Why does everyone hate church rock bands? I’ve never heard a reason articulated beyond “modernism.”

To be honest, I’ve always hated them without having experienced them; I just didn’t really think about the reason why. Recently I’ve been going to a new church cause of college, and they have a worship band. They were playing vid related the church isn’t hillsong or hillsong connected, this is just the best performance I could find online, and honestly I really loved it. I felt a very spiritual and emotional movement that is rare for me. I’ve been relistening to this song since then. I realized I could never articulate why I disliked worship bands beyond a general anti-modernism feeling. What do you guys think?

For me it's that generally they are reskinned secular love songs. Hillsong is better in this regard.

I think it's largely this. Musically they often sound so very generic, with the same 'epic' sound that normies are able to lap up while being found offensive in its mediocrity by anyone vaguely outside normiedom. This is just my understanding/assumption, I personally find it kinda this way, although I prefer that the lyrics are about God rather than another love interest and I like a few interesting/well produced and written songs of this type. But there's only so much of the saccherine sweet sound one can have before it gets a little sickly, personally and, like I said, lots of them sounds generic, the same boring etc. etc.

"Jesus is my boyfriend" culture

Like our church, we have a church rock band, concert lighting, fog machine….why does a church need this?

They claim they want to reach the youth while saying to hell with the old timers that like worship music, hymns and a choir.

I feel they are trying to turn our churches away from real worship.

Every Sunday I feel like I have been to a christian rock concert.

Most objectively suck.

This too, its the emotionalism of the music and rock concert performance aspect that people feel is taking away from proper, serious and reverent time with God, like old services and worship styles used to provide - people worry and charge that all the lights smoke and sound systems distract from that aspect and that if all the guitars and drum and bells and whistles and "jesus is my boyfriend' lyircs and emotional love song tones were to be removed from a worship service that people would stop going to church and this emotional high it provides is the only reason they're going in the first place. Like I said, I like a few of these types of songs from time to time, but I don't think they're appropriate for proper worship in a church, and instead should be confined to actual concerts/non sunday performances, where people who like that stuff can get their fix and worship God there in their own way if that suits them.

To quote Hank Hill: “you’re not making Christianity cooler, you’re making rock and roll worse.”

Basically to sum up what everyone else said, it’s sugary, mediocre and doesn’t really teach any doctrine in a memorable way, just singing outdated facsimiles of already crappy pop music with “Lord” or “Jesus” inserted in the appropriate places.

It's gay.

If you have an anthropocentric creation, why do you have instruments?

Because if I wanted to listen to the most vapid, boring, secular tunes, I wouldn't be a Christian.

If Christian bands want me to appreciate them, then they should make music like Mars Volta or Rainbow. And even then, I'd be disgusted if they played it in the church. Let secular stay secular and let holy be out of this world.

ya, and it's arguably a blasphemous mix of the Holy (name of the Lord) and the profane (anything that is not of Christ)

"Jesus is my boyfriend" songs is such a meme

There's actually a massive range in "contemporary" Christian songs, singing about the full dimensions of Christ, many very heavy on his supremacy and uniqueness.

One of the most popular songs of recent times:

Death could not hold You, the veil tore before You

You silenced the boast, of sin and grave

The heavens are roaring, the praise of Your glory

For You are raised to life again

You have no rival, You have no equal

Now and forever, Our God reigns

Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the glory

Yours is the Name, above all names

One in vogue ATM

Jesus Jesus

You make the darkness tremble

Jesus Jesus

You silence fear

A lot of modern worship is actually very well done and derived straight from scripture. My problem with it is that everyone performing it has perfect teeth and hair and is young and wears perfect clothes and is very cool which doesn't give the best impression of what the Christian life entails. But that comes from a drive no different to that which clothed priests in shiny, ornate garments. Just a late modern American expression.

Experience is an essential part of faith.

OP your rare experience can become deeper, clearer and more regular as you seek God daily in prayer, simply say "hineni" and let him lead you

Having an emotional experience is not the same as having a spiritual experience. Following rock band jesus is not the same as following Christ.

it ruins both christianity and rock music. Just because I like two things doesn't mean they should mix, eg I like smokes and I like animals, doesn't mean I'd like smoking animals.

>Why does everyone hate church rock bands? I’ve never heard a reason articulated beyond “modernism.”

Not everyone does.

But a lot of us find rock music in church worship services – that whole "loog at moi" performance thing of worship teams, plus the repetitious feels-manufacturing choruses – deeply disturbing in the force faith.

I *think* pic-related mostly captures it. There's a lot of good statements in there, but I think the guy around 5 minutes summarises the issue best (though not completely).

>proper, serious and reverent time with God, like old services and worship styles used to provide

There's also a much more practical aspect to it as well, the more complex your music is the harder it is for everyone to sing along to. After a certain point, the choir sings to the congregation instead of the congregation and choir singing together as it should be. I'll use an example that doesn't involve rock bands at all

Compare this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vexqIzvkMT4

to this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOkkKTLxNwc

You can easily hear the difference, the first is a whole congregation singing which blends out the bad voices and doesn't emphasize only a few while the organ accentuates the singing and gives a basic rhythm, and in the other the choir and main singer are heard over everyone else and the instruments drown out most of the congregation singing. The older song is also played at a noticeably slower pace so you don't need to "perform" the song you simply sing along. More traditional music isn't just preferred for being more reverent, but also because it just works better as congregational music.
