Did you install wine yet?

If so, what version?

At risk of being Haram, do you use steam? Do you have a selected version of proton to be used on games that are not whitelisted by Valve?

Have you checked WineDB and ProtonDB? (though, admittedly ProtonDB can be slightly less useful for troubleshooting)

Use “wine”. Its compatible with most windows software. “Crossover” is a paid variant of wine with better support and an easy gui.

Here's a list of every piece of advice I can think of. It's mostly for games I might think of more later.

Have a few different versions of Wine and Proton at your disposal, including forks.

You can use Proton without Steam, but I don't know enough about that to tell you the exact requirements.

Make sure to make a new wine prefix for every game, or at least only keep a small number of games that use the same technology in the same prefix.

To use a wine prefix, you must change the WINEPREFIX environment variable. To do this you must put "WINEPREFIX={insert directory of your desired wine prefix here}" before your desired command in a terminal. Also, you can't use ~ in the wine prefix directory. For example, if your username is anon, and your wine prefix is at ~/wineprefix and the program you want to run is at ~/games/videogame/game.exe then you'd enter "WINEPREFIX=/home/anon/wineprefix wine ~/games/videogame/game.exe" in the terminal.

Use winetricks to install only the components that you need to get the games to run.

Some of Microsoft's redistributable packages take a long-ass time to install, so what you can do is create template prefixes that just have some of the ones that take longer to install. Then, instead of going through the whole installation process for each game that uses said redistributable, you just copy your template whenever you want to install a game that needs it.

Japanese games can be a pain in the ass. You don't need to have a locale emulator, like you'd need on Windows. What you need to do is make sure you have anything for Japanese language support in your distro installed. You don't need to change your keyboard layout or display language, but you should be able to do it. Then, in the prefix that you wish to use, you must install some fonts. I don't actually know which ones, but from my experience, it can be different for each game. If you can't figure out what exact font you need, you can always try the allfonts option in winetricks. When running the game, you have to change the value of the LANG environment variable to your region of choice. For Japanese games, LANG="ja_JP.UTF-8" seems to work, but there are other Japanese character sets you may need to use, depending on the situation. Additionally, you may have a problem where the game cannot access the files. I haven't entirely figured this one out myself, but I think it has something to do with the filesystem not supporting the character set that the filenames are encoded in. If that is the case, it can be solved by creating a disk image that supports said character set, mounting it, and installing the game there. NTFS should work, I think. Also, if you download the game in a compressed file, you need to make sure the program you use to extract it properly supports the character set that the filenames are encoded in.

If you want to use Cheat Engine or a trainer with a game, you must run it in the same wine prefix.

If you want to use Cheat Engine with a game that runs natively on Linux, you must run ceserver and run Cheat Engine in wine. Then in Cheat Engine, you must connect to localhost and select a process. Also, in order to get certain things to look correct in Cheat Engine, you have to install a font in the prefix, but I don't know which one. I think it might be Courier New, but I'm not certain.

Implying anyone plays multiplayer shit anymore. Even mmos are dead, and most online crap is now exclusively on phones, even weebs are. What's important is stuff like Cyberpunk 2077 that is even if its shit you're gonna try it out, and its not going to run on wine for a while. And Starfield/TESVI. Maybe Farcry 6 if you're into that.

Eventually you'll want to try the new shit. Even if you'll delete it after 30 minutes of playing and say it was in fact a shit.

Its like that Marilyn Manson song. The new shit is always exiting because its new, and once it stops being new its no longer exiting.

Point being its the freshness of shit that gets people attracted. Not few years after it works without lags on wine.

ESPECIALLY with modern games (since everything just uses the same 3 engines and prefab code), that only the case with pinhead dipshit drm or anticheat.

Or something REALLY fucking rare like the dumbass chromium calls in software which can be fixed by just having chromium available.

best solution I've found is just to have two computers. one running latest pozzed NSA Windows 10 and just use it for gaming like its a console. and for all other computing use a Linux distro (mint, manjaro, or pop os for a bit of linux native gaming) dual booting has always been trouble for me. so just get a cheep laptop or use older parts to build a nice linux machine as linux doesn't need a beast of a system to be good and responsive. all the expensive hardware like GPUs and shit can go to the win10 system. at least that's how I roll and it works great for me.
