Games have gotten easier over the years, that's no question. What are some games that can still exhume a good amount of difficulty? Preferably with a casual filter so I don't have to see it suffer the damned "Dark Souls of X" comparison.

Games were difficult because they were designed to bleed stupid kids of their quarters. A lot of these difficult games were ported to home consoles and didn't change much if anything. Just imagine if Ninja Gaiden had checkpoints, you'd finish it in an afternoon and then deal with $60 down the toilet for a three hour game. But make a game ball breaking hard, so that it lasts for a dozen hours, the $60 isn't that big of a deal.

I don't see why that even matters. It just so happens that a game is more fun when it actually challenges you, so it works out in everyone's favour. They didn't "trick" me into having fun.

You act like it's a bad thing, besides hard difficulty back then was specific for retarded kids to send their hard earn money, basically this guy>>16944146 says it all. Since arcades died out in the early to mid 90s games started to become easier with the rise of consoles and computers being the way everyone plays games nowadays. As an adult i suck at games now so to have an easy mode is essential for older guys like me or just people that suck at games

And now games are easy because they're designed to bleed stupid and easily-frustrated kids with microtransactions.

>Just imagine if Ninja Gaiden had checkpoints,

it does. not a great example of a "port that didn't change much if anything", either.

>Cuphead is the new Contra

It's a nice game. Casual zoomer filth can't stand having to play competently for more than 2-3 minutes straight, so the level select/boss rush structure works better for them. Games meant to be played from beginning to end in a single sitting (but only if you git gud) are fairly rare now. Streets of Rage 4, for instance, has an 'arcade mode' but it's a little on the long side for that (~2 hours I think). Perhaps some roguelites apply, but they tend to include some kind of metaprogression across runs so they're for gay babies.

>Preferably with a casual filter so I don't have to see it suffer the damned "Dark Souls of X" comparison

Mr. Driller is the Dark Souls of drilling games, the "new" game is a remake of a 20 year old one though so I guess that's why it's not garbage.

Those are all easy games what are you on about? Ninja Gaiden is just you perfect a short run and thats only near the end from what I remember. Crash is easy and never hard all of these games are the past equivalent of a modern casual game. Just seem harder due to continues and lives. Dark Souls has a literal I frame button.

games have gotten easier because average customer doesn't have time to learn skills required to progress if the skill cap is too high.

If someone works full time and has his own household with family then the "fun" he wants to take from playing videogames is not learning the game's difficult systems and mechanics because said person exerts their energy for more important matters in their life.

That is the reason why "average" game is easier than it was back then - market expanded and average customer has a life outside of videogames. The hard shit still exists and there are plenty of games that force you to learn and if you take time and focus to get better you will.

Nigger look at all your supposed hard games from that era and tell me they're not on par with games that arent third person shooters, fps, or classic turn based strategy. If you thought Castlevania, Megaman, Crash or hell even Ninja Gaiden were hard you were either a dumb shit kid who'd probably struggle with modern games. Not like shit in the same vein if those games arent being made either what is Bloodstained, Mighty no 9, Salt and Sanctuary, Blasphemous, Cuphead etc they're all the same. The true redpill is learning we never left 2008 and are stuck in the same loop of games just without resets some games are trying to be more lucrative by having it impact story like how Demon's Souls did well at least Sekiro tried to. Turn based has evolved too the fact that your new classic turn based games are Persona which as simple as they are still have more in depth mechanics thanks to Megaten than FF ever had unless the earlier ones were a drastic change from FFX's combat system. All in all fuck off nostalgia niggers this is the reason why we're getting boring rehashes like Crash 4 and Ratchet rather anything fresh or new with mechanics I've never seen before I really just want something new for fucking once

It's less about the difficulty going down and more that the most common genres shifted. Most devs are just making boring ass mobile games and shitty playable movies instead of platformers and beat em ups.

Furi was pretty hard on my first playthrough, especially that parry-only boss near the end and le good ending boss. I still haven't beaten the second extra boss in practice mode. Great OST too, I listen to it all the time.

Games were difficult because difficulty requires the player to think things through and create strategies to beat it.

There's also the problem that without the super graphics and audio quality of today, it would be really hard to hide the fact that the game just sucks, is completely unbalanced and can be beaten by a monkey on crack.

Now games are easy because they're created by corporate shitheads who think creating easy games is a superior sales strategy. It's also much easier to create an easy game than a hard one because you don't need to put much effort into fine tuning the game play.

The only games worth playing nowadays are roguelikes.

No, it was because they were designed to eat your quarters for microtransactions. I enjoy a lot of these old games like Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and more but they were made to fleece kids of their allowance. Home releases were just ports so kept the difficulty and maybe added a save system.

KH2FM on Critical was one of the hardest, most satisfying games I’ve ever played. Especially if you go the masochist lvl1 route.

>have to learn all the bosses and their wind up animations/proper spacing

>difficulty is properly balanced and they don’t just give enemies a ton of health while dishing out more damage

>tons of bosses/side bosses/secret bosses/general enemy variety

>can actually customize Sora’s movelist to properly fit your playstyle

It’s funny how little the original release actually made you play the game. Even on Proud difficulty you could pretty much just button mash till the end.

Your point of view is dumb and reductionist. Arcade is just a small foot note of gaming history, and if you ever emulated arcade games you know that they often had far more difficulty settings than console games. There's plenty of old games that are very hard and never had an arcade version, like the wizardry series, most early computer dungeon crawling games, adventure games, roguelikes, and many games that only existed on consoles.

Games were difficult because they were designed to be games. A game requires a lose and a win condition. And the win condition must be difficult to achieve. Otherwise, it's not a game, or it's a shit game. Nowadays game designers get away with mass producing shit games because they can distract the player with baubles like graphics and story.

honestly seems too simplistic to compare.

Contra had small sprites and big levels. Also had Contra Hard Corps with branching paths and I frame slides and multiple characters.

Cuphead is so basic.

to OP I would say Sekiro is the best mix of DarkSouls level satisfying difficulty but not nearly as frustrating or bullshit time consuming.

Aside from that the complexity of competitive smash bros is insane
