Consoles are starting to cost as much as computers, nevermind the cost in videogames which is skyrocketing more and more as time goes on. 500-600 dollars for a plastic hunk of shit followed by 70-80 dollars per game. Or 500-600 dollars for a computer that you can freely upgrade along with discounted or free games.
Even in the 2000s PC has never been a niche market. Maybe in the early to mid 90s when it was less common and less widely used. Digital downloading and streaming only made it more accessible. Consoles are doing the same shit now. Disc is completely useless. Download 20 gigs from the disc followed by a hundred gig download from the server. Consoles are starting to become desktops now, especially evident in the next generation.

This is only true at the start of a gen, but after a year or two PCs become cheaper. You can buy a shitty refurbished PC, slap a new graphics card in it and you'd have something that costs a little less than a console but has more horsepower. I think even some regular non-gaming personal computers have better specs than some consoles. However, bitcoin mining and the cryptomeme has driven the prices of GPUs up. When you factor in steam sales/gog for the buyfags, which I assume 99% of people on consoles are, it gets even cheaper.
The only thing really keeping consoles alive is marketing and business deals. Most games are made on cross-platform engines that can run on PCs, but console manufacturers like Sony will sign a deal to make the game exclusive on their platform. Not to mention retards who still buy into the console war shit as if modern consoles aren't glorified PCs. There's really a lot of manufactured ignorance around PCs that keeps the normalist of normalfags out, which isn't necessarily a good thing because AA and AAA game studios naturally target whichever platform is the largest. I think consoles have more buyfags than PCs do, and most people on PC either pirate or wait for a steam sale.

Microsoft is intending to move to ARM eventually. Their strategies at the moment are telling us they want Win32/x86 support to be dropped. Like it or not they are going to force us off x86 in time. Intel and AMD are pushing ARMs eventually their ARM products will over take their x86 products. The trend is there we'll see if they manage to pull off ARM that has decent backwards compatibility. Microsoft have tried at least 3 times to get ARM
builds of Windows going.
1) There was the Microsoft Surface non-Pro tablet that was ARM that no one bought and no one developed for
2) There is the Windows 10 S edition that includes Windows Store support only and you couldn't install your own apps on.
3) Microsoft trying again with the successor to 10 S in point 2, because fuck it, we know better than our customers despite approaching Google-levels of abandoned projects.
They'll get the hint eventually when people ignore it just as hard as the Xbox games store on PC, Zune or the Windows Phone.
In the meantime, Steam is going from success to success despite everything. Linux game compatibility is at an all-time high and only increasing. Mac-fags are BTFO because Mac is dropping support for Vulkan and OpenGL and will use their proprietary Metal engine because who-the-fuck-knows, Apple has too much money and hates its customer base.
Despite the subpar quality of games, it looks like a new golden age of PC gaming is nigh. Just play the games you love.

fully aware. But consider that those ARM cpus will be what most of these new streaming services are based on you can see why they would want mass adoption, the data centres too are pushing ARM. The games industry is moving away from powerful systems the current console gen is a last ditch effort to try and make it work but I suspect its going to fail miserably due to cost. Beyond that streaming boxes will become the norm going forward once they realise most consumers aren't gonna want to spend that much on hardware.
I mean this is all hypothetical but I see the new console generation performing exactly as the last one did. A total waste of money and dead in 3-4 years due to no games. Unless you're playing purely AAA games you don't need such extravagant hardware. And the AAA model will in time fail as well. The games industry has to adapt to the new norm. I fully expect this new generation to blow up in their faces the PC will remain relevant due to ARM. In the end cost is going to be the deciding factor as to what triumphs.

PC will always be most open to indie devs. Even if it doesn't have many AAA exclusive games, the library is huge forever. The only thing holding it back is specs of individual parts, but that's something the consumer can control.
Really the only reason to buy a console is one, for the exclusives, and two, you want to play modern games for a lower price than the typical GTX 2070 gaming PC. There's also resellability of physical games. Gaming spec requirements are increasing per each generation and the way its been kept up with right now is from a console.

While PC exclusives aren't all that special in the hardware department most of the time, PC is still the best platform. You could build PC for the same price as a PS5/Series X and have access to many more games than both combined. You may not be able to go higher than 1080p 60FPS but the massive library added to by emulation helps alleviate that.
If anything consoles should be dead soon. They are closed off prebuilts now more than ever and Xbox seems content with ultimately merging PC and Xbox into one giant platform through Gamepass and games going to both. Sony has started porting their exclusives over. Consoles have less of a reason to exist this generation and the next will probably be worse. It won't stop people from buying them though.
