An extremely small minority of people are cursed with the concept of "taste". Decades ago, a large portion of people who liked video games were this type of person. As pedowood ceded more and more financial ground to the burgeoning video game market, media companies jumped on that gravy train and started telling people that games were cool. This came to a head in 2007, when it became "cool" and "hip" to have an iPhone, whereas people previously thought that having a computer made you some sort of freak. Now instant web access and "games" were in the hands of a billion retards with no ability to manage their money. I could rewrite the entire game's code, while helping Penny with her homework, and cleaning up brain's doody, all at the same time! He's a nerd, and I hate nerds more than I hate MAD agents. What an asshole! He may not have a powerful cybernetic brain like yours, but I think that the kid used Minecraft in a unique, and complex, yet beautiful way, making the adaptation of– I told you to shut up, but you didn't listen. It's child friendly without being complete shovelware and it also appeals to adults, which is extremely rare. When you build shit it feels like you're laying it brick by brick. Just like legos. It feels very natural and even digging out the resources feels natural. Combined with the fact it's at the perfect scale for people to make shitty box buildings and gigantic autismo recreations of fantasy areas it has a absolutely massive audience to work with.

I think the theoretical Minecraft 2 would have to have things like the ability to create custom blocks and entities in-game, so that players could more easily create other worlds besides just the default light medieval fantasy one. If you actually look into how Minecraft works, it's amazing it even runs as well as it does. Notch was an amateur when he made the game— hell you could say he still is— and the chunk system really reflects that. Microsoft, despite porting the game out of Java, didn't do much of anything to actually improve its performance either.

Terraria is more-or-less what Minecraft should be, but in 2D. Assloads of content built upon a solid foundation. Instead Notch just kept faffing around with new gameplay systems that didn't make it past the proof-of-concept phase. It's a game that looks to me, a programmer, like what I would do if I wanted to have fun and muck about with a game engine. The resulting game looks like a giant tech demo. Of course, many of what I consider the greatest games are still tech demos (any id game for example) but those games still had at least a few fully fleshed out features that made me want to keep playing. Minecraft has a fairly fleshed out building system… but everything else is very half-baked.

I don't know if any game actually did what Minecraft did before Minecraft. There may have been mining games, building games, survival games, but Minecraft bought it all together in a way that felt good. After that point, it's just brand recognition. I'm sure there are way better Minecraft clones now.
There is also just something innately charming about a game that's made by some guy in his free time. It's like home cooking. Sometimes the professional sheen actually takes something away.

It's not even a good building game, if anything there are Minecraft knock-offs that have better toolkits. The sound fx is terrible/annoying and random blocks have gravity. Survival is clearly terrible and online even more so.
