Oh well I could have find a better picture but it was one of the only ones without girls sitting on their knees with little clothing.

So here's my story:

I started praying the rosary for the first time last monday, it was after a long period (2 month) when I was spiritually dead again (It hasn't happened since I became christian)

As "punishment" and asking for repentance I prayed the rosary only sitting on my knees against the tiled flooring, it took a whole hours with period of pain, the blood wasn't able to circulate easily in my legs and feet. (I reassure you, I am no masochist, it wasn't pleasant at all) However I could feel really concentrated and, when I was done, was happy that I could carry on until the end (though it was with difficulty)

So my questions are : Is praying in such manners good when we ask forgiveness for a great sin/mortal sin? Is self inflicted physical pain tolerated by God if it's for praying/punishment purpose ? (I became christian 6 month ago, and I only finished the NT and I'm currently near the beginning of the OT so I'm not fully aware yet)

No the 5 mysteries of that day so 5 decades, but I was slow because I was carefully checking if I wasn't making any mistakes for my first time

on top of that I meditated one mystery before saying the decade, while praying for specific thing so I guess it takes more time that way

Sounds dangerously close to flagellation.

What is wonrg with the regular prayer position? It already hurts as is and if you want penance you can try fasting or other mortification acts. I mean self inflicted pain is ok, as self flagellation was practiced until quite recently, but maybe lack of circulation can bring you long term and undesired consequences.

1 hour on your knees (regular position) is quite hard to withstand due to pressure on your knees obviously and also from muscle pain to hold that position, but really if you are going to spend an hour pray the whole rosary. Also what works for me is I meditate on the mysteries while saying the Hail Marys.

It's not so bad. It's called mortifying the flesh. Many saints did that, including JPII, Saint Francis of Assisi and more. However just like fasting the purpose is to rein in your own desires, not to go full flagellation and maim yourself. That's just masochism.

Penance, mortification and redemptive suffering are all widely recognised to be good and useful methods.

That said, don't do anything extreme before consulting it with your spiritual director or confessor.

Also, approach all unusual and hard ways of penance with caution - they can be useful, but can easily lead to pride and vanity too.
