You are an advanced people, you stumble across a group of primitive people and you have two options really. Take over, or study. You have mastered space travel so the resources gained are likely not important or worth the effort, so you observe. Just like we might look at monkey's or primitive tribes, maybe you take a few away for study, maybe do a few experiments. The people who see you will call you whatever they feel like, maybe you feel it out but you sure as hell don't give the hairless apes direct contact, and information to advance tech because you've seen how that works out. Poorly.
Alternatively, you reach out with those in power and they are complicit and fine with you doing what you want because they get your used junk thinking it's the greatest thing ever(the modern version of glass beads to indians) while you get to experiment, monitor the cool form of life you found.
Personally if an Alien species does decide to openly just show up, that means either they are very dumb or expect to get exterminated because you're the anthill in the pathway of a highway getting built.
