Have you missed the whole point of the show? Most of the towns being nice and safe, everyone cracking jokes and living in a comfy illusion is what gets people killed out in the field. That's the theme of the story - even the smallest evil can wreak havoc and destroy lives if left unchecked, and eliminating most devious threats earn you little praise or glory. Reality gives exactly zero fucks about what you feel like in a warm inn with belly full of beer, one slip and you get gobbed.

Nobody's fucking grimdark in warzones all the time either when they get to base, despite being in danger even there. The fact that GS can't unwind at all and is in goblin slaying mode all the time is supposed to indicate he is a PTSD ridden wreck, something that pretty much everyone acknowledges in onr way or another.

The no poison/explosion shit was because they were in a sewer underneath a metropolitan city. You don't bomb a sewer like that, you don't poison the waters even if that might be the most straightforward way of killing the gobs because the collateral is far greater than what the mission aims to prevent. Since GS is off the rocker, he needs to be repeatedly told this, that is the point.

These are simple things in a rather basic fantasy story, yet somehow people tend to miss any subtext that isn't blatantly spelled out, and if it is, they complain that the shoe considers them fools. What's up with that?

The further along we get, the more I think that this is an awful adaptation. The source material is great and the manga's imagery is great, which leads to the anime having hints of greatness. But the anime has so many pacing issues and animation issues that it can't even be said to be average. Let's take last episode for example:

It really is. Like someone else mentioned, what makes the series work is the emphasis on how weak the average humanoid is in this world. Even basic sewer rats and cockroaches pose real threats. The gore of the manga really adds to the feeling of how a single mistake can wipe the entire party. Censoring elf's soft rape scene, the champion's eye ball, priestess's bite, SM's scars only serves to lessen the weight of mistakes. As far as I can tell, the reason GS is silver is his sheer force of will to make no mistake and leave nothing to chance. But when you lessen those mistake it only detracts from tension of the story.

At least it got an anime I guess.

You see Goblin Slayer takes place in the Runescape universe and the war god Bandos created orcs, goblins, and trolls to fight in the godwars for him so they're all relatively closely related. I, for one, am glad the anime paces differently from the manga.

I was talking about his character as an adventurer and what made him worthwhile to promote. He himself couldn't 1v1 an orge or a gob champion in a straight fight like other silvers probably could. He pretty much kills both with environmental damage. The gob King and even Haruhi laugh at how weak he is. He says multiple times how unspecial and unhero like his is. His intense desire to not fuck up makes his extremely observant, creative in battles, and willing to prepare for anything. These traits make him worthy of being silver. His build is very valuable even if he's not strong. He'd be perfect in a party where he would quickly and efficiently wipe out the adds while the main dps builds deal with the boss, and he'd also be able to provide strategy not to mention create plenty of openings for the rest of his party. Do you really think if some scrub who only killed gobs because he sucked at everything would be promoted to silver? GS is a silver who chooses to only kill gobs because of his trauma. Japanese TTRPGS typically use six sided dice(d6) only, because for a long time it was difficult to get classic D&D die like d20s, etc, and normal game dice were already abundant and available in Japan. A good comparison can be made to Guts in Berserk (the setting of which is far darker than GS's), who for most of the manga is flippant and satisfied with himself throughout the harrowing events in the story, compared to the traumatized paralysis displayed by anyone who accompanies him. This is because Guts (until much later, even then still pretty substantially) is a colossal jackass, in contrast to GS's genuine heroism.

I have to join in regarding the sentiments about the problems with this adaptation. I can't help but feel they completely botched this confrontation among other things.

I could go on and on about all of these problems but I'll just do it for the first thing because it's so symptomatic of the strange and tone deaf choices that undermine what the scene is trying to convey for absolutely no conceivable gain. The fact that it's of the least of importance is exactly why I'll focus on it because I just can't wrap my head around why they did it this way. It's so nonsensical and so confusing and so easy to fix that it just leaves me puzzled as to why it's fucking there.

So in the manga they pin the doors to the vault, see the bait, priestess rushes forward to heal at which point they spot the ruse and the same moment the doors shut behind them and slayer realizes he fucked up because he got careless. In the anime slayer instead sees through the ruse instantly but instead of doing anything he just stands there for half a minute until the doors close. He doesn't even move as they audibly start closing. In fact there is no response or reaction from him whatsoever even after they have closed. Okay???

In the manga slayer realizes he made a bad mistake which sets the tone for what kind of situation they are supposed to be in and plays into the theme of how easily things will fall apart when you do. Watching the anime I'm not sure what they wanted me to feel. Apart from slayer coming across like an idiot for just standing around even when he has realized it's some kind of trap like didn't he lecture us on how gobs try to ambush from behind? he doesn't seem to care at all when they are trapped so do they want me to feel like there is no worry about? Like the exact opposite of what the manga does?

Why did they feel the need to change it in this way instead of just doing what worked in the manga? They've animated sections literally panel by panel so there is no doubt they are working off the manga here, at least when it comes to the visual side. Did they feel slayer not seeing through such an obvious ruse made him seem clueless so they made him seem even more clueless by not changing the rest of the scene to work with it? It's such a small detail to change, and you can change it, but when you don't tweak the rest of scene to match it just doesn't work anymore. Either have slayer get careless and only realize it's a trap when the doors close on them (manga) or have him spot the trap and instantly start looking around for the ambush, then dash for the doors but be too late (which would work but is a bad idea since it messes with the theme). One or the other. Can you not see why the setup from one and the conclusion from the other doesn't fucking work in the same scene? I just can't make sense of choices like these.

The rest of the issues are equally confusing.

Something about this whole confrontation just lacked tension and I realized there is never a clear shot establishing just what the size of the threat is. We see about ten gobs running and that it, while the manga made sure to show one quick panel of the horde packed shoulder to shoulder and extending out into the darkness outside the vault just so we know what we are up against. As a result the anime gives you get the feeling there is only the champion and a handful of regular gobs.

Another thing that ads to this is that they removed the gobs squeezing past the barrier and flanking priestess and elf, which again removes tension and the feeling that the situation is strained and things aren't going the way they should. That event also showed WHY we should be so worried if the barrier failed, something the we in the anime have to figure out after the fact.

A third thing is, as mentioned, that slayer employs no strategy against the champion. He just rushes straight at it which makes it seem slayer considers it no major threat, which tells the audience not to care, and also just makes him look like a reckless dumbass when he gets his ass handed to him. Here again the manga does the opposite which instead underscores just what a big threat this is and how dire the situation is.

That's it for the treat. The worst part for me though is they completely botched what sold me on the Goblin Slayer manga which is the way everything unravels and falls apart at this point. In the anime there is no unraveling: Once slayer is down everything just instantly falls apart before you really realize what is happening or any stakes have been set. In the manga it briefly shows them not having given up and trying to regroup and raise another barrier while they are are getting their backs pushed against the wall. They are getting swamped but are barely hanging on which apart from being tense in itself informs you of the consequences of another failure and sets you up with hopes for a heroic recovery, which then leaves you with a sense of disbelief when instead everything completely falls apart. Then you get the champion just taking a huge bite out of priestess' shoulder and driving it home. At this point in the manga I sincerely thought people were going to get killed off. It was so viciously unforgiving.

Basically the manga goes from mistake, fighting back, further setback, desperation and finally everything falling apart and then slayer coming back and the desperation serves to inform what's at stake in the falling apart. The anime cuts out the desperation part and jumps straight from setback to fall which removes the orientation and buildup of any emotion. Is this them really going down or are this just one of those ploys where they are swamped on the floor for a moment and then fight their way back up? By the time I know it's already after the fact and for example there are no more shots of elf until slayer is already back up and I know she is going to be saved anyway. I've tried pacing it out and it's a matter of about 20 seconds. 20 seconds more to set up and build the tension here is all they would have needed. More would be preferable but you could make it work.

Finally there's the general pacing problem where things can not get a few seconds more to build some tension or dread of anticipation while other things get drawn out twice as long as it should. They waste 13 seconds on priestess dropping the barrier but they can't take 5 to show us why that is such a big deal. It takes 20 seconds for the champion to start eating her when it should have taken less than 10. They rush through a whole chapter in three minutes, butchering it along the way, instead of jettisoning other crap and letting the main set piece take the time it needs. They should have put it in the previous episode and arrived at the vault five minutes earlier instead. Why can't we get a good establishing shot of the enemy strength but we do get five hundred flashbacks of where the hair came from?

One the good side I really liked that one shot in the bath where we saw bishop's legs and three drops fell into the water. It had a lovely layered composition and the mood was great and it's also one of the few things that took just the right amount of time to do something. But it should have been in the previous episode.

Good analysis, and fun thread. New adventurers are lured into becoming adventurers with incorrect perceptions. They see the Platinums with fame, wealth, charisma and armor, but don't see the work put in and failures/luck they have endured through. With little knowledge of grim truths, no tips or training from guildsmen, its easy to fall into an unfavorable position. Color badges help but segregate group-learned experience. There should be lower badge groups link up with higher to observe and support.

But you talked about towns having false safe atmospheres. We are best left alone, or kept at a distance from chaos so town life can proceed unhindered, uncorrupted. The local defense fails to alert young ones of how quickly and unkown danger hits. I'd like to see them travel and witness how other towns approach problems.

There were two separate, but related incidents going on in the town. Cultists murdering and making sacrifices, and goblins preparing for an invasion of the town underneath it, serving the master of the cultists. High ranking adventurers were already handling the cultists, and that's why they get stopped relatively simultaneously in the story. But, being high ranked adventurers, of course they didn't care about the goblins. When she initially sent adventurers to handle the goblins, they didn't come back, something she explicitly stated and Goblin Slayer's party found another party of adventurers down there long dead.

So she knew the problem was too big for low ranked adventurers to handle and she couldn't rely on normal quests. She used her influence in the city to stop the normal low level sewer quests(which Goblin Slayer finds odd) so low ranks wouldn't adventure in the sewers and be killed by strong goblins, and sent her familiar to keep them in line long enough for her to find a permanent solution, because she was too scared to go down there and handle it herself. Keeping anyone from going down there who might have discovered the extent of the problem and survived also helped conceal that personal failing.

Whether she heard about Goblin Slayer's spreading reputation at this point or she used blind cleric divine fiat to discover him, she specifically requested his help, because she knew no other high ranking adventurer would do it. She tried selling her sob story about how the goblins were affecting the city(which in reality was the cultists) hoping Goblin Slayer would sympathize and agree to take the quest. She doesn't know Goblin Slayer or understand that Goblin Slayer would've taken the quest anyways, doesn't care about the details, the emotions, or the personal problems involved, so she lied to him instead of telling him about the extent of the problem, putting the party's life in danger and getting him killed.

Because she felt personally responsible, she used the resurrection ritual on him, a rare magic that he says he never expected to be used on someone like him.
