But the 7th gen was shit. 5th gen was the last one that was really interesting, because the mass accessibility of 3D opened up a fuckload of new creative possibilities which simply weren't possible in 2D. But by the end of the 5th generation, the successful formulas had pretty much all been discovered and ever since then it's pretty much just been a race to polish, consolidate, and streamline.
There was a bit of bleedover into the 6th gen where you still got some real creative titles, but PSX and Saturn were pretty much the golden era of games - with the Dreamcast striding the generational gap being the swansong. It's all been downhill since.
The indie game scene could have been a renaissance, but the few real gems that get produced are completely fucking drowned in shovelware and hipster art projects. VR could have been another golden era, but headsets were too expensive so it never expanded much beyond adapting conventional games to the new space and $30 tech demos.

Upgrading next year, maybe. Win 10 has me worried so maybe its finally time for Linux. Not happy either way, I'm a simple man who likes things to just work like they did 99% of the time on Win 7. Though it will be a couple of years before the new consoles are made full advantage of.
Anyway, its no surprise. Graphics are bottoming out it feels like and they can add all the bells and whistles on top but we're getting diminishing returns. I'd honestly prefer that if it actually meant devs started focusing on AI, better levels and worlds, more features and mechanics, physics etc. Stuff that ultimately actually matters. Problem is ever since Crysis, GRAFFIX have been the first thing people see and talk about. Hell, the Series X from the beginning has been marketed as the most powerful console ever, capable of 4K MEGAPIXEL RAY TRACING GRAFFIX.

If you switch to something like mint or PopOS things usually will just work 99% of the time. Really at this point there's only issues with like, specifically Adobe software because they deliberately break wine, and overly intrusive anticheat bullshit.
You could even get something like lutris which has python scripts to do essentially all the setup for you.

Well part of the issue is nothing (in games) uses multithreading and the few that do are extremely experimental and cripple performance when it becomes part of the equation.
Though if I were to be honest, I'm kind of glad single core performance is so stagnant. Keeps the used component market alive.

Either the smartest move they've made in a long time, or the dumbest. Early on in the generation they can claim they're focusing on cross-gen compatibility and the performance edge, while later in the generation they'll have more room to bump their games up from PS4's low graphics settings to a more low/medium mix of settings while targeting 30fps.
