A major seafood company and nearly 10 individuals were indicted by the Justice Department this week over what the government said was a major seafood trafficking ring involving threatened eels.
The American Eel Depot Corporation of Totowa, New Jersey and “eight of its employees” were indicted on charges of “smuggling, Lacey Act violations and conspiracy to violate the Endangered Species Act,” the Justice Department said in a press release.
The charges against the individuals stemmed “from their trafficking in large volumes of highly imperiled eels,” the DOJ claimed.
The Justice Department called the New Jersey company “the largest importer and wholesale distributor of eel meat in the United States” and said that the corporation began sourcing eels illegally from Europe after similar efforts were cracked down on in the United States.
The defendants “conspired to unlawfully smuggle large quantities of live baby European eels out of Europe, to their eel-rearing factory in China,” the DOJ said. “After rearing the baby eels to maturity, defendants’ Chinese facility would then slaughter and process the eels for shipping to the United States, to be sold as sushi products.”
In the event of conviction, the department said, “each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 (for individual defendants) or $500,000 (for business organizations).”

The significance of the prayers needed some explaining to those unfamiliar with Catholic history.
The Pope on March 25 consecrated Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary with a prayer asking for peace in the world, Catholic News Agency reported.
At the end of a penitential service in St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis carried out the act, saying: “Mother of God and our Mother, to your Immaculate Heart we solemnly entrust and consecrate ourselves, the Church and all humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine.
“Accept this act that we carry out with confidence and love. Grant that war may end and peace spread throughout the world.”
Francis invited bishops, priests and ordinary faithful around the world to join him in the consecration prayer, which opened with the pontiff entering St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated 3,500 people, The Associated Press reported.
‘FREE US FROM WAR’
“Free us from war, protect our world from the menace of nuclear weapons,” the Pope prayed.
It ended with Francis sitting alone before a statue of the Madonna.
There, he solemnly asked forgiveness that humanity had “forgotten the lessons learned from the tragedies of the last century, the sacrifice of the millions who fell in two World Wars.”
In his homily, Francis said that the consecration “is no magic formula but a spiritual act.”
“It is an act of complete trust on the part of children who, amid the tribulation of this cruel and senseless war that threatens our world, turn to their Mother, reposing all their fears and pain in her heart and abandoning themselves to her,” he said.
Since Russia invaded its neighbor on Feb. 24 in what it calls a “special military operation”, the Pope has implicitly criticised Moscow, Reuters reported.
He has strongly condemning what he has called an “unjustified aggression” and denouncing “atrocities,” but he had not mentioned Russia by name.
He used the words Russia and Russians on March 25, although as part of a prayer and a homily.

I actually think that's normal, even for humans. When we remember someone we don't remember every single detail about them exactly, we only remember significant features they have. I can't remember my mother's face exactly as it is. I remember she has short brown/gold hair, dark skin, glasses, skinny face, and the rest of the normal features like eyes, nose, and mouth. US oil reserves massively depleting
Attempting to curve the prices of oil in the US, Washington has been actively using its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) for over a year. Bloomberg reported this news on Friday and highlighted that the government cannot continue to tap into the reserves in the long run.
Bloomberg’s report showed that the US has released about 115 million barrels throughout the past year. Since mid-May, approximately 1 million barrels have been released marking a new record-high.
Moreover, if the US continues to release oil from its reserves at the current rate, then it would have exceeded the production rate of most medium-sized OPEC countries similar to Algeria or Angola.
The SPR comprises two types of crude: medium-sour, and light-sweet crude. The prior is equivalent to the type of crude pumped by Russia, most West Asia countries, and Venezuela.
Significant reductions in the amount of crude inside the reserves result from the fact that, based on Bloomberg’s analysis of official data, 85% of the oil sold by SPR over the past 12 months has been medium-sour.
At the current pace of oil production, the reserves will shrink to a 40-year low with only 358 million barrels remaining by the end of October. Last year, the SPR location in Texas and Louisiana reportedly contained 621 million barrels. According to official information, the US is set to stop extractions from SPR in October.
The report stated that “As the oil market looks today, it’s difficult to see how Washington can halt sales in October. Removing that additional supply would mean commercial inventories quickly deplete, putting upward pressure on oil prices.”
OilX Research, a company that provides advanced oil data analytics and oil market intelligence, estimates by the end of October the SPR will hold only 179 million barrels of medium-sour crude. Meaning the US would have sold approximately 180-190 million barrels of oil from its SPR.
Lost hopes to curve oil and eventually gas price
The national average price for regular unleaded gas in the United States rose to $5.016 per gallon on June 14th, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), which tracks prices at more than 60,000 gas stations across the country.
Historically, the highest prices have been recorded in California, up to $6.44 per gallon, and the lowest in Georgia, at $4.49 per gallon.
In reaction to skyrocketing energy prices and the war in Ukraine, countries around the world are pouring money into new natural gas plants, which might undermine any hope of reducing global warming.
According to a recent study, governments such as the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Canada are investing in new gas production, delivery, and consumption in order to censure Russia.
The findings of the Climate Action Tracker research initiative show a rush for gas that will lock countries into the use of fossil fuels at a critical time when scientists have warned that a decisive shift to lower-carbon alternatives within the next few years is the only way to avoid climate breakdown.

The Washington Post fired political reporter Felicia Sonmez on Thursday after she spent the last week sharply criticizing her colleagues and the paper’s leadership, according to multiple reports.
Sonmez did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Her firing was reported by CNN, the Daily Beast and New York Times reporter Katie Robinson
Kris Coratti Kelly, The Washington Post’s chief communications officer, told The New York Post: “We do not discuss personnel matters.”
Sonmez, who has been at the paper for a decade, made headlines last Friday when she blasted fellow political reporter Dave Weigel for retweeting a sexist joke. Weigel subsequently apologized and was suspended without pay for a month.
On Tuesday, Washington Post Executive Editor Sally Buzbee warned reporters to maintain a “collegial” workplace and refrain from attacking colleagues on Twitter.
But Sonmez took to the social media platform again Thursday to blast Post reporters who sent out tweets praising the Jeff Bezos-owned paper as a “collegial” workplace and “downplaying the Post’s workplace issues.”
The Harvard-educated journalist noted that the reporters who “issued synchronized tweets … are all white” and are “among the highest-paid employees in the newsroom, making double and even triple what some other National desk reporters are making, particularly journalists of color.”
Many of her colleagues had been getting fed up with Sonmez’s social media onslaught, Vanity Fair reported on Wednesday
“Working at a huge news organization — the Post, the New York Times, CNN — is like living in a big city where there are always emergencies,” one staffer told the outlet.
“As a colleague, you probably should be trying to help fund the fire department or city services and make it a better place to live; at worst, you’re not paying your taxes,” another said.
“And then you have Felicia, who is essentially pouring gasoline on every fire and inviting people to watch.”
"The article detailed an incident where Sonmez sent a “reply all” email from Matea Gold, the Washington Post’s national editor, in which the reporter alleged she was “punished [in 2018] after I told an editor that I had to take a walk around the block after reading a difficult story.”
In what appears to be her final tweetstorm before being canned, she linked to the Vanity Fair article."
