Spent countless hours autistically researching and thinking about lore for this game.

If anyone have any lore related question for Bloodborne go ahead and ask me.

Why are guns so weak?

>Why are guns so weak?

Because hunters were improvising weapons from random scrap that was laying around in workshop, making them not as effective as trick weapons. Then Gehrman started using guns as a method of defens, just to slow down rushing enemies before slaying them with his burial blade. From then on other hunters started using guns in a same way as Gehrman

Because in Bloodborne's world guns are used as a defense more so then offens.

>does the doll have a vagina ? and can she have babies with it ?

If you get to the workshop in "real world", not the one in Hunter's dream, you can see doll laying in the corner of the room. If you try and interact it just says "plain doll" and that's it. Gehrman was good when it comes to making things, it was usually weapons, but in case of that doll he made it after this chick Maria died. You can say that he was kinda of obsessed with her in some way because after she died he did bring her corpse to his workshop and buried her there. Then Moon Presence created Hunter's Dream based on memories of Gehrman and trapped poor bastard. This is the moment when doll comes to life. At first Gehrman was probably happy to see Maria, even if it wasn't real one but after being there for who knows how long, he started to hate doll because personality wise, doll is nothing like Maria. When you get there he acts like she doesn't exists. Perhaps because he realized that the doll is just a thing that serves as a means of powering up Moon Presence by taking away blood echoes in exchange for you not going insane, this is why your character gets stronger each time you give away your blood echos. If you reach third ending in which you become baby Great One, doll will take care of you until you become strong enough. She does that by taking away blood echoes from hunters that are bound to the Dream. When you get older, you become Moon Presence and then wait for someone to get to you, and if that someone kills you, then he becomes baby great one and loop continues. So in a sense she is "mother" figure.

>how can just a human be able to kill bunch of elder tentacle gods ?

Because making contract and becoming a "hunter" bounds you to the Hunter's dream. Meaning every time you die, you don't actually die, but insted go there. And from there you can try again and again until you do succeed. Basically, if you can't die and have infinite amount of time to do something, you will eventually do it.

>and is gehrman a german ?

No, he was from Yharnam

I think paleblood refers to a sort of affliction the player character is suffering from, likely the very one they’re receiving the Yharnam blood transfusion for. The note at the beginning of the game that reads ‘Seek Paleblood to transcend The Hunt’ was not written for the player character but rather for the blood minister who attended them. So either the Blood Minister or another force working through him wanted you (the player character) and your ‘Paleblood’.

Following this line of thinking, I used to think that this Paleblood disease was a prerequisite for being able to access the Hunter’s Dream and be manipulated by the Moon Presence, but I’m pretty sure that any ‘Hunter’ qualifies really. No, I think Paleblood is what allows the player character to use the Great Ones’ umbilical cords to ascend into a Great One themselves, kill the Moon Presence, and ‘transcend’ The Hunt (as in the Moon Presence using hunters to kill rival Great Ones and their children) by having destroyed its source. The blood of Great Ones and their Kin is an opaque, pale serum as well, so that something to consider.

What is the ultimate goal of the Moon Presence? What happened with Kos/Orphan? Why are there so many Amygdala in Yharnam? Explain Oedon? Where do the Great Ones come from (space)? What's the deal with Ebrietas? Why did the blood turn Yharnamites into Beasts and you into a hunter? What is the origin of the Blood? Why does the sky turn blue and the moon red in the later half of the game? Who were the Pthumerians? Finally, what is are the Chalice Dungeons/Labyrinth?

I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but Bloodborne is my favorite game and I would love to know more.

Here's why this anon is wrong

>The note at the beginning of the game that reads ‘Seek Paleblood to transcend The Hunt’ was not written for the player character but rather for the blood minister who attended them.

Let's use all the evidence that we can gather from the opening cutscene and reconstruct what is actually happening there.

Fact is that your character was sleeping on that table and blood minister woke him up by saying: "Ah yes, paleblood… Well, you've come to the right place." However, he says that line as if your character asked him about paleblood, which is not possible because he was sleeping. Meaning that note was in that room when blood minister arrived there to preform blood transfusion on your character. But from the way he says it, he seems surprised by it, it implies that note wasn't in that clinic before your character arrived there. One thing that is for sure to happen from that blood transfusion is memory loss, or amnesia, which your character must of known about beforehand. What is happening there is very simple:

>Your character is outsider who got sick

>He hears about Yharnam and how people there know more about blood then anyone else

>He knows that blood from Yharnam will cure his sickness, but he also knows that it will fuck him up in so many different ways. Yharnam blood is related to the great ones and once you have it in you, you are theirs, they got you. He will had to sign a contract that will make him a hunter bound to the Hunter's Dream and in order to get away from there he will have to "transcend the hunt"

>He gets in the clinic, knowing that blood transfusion will cause him to lose his memory, he writes down note to himself "Seek Paleblood to transcend the hunt." So that when he wakes up he knows what to look for.

>He gets on the table, laying there waiting for blood minister, and falls asleep.

>Blood minister gets there, sees the note on the table, and puts it on the chair next to the table. Remember, blood minister is in wheelchair, so putting note on the chair is completely fine since he is at the same hight level.

>This is the moment when he gets near your character wakes him up: "Ah yes, paleblood… Well, you've come to the right place." As if, Yharnam, not the clinic itself.

Paleblood is basically different name for the great ones that your character will have to kill in order to escape from constant loop of dying and ending up in Hunter's Dream. Paleblood is literally blood from the old ones that started this whole thing.

Another interesting thing about that opening cutscene is passage of time, and let me tell you right away that significant amount of time has passed in between your character getting blood and waking up. Here's why, in that opening cutscene you can see through the windows that outside is night time, and when you wake up it's day time. This means at least 18 or so hours has passed. However when you consider that description of the bandages on your arm says: "Terribly worn" and those are bandages that blood minister put on you after he's done transfusion, so how can freshly put bandages be terribly worn when your character wakes up? Because he was probably sleeping there for days, if not weeks.

Very good observations. Also worth mentioning is that Paleblood could be another name referring to the Moon Presence itself. There is a note which can be found in the game which reads, "The nameless moon presence beckoned by Laurence and his associates. Paleblood". After the hunter kills MP, the cycle is broken and he/she becomes an infant Great One. Thus fulfilling the first note "Seek Paleblood to transcend the Hunt".

That's right, anon. It could be MP, or in my opinion it's referencing all of the old ones since you have to go through all of them to get to the MP. It's kind of just classification for that kind of beings.

Also I will try to answer your questions when I get home

I put your questions in chronological order so that you get how the plot of the game goes.

>Who were the Pthumerians?

>Where do the Great Ones come from (space)?

>What is the origin of the Blood?

>Finally, what is are the Chalice Dungeons/Labyrinth?

Pthumerians were group of people that stumbled upon entrance to the underground labyrinths. Once they found entrance and went inside they realized that there is more to uncover, so they began to excavate deeper and deeper inside those things. Soon after they uncover tombs of the Great Ones who are not actually dead but instead in everlasting "sleep" state. Bodys of the Great Ones where there inside those tombs, but they "existed" outside in "dream/nightmare" planes of existence that they created for themselves. Around that time they start using blood of the Great Ones in some kind of rituals and soon started using blood for its healing properties and to try elevate themselves closer to the Great Ones. Now, since Pthumerians differ from normal people, they were able to use blood without causing them to heave "side effects" from it. In fact, they got so close to the Great Ones that they actually established "communication" method with them by using "messengers" that they were able to see because of their level of insight. Statues of messengers can be found all over Pthumeru labyrinths because they were extremely important to that culture. All was great for a while. Until girl named Yharnam became queen. She made some kind of deal with one of the Great Ones there, and Ring of the Betrothal was symbolic representation of that deal. After that Great One impregnates her with child named Mergo. Around this time in distant part of the labyrinth named Loran shit goes down and scourge of beasts breaks out, some kind of civil war breaks out in between Pthumerians and queen Yharnam gets stuck inside the labyrinth meanwhile her people get out, seal the labyrinths so that they can only be open again through special rituals, and then they build new city on the surface. In honor of their queen, they name the city Yharnam. Another group of Pthumerians chose to separate themselves from the rest and they build Chainhurst Castle. There they decide to stay close to the traditions from the labyrinths. Thousands of years (or who knows how long, could be more then that) have been gone since then. Since consumption of blood among Pthumerians, who are now called Yharnamites heave decrease and they all forgot their own history through many generations, they have kind of "devolved" into let's say "regular humans". Since they lived on surface for such a long time, their skin is no longer pale white, their eyes are no longer big and black, they are not as tall as before and so on. Basically they are people that you see in Yharnam when playing through the game. However, since another group that build Chainhurst Castle stayed loyal to the old traditions, they weren't as "devolved" as people from Yharnam are. In fact, Chainhurst people still to this day closely resemble original look of the Pthumerians. So, as I said, thousands of years have passed, they forget their own history and all is well.

>What's the deal with Ebrietas?

>Why did the blood turn Yharnamites into Beasts and you into a hunter?

>What happened with Kos/Orphan?

>Why does the sky turn blue and the moon red in the later half of the game?

Until scholar's of Byrgenwerth uncover (again) old labyrinths, they figure out how to open those ancient seals on the doors, and start exploring it. First part of the labyrinth that they start exploring is land of Isz. There they find Ebrietes. After they got out, they realize that location of Ebrietes is right beneath Grand Cathedral in Yharnam, so from Byrgenwerth they get to Yharnam and in Grand Cathedral form a group called "The Choir". This is the time when they build lift in cathedral that takes them down to where Ebrietes is and they start experimenting with it, creating all kinds of weapons and things related to Arcane. Meanwhile another group from Byrgenwerth, with Laurence being leader of, starts to explore different parts of labyrinth and bring on surface old blood that they found there. Laurence realizes just how potent the blood is when it comes to healing and things of that nature so he brings it into the Yharnam and starts selling it to the people who live there. After consuming blood for little longer people start to experience negative effects of the blood, turning them into beasts and so on. This blood have that effect on people from Yharnam because they "devolved" over time and don't have same amount of tolerance as their predecessors Pthumerians. Those are beginning hours of the new scourge of the beasts and soon after it escalates into something much more terrifying. Blood Moon arrives, and is hanging above Yharnam turning everything into blood hungry beasts. Meanwhile, yet another group from Byrgenwerth that is run by Master Willem finds "Yharnam Stone" which is basically calcified baby Mergo and they start to experimenting with it in order to summon Great Ones that will grant them "elevated-godlike" status. Master Willem has to choose one of the students who he thinks would be most fitting for that kind of mission. He chooses girl named "Rom". This does not sit well with another student at Byrgenwerth named "Micholas". Micholas thinks he would be perfect candidate for that kind of job because of his great intelligence, and is actively fighting against Master's Willem decision. Master Willem doesn't listen to Micholas and proceeds with ritual, ritual goes horrible wrong, half of the Byrgenwerth academy disappearing into another plain of existence, Rom turns into that spider creature, some kind of unbalance happens through out all plains of existence and Great one "Kos" falls from "Nightmare Frontier" into the sea near the Fishing Helmet. Another thing that happens from that ritual is that it somehow stops the "Blood Moon" and scourge of the beasts. Problem being that it is already too late because there is so much people that turned into beasts.

Laurence realizes what he did and trys to fix it by first establishing "Hunter's workshop" together with Gehrman and couple of other people. They hear stories about Great One Kos falling into the sea, so they get into the Fishing Helmet and slaughtered Kos. Kos ends up on the shore of the Fishing Helmet and parasites from the corpse infect whole population of that village. Now shit really hits the fan and things couldn't get any worse. There's too many beasts rooming around the streets. Many of the Hunters get slaughtered by beasts and soon there will be no one left to hunt. So him and Gehrman make deal with Great One Moon Presence. This is how deal goes: Make everyone who chooses to be a hunter bound to the Hunter's Dream so that hunters can't die and have chance to clean up city from the beasts, and I, Laurence, will go into the Pthumerian Labyrinth and bring you baby Mergo from queen Yharnam. So that's exactly what Moon Presence does. Laurence goes into the labyrinths and says to Gehrman to wait for him in Hunter's Dream. Unfortunately while being inside labyrinth he turns into Bloodletting Beast and stays there. Gehrman still waiting for him to this day. Meanwhile in Byrgenwerth, Micholas frustrated that Master Willem didn't listen to him decide to leave the academy with some students that were on his side, he takes with him baby Mergo stone and they settle in small village called Yahar'gul, and there they create "Mensis" society. With main purpose being to try and summon Great One Kos yet again, this time Micholas being the one who will try and ask Kos to turn him into the Great One. So they have Mergo stone and they recreate the ritual but this time it doesn't work. It doesn't work because Rom is somehow holding Blood Moon from appearing again. So they try all kinds of things to try and summon Kos and by doing all those things they uncover another plain that they can visit. So they call it "Nightmare of Mensis". Micholas goes there, and this is the moment when your character kills Rom allowing Blood Moon to appear and ritual in Yahar'gul finally working, the only problem being that Micholas has been in Nightmare of Mensis for so long that his physical body dies and he gets trapped there.

Plot goes something like that

>How much of it is based on facts/evidence and how much is your own interpretation?

Pretty much everything is based on visual or descriptive evidence inside the game. I only made it to look like actual plot since game is so difficult to put in some kind of chronological order.

>Also, was it ever explained what connection the Moon Presence has with the moon and why it manipulates you into killing other Great Ones?

I think blood moon outside Hunter's Dream is Moon Presence because moon that is in Yharnam behaves the same way as the one in Hunter's Dream. Like how clouds can go behind it, meaning it's not somewhere in space but instead inside Earth's atmosfere. For some reason every Great One losses it child and then trys to get it back. It's unclear why is that the case. Laurence made deal with Moon Presence to bring back Mergo in exchange for MP making hunters basically immortal, which implies that Mergo is child of the MP. And there are some evidences for that, like for example how if you play a lot of root chalices, that altair in queen Yharnam room will turn into red Hunter's Mark, and hunters mark is associated with MP as being symbol of it. So since Laurence turned into beast and can no longer bring MP Mergo, MP is keeping it promise to make Hunters immortal until someone manage to bring back Mergo.

Every so often the bells ring and the huntsmen (The tall enemies in central Yharnam screaming "YOU ARE NOT WANTED 'ERE") and Hunters (Professionals such as yourself) come out and stab the beasts and people who are going to become beasts. The night the game takes place in is a particularly bad outbreak, and basically everyone except you and a few others already have the Dog Aids, but dont really realise because it seemingly makes you rather delirious.

A similarly (but not quite so) bad outbreak occurred before the game began, and due to it they burned down and sealed off an entire section of the City (Old Yharnam is part of Yharnam proper)

Hunts are very common, they're just normally pretty small in scale, when compared to the game's hunt. It's not entirely clear why it's quite so bad as it is on this particular night. It could have been the fault of the Church, it could have been the fault of the school of Mensis/Yahar'gul, or it could have been the Moon Presence fucking about, though the beast plague is somewhat a seperate thing to the Great Ones and their influence.

Whether it bursts into flame due to your willpower, or the actions of the Moon Presence is another story.

I have the same notion and I would even go further to suggest that this vision also shows the kind of beast you would have become if you had turned into one (werewolf).

Let's talk about what happens after you achieve the true ending. Is Yharnam somehow saved? Does it return to normal? Is the beast plague cured? I mean, the way I see it. It's really up to the player whether they want to become a benevolent Great One when he/she grows up or an evil one. The Moon Presence was assuredly evil but that doesn't necessarily have to be the case with the Good Hunter.

It's definitely because of MP because before blood minister gives you blood you have to sign contract that makes you a hunter. Character creation screen is definitely a contract to become hunter because it has hunter symbol as watermark on it. So the only reason you do not die from that blood is because after you've become hunter bound to the Hunter's Dream you can't die.

Unlike you, I don't need other people to tell me what to think about some game. I figured out everything that I did on my own, so I don't know how much of that is well know or already covered by your favorite jewtubers

Yeah…..no….first response made pretty clear my “autistic screeching” hit some kind of nerve

But if my low-effort shitposting really makes you so mad, I’ll keep doing it.

>Laurence goes into the labyrinths and says to Gehrman to wait for him in Hunter's Dream. Unfortunately while being inside labyrinth he turns into Bloodletting Beast and stays there.

Laurence was the first Cleric Beast. His skull is in the Grand Cathedral and you need it for the memory of the motto/password to advance further. It's why you fight him in the Hunter's Nightmare later on because he's still stuck there, dead in the real world. Laurence didn't lose himself in the labyrinth, he succumbed to the beast plague because he was drenched in blood and Insight from the hunts.

I think there are multiple interpretations, but I don't think paleblood is a name for the old ones who you are supposed to kill

the note was for the bloodminister, not you.

>Seek paleblood to transcend the hunt"

is him looking for someone with the white blood cells(paleblood) that would fight off the scourge(the Bloodborne pathogen). Someone who could keep taking the blood transfusions and not transform, transcending the normal limitations of a hunter, and end the nightmare.

The other interpretation is the note is for you, like you said. BUT, all the old ones bleed red. They aren't the palebloods. The palebloods who bleed Serum are Master Willem, Ebrietas, Rom,

celestials. All people who became KIN of the great ones. Ebrietas is the DAUGHTER of the cosmos, who was left behind. She isn't a real greatone. You are trying to become kin, transcend humankind, and stopping the moon prescence.

I'm gonna be playing Bloodborne for the first time, my PS4 is literally arriving in a couple hours. What's the most important thing for me to know lore-wise going in? I'd assume I have a pretty good grasp on the mechanics considering I've finished the rest of the souls games.

>mechanics

Get used to dodging A LOT since your counters are limited to 20 bullets, say goodbye to the stamina bar, and you can regain health for like 3 seconds after getting hit ( bloodborne wants you to play aggresively )

>lore

Like every Souls. Read every item description, talk to every NPC and when you finish the game, watch fagividya's multiple lore videos, if you can get used to his fake nasal accent.
