During the last World War several decades ago, the our lands were once part of the mighty Empire. Bordered on all sides by other great powers, this was feared to be the most likely place for a foreign invasion, none the least the potential of a seaborne invasion as well.
And so this being the area of greatest danger, the Empire decided to turn it into the area of greatest strength. Over 2 Billion Purplemarks (equivalent to 5 billion Purplemarks today) were spent to create the nations most famous cultural and historical landmark: The Guns of Mt Düm. Look to any modern schoolbook in any school in the united states of our glorious nation, and you will see her mighty bastion as the symbol of our great state.
Fortress Düm was built around a series of supermassive artillery pieces, ranging from 80cm to 100cm. Originally built for battleships until it was deemed that it was physically impossible to build the planned battleship that these guns would be turreted in, the Empire opted to embed these guns in a brand new mountain super fortress. Millions of tons of earth were carved out of the mountain, and replaced by millions of ton concrete and steel were poured in. The mighty guns were heavily protected, such that when firing only the last one foot of her 50 meter barrel would be exposed and if need be the gigantic doors of the turret can completely seal them in, protected by 10 meters of steel casing beneath many more of mountain rock and snow.
The guns are fed by a complex multistory autoloading mechanism, that ferries eight ton shells from half a mile beneath the mountain in segmented and secured ammo storage dumps, up a vast conveyor belt system where they are loaded into the guns.
An underground rail system connects the fortress to various industrial and ammo producing facilities in the nation, keeping it supplied with the huge shells, spare parts, and food.
Such was the percieved effectiveness of the guns that the allies swore never to invade in this part of the Empire. As such, in ended up that the guns never actually fired in anger, for the Empire surrendered at the capital without the allies coming to this region.
Following the portioning of the Empire, ownership of the guns was given to our glorious state of Bluenia and Rednegovania. It proved actually economically infeasible to remove the guns or the facility, so it was decided to keep them repaired and fit for function instead. Now upgraded with modern radar, electronics, and all the assortment of modern warfare, this Great War Relic used mostly as national propaganda and tourism must for the very first time be brought into action.
