leaving aside that it was a generic multiplayer fps with a shadowrun skin, a large part if its problem comes from crossplay

the devs drastically overcompensated with aim assist on the console version, leaving controller users with a clear edge over KBM

and then they had the audacity to claim it was a science experiment to show that controllers had greater accuracy

>Is Cyberpunk 2077 gonna suck?

it's not impossible for it to average out to pretty good. Mike Pondsmith, the coolest guy in tabletop, still has creative control and he's not bowing to the whiners

>isn't Cyberpunk and Shadowrun just about the same thing?

not really; there's some differences in overall approach

Shadowrun came about as it did because FASA was working on a cyberpunk-themed tabletop RPG when R. Talsorian beat them to press. So they took the system and mixed the setting with Dungeons and Dragons

In Shadowrun you can usually think of the corps as villains while in Cyberpunk they're closer to being background.

Cyberpunk places little emphasis on race and racism as plot elements (even admonishing the as yet non-prominent social justice attitudes of everyone crying for more "equality" in one of the sourcebooks) while in Shadowrun it's always been somewhat at the forefront

Shadowrun emphasizes worrying about cybernetics vs spiritual essence, Cyberpunk has a foldup bartender's kit that you can stick in your leg

I still remember how they promised different starting backgrounds like DA:O did to break the oppressed/disillusioned edgelord start cliche in the genre. Now what we got exactly? The disillusioned cop start? Fucking fantastic. I expect GTA 2077 with antifa and anarchists. If we lucky we might able to join the cartoon villain tier corporates to get the bad ending for our MC.

Fuck, why couldn't they just stick with their original vision? Setting your on goals, shaping your own gameplay, twist the ending of the story by your own taste. VtMB was so close to do it perfect, they should just copy that shit with the fuck ton of money they got from Witcher.

The Shadowrun cross-platform multiplayer game was like a good version of what Valorant and other faggy hero shooters are like today. It was Counter-Strike with cybernetic and magic powers from the Shadowrun universe. There was a round system and economy just like CS, but you would also use those to buy magic powers and cyber enhancements a la carte instead of picking hero loadouts. You could go full street samurai and get cybered up with a katana, or go troll with a minigun, or be a faggy elf with resurrection and healing powers. You could pick your metahuman type (race) independently as well and they had differing bonuses, like dwarven magic resistance and the trolls getting a layer of armor that you had to destroy before you could kill them. There was also hacking and elements in the level that you could fuck around with using hacking. It was a pretty interesting game, and despite the somewhat weird art style (a little bit too cartoony for a dark and gritty cyberpunk universe), it was a fun interpretation of the Shadowrun universe. If you don't like multiplayer or the round structure of CS, naturally you won't like it though. And it had some technical issues as this guy mentions:

5e is just gay. 4e is okay but requires some house rule changes (namely to the gun firing mechanics because as usual tabletop devs are no guns faggots who don't know shit) and is tedious to play without proper tools due to the combat mechanics. Also quite a few of the splatbooks are dogshit so if you're using Chummer or something similar, you'd have to know to not include those. It's fun but I can understand why people wouldn't want to play it.

The Genesis Shadowrun failed so badly in the character development department.

You buy the best gun and armor in the game right at the beginning and never really upgrade. Lots of useless or pointless stats. The matrix is just a mini-game that never really gets incorporated into the main quest. The only impressive thing about it is the attempt to create an "open world" sandbox RPG on the Genesis even if it's a really small and limited one. I also found the main story to be quite boring and short.

The Snes game has much better story and character development.

>Apparently it's because the editor is poorly documented and doesn't let you add any new assets except portraits and static props. If only more CRPGs had a toolset like NWN…

Sadly this probably won't happen except for a once-in-an-eon successful Kickstarter, and even then it is less than likely. The devs for Aurora engine made their own scripting language for NWN and did intelligent things like make the modules tile-based so you could rearrange the tiles however you wanted without having to download new assets. Tribes did a similar thing except the map terrain was unchangeable, but you could place or remove as many buildings or other models that you wanted, resulting in endless download-free custom maps. You don't get the resources for projects like these any more because the investor and suits back then knew nothing about games and acknowledged that, so they gave a chunk of money and a deadline to a bunch of eager developers and said "You guys do whatever but it better be playable." Now we have reached a much worse state, which is that those investors and suits think they've seen enough market data to make decisions, so they only allocate resources to giant teams or safe projects and micromanage the time allotted. Plus the prevailing wisdom among them is now "allowing players to create their own content is bad because they won't buy ours," even when they don't produce any actual fucking content.

Unfortunately, you're probably right.

I wouldn't even mind NWN being the only place to go, if not for its two major flaws: the magic system (I really dislike Vancian magic) and the lack of full party control. The former could probably be changed by some dedicated modders, but the latter is hardcoded. Not having control over your party greatly limits what you can do as a player, which therefore limits what module builders can do with encounter design and companion design. For example, mage companions are essentially useless. I don't think it's a coincidence that almost none of the modules I've played gave you pure casters as companions. It's because people know that you can't trust the AI to handle spellcasting properly. The lack of control makes the game feel incomplete to me. I also really don't care for RTWP combat, but I could live with it if I could at least have control over everyone. Without its fatal flaws, NWN would be damn near perfect, not just because of the toolset, but because it's also pretty easy to add new assets. You could turn it into a sci-fi setting like Shadowrun if you wanted.

I think one good moddable game could sustain a whole genre. Freespace 2 is a tremendous success story in that regard. It's so open and accessible that you could use it to make pretty much anything you wanted in the context of a mission-based space sim, so you don't really need anything else. I don't lament the lack of any new space sims with modding tools and mission editors, because they aren't necessary - FS2 already has it covered. NWN could have been the FS2 of CRPGs, but its flaws keep it from getting there, so I'm left to hope that something new will come along to be what it should have been.

Just play on a multiplayer server. SP modules for this game are boring, with some honorable exceptions.

Also, there are tons of great sp modules for nwn1, with The Prophet series being the best.

Neverwinter Nights 2 had full party control, but I don't know how good the modding tools are for that one. I remember liking the second game much more than the first one, precisely because I would have a four character party and control each member myself, even though it ran like dogshit on my graphics card.

Well, /v/ game nights were always popular, I don't see the problem.

Seriously though, the community isn't all that bad. It has its bad eggs, but all groups of people do. There's enough reasonable people who know how to play to make it worth your while.

I don't play multiplayer in any game. Besides, the existence of multiplayer is no excuse for the game wasting so much potential.

I'd dispute that. Prophet is just the same thing over and over again. If you ask me, Tales of Arterra is the best NWN module series.

>Neverwinter Nights 2 had full party control, but I don't know how good the modding tools are for that one.

My understanding is that they were a lot harder to use, and therefore weren't used nearly as much. For one thing, it was harder to make environments, because they weren't tile-based anymore. NWN2 also didn't have the piece-by-piece armor customization that the first game had. And frankly, I hated pretty much everything about NWN2 except for the fact that it had full party control.

entirely believable although I have no actual evidence. This is how MBAs think. Every single positive experience or aspect of a game must be turned into a monetary transaction.

A reasonable core written in C++ with all gameplay, including character control, and AI written in Lua, with interchangeable environment building blocks. Basically a modularized turn-based combat game core is what we want? I'm building a dungeon crawler with C++/OpenGL but implementing all gameplay with LuaJIT. It's not even that hard. Although, I hadn't considered scripting the actual player input functions and party control. It wouldn't hurt performance though so I guess I might as well do it and allow input to come from network, keyboard/mouse, or AI.

I don't know anything about the tech side of things, but my suggestion as a player would be to just copy everything about NWN1 except the magic system, make it turn-based, and add full party control. Are you planning to create a toolset and allow modding?
