Why did the port exist in the first place? We’ve had a standardized port for computer hardware literally for 50 years. The IEC 60320 C13 port. And for smaller scale hardware, the IEC 60320 C7 port. A custom port was never needed.

I miss it too but I think it was always going to be a phase to make way for VR. That's the next step right now but as you see, VR is a phase too.
I'd just add on that the gaming industry is on writer's block where it's just running out of innovative ideas and the only thing we can upgrade now is graphics graphics graphics. Even then, there are diminishing returns.
Don't believe me? Just look at Sony and Microsoft's new systems. It's like they're abandoning and forgetting the Move and Kinect.
You might laugh at all the weird ideas Nintendo have been coming up with, recently with AR Mario Kart, amiibos, Labo, Ring Fit, and imo a lot of them are misses, but those risks are what's keeping industry novel. Now if only they focused more on newer games instead of ports…
