you find something good in these texts, first check what a Christian perspective on this same topic is, and "digest" those texts with the waters of baptism so that their implications can be used in a Christian manner.

I don't think so. It's probably a waste of time though

No it isn't a sin. If anything it is a good thing to do if you want to go into apologetics and wish to proselytize the people of whatever you will be reading (the quran, eddas, satanic bible, etc). Just make sure to pray to God before hand and ask for protection from the influence of said books.

Not sure why Sun Tzu is being mentioned. He's just a military general afaik.

Chinese-wise, I think Taoism offers a lot. While the overall theology is much different, the advice to live in the present is similar to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in places.

Interestingly, the main Chinese (Chinese Union) bible translation has "In the beginning was the Tao and the Tao was with God and the Tao was God" for it's translation of the Gospel of John. And to me, that's brilliant. It isn't often that a culture can capture the Jewish "Memra" and/or Greek "Logos" with an equivalent translation that speaks more directly to them. There have been some translations since the Chinese Union Version that have tried to Westernize it further and just put "Word" like we do in English, but I think this is silly. They actually have a more appropriate word for Logos, and it's just Western bias to not use it.

It can be interesting but you need to be sure about your faith before you do. I wouldn't encourage anyone to start reading other religious texts who I thought was still uncertain about their faith or could be potentially swayed to apostatize

I've read the Bhagavad Gita and Tao Te Ching. They're both excellent and have much to teach us about philosophy and life.

No, you can read them as literature, besides all truth in them ultimately comes from God, you wouldn't reject 1+1=2 because a pagan said so neither did the bible touch on every perspective and topic.

>Just make sure to pray to God before hand and ask for protection from the influence of said books.

I got a Quran after reading the Bible, hoping it'd be as illuminating as the Bible was for me. If anything, I should have prayed God to give me strength to read through that pile of crap. The more I interact with other religion's beliefs, including esoteric texts (The Kybalion is neat), the more convinced I am Christianity is the true one.

It's best to know your scripture very well before you waste time with learning the false religions.

Knowing your enemy is good, but how many times did you read the bible cover to cover? How many commentaries and saints have you read?

Pagan books are written with the specific intent to indoctrinate the reader into believing in false doctrines. I don't see the problem in reading a cookbook written by a Hindu, but one should be really cautious when reading Hindu mystical stuff, for instance. Also, this >>808409

Everything good is from the Lord. (But you, need the Lord to discern if it is good!).

I can personally vouch that this book was extremely spiritually productive and motivating for me. ”Practice of Brahmacharya” by Sri Swami Sivananda. It is about the battle with lust. It is direct and forthright, and clearly written by a practitioner. I have found nothing remotely close to this from the west. Read with discernment. The whole thing is available for free online here:

I sincerely apologize if this post is deemed unhelpful or harmful. I promise it is not my intention. Lust is an issue many of us face, myself especially. My thought is that we to use any tools available to overcome that demon. It was for me helpful and I highly recommend it to anyone facing the same issue.

>"In the beginning was the Tao and the Tao was with God and the Tao was God"

man that explains why we get so many winnie the poohed up cults out of China and Korea. Not that it isn't an apt comparison, but it does lead people like the moonies to think God has some Yin-Yang aspect.
