Why is Christian tradition so silent regarding John the Baptist? From the New Testament, all we know is that he (supposedly) was a Jewish ascetic and preacher who was born miraculously, who taught that the Messiah was soon to come, who practiced baptism and baptized Jesus, and who was executed under Herod.

Any other information comes either from Islamic or Mandaean sources, both of which are of dubious authenticity. There is also some stuff from Josephus, but it's basically the same as what is in the New Testament.

What sort of information are you looking for? It seems like the NT is pretty detailed regarding John and he is considered a Saint by the Church. Are you thinking like more details regarding his role? He was pretty straightforward in his intentions: repentance and baptism by water to prepare for Christ and descent of the Holy Ghost.

What are you expecting there to be newspaper articles and tax returns?

Ancient times illiteracy was around 90% and written documents were expensive to create and preserve. Of the tiny amount of documents produced we have less than 1% preserved.
