Remember this story where aliens attack Earth and they are so much more advanced than we, that we have nothing to fight them with?
Remember this story about super intelligent race coming to visit us and we struggle to even communicate, because we are dumdums.
How about the opposite? Games where humans are powerful and smart. Story driven games that show how intelligence, meritocracy and strong will can conquer a galaxy? Are there any games to speak of? Other than basic 4X, obviously. 40k is out also
XCOM was my first though, but in the old and new, humans are shown as the underdogs, which is ok since it works really well with the story.
Mass Effect is a good contender, but fails, because they make every alien human, just with different stereotypical quirks. They even fuck up the Borg, eh, sorry The AI, sorry The Collective. Fuck, it's probably called The Machine in episode 3. Who cares.
I would like to hear your thoughts about Humans being smart and productive in scifi games. Share ideas if you have any.

I've been tinkering with an idea. You're 18, just got your first ship. You're an earthling in an age when earth is used-up and forgotten by the bulk of humanity who've colonized the solar system a few centuries ago. Achieving your dream of leaving behind the bucolic mediocrity of earth for the "big city" of the colonies disillusions you: the colonies are all failing and corrupt rat utopias, worse off than the place you wanted to escape.
You still have the impulse that drove you to go to space when everyone you know was content to live an agrarian life, so you gather the high-functioning people you can find while surviving the internecine squabbles, the petty space cops and other hazards, and drive toward one of three ends:
1. Instigate war between the colonies to shake them from their complacency
2. Develop an interstellar ship meaning cryosleep or generational
3. Rebuild Earth as a new utopia.
The thing I originally wanted to write was just some autistic racing thing in microgravity. Then I thought about the places you would be racing in and what the tracks would look like, and since it would be a top-down kind of thing like Death Rally or RC Pro-am where combat is built-in anyway, it's hard not to creep the scope to something more open like Armada it's a dreamcast game; look it up all the way to "GTA in space." But I think that's what it ought to be, sort of like Solar Winds DOS: a little talky, a little shooty, but also where this KANSEI DORIFUTO racing guy is using his winnings in revolutionary pursuits, to either tip over that which deserves to fall like ra's al ghul, or to otherwise restart civilization as a project, and one that is no longer divorced from the numinous.

The Collective? You mean the Geth? They were not Borg-like. They were pure androids (not cyborgs seeking perfection) and just ex-servant bots who rebelled. Almost like children who simply wanted to be left alone, but people kept bugging them.
I have to say that I like both tropes, but there isn't enough of what you're talking about. You're right. I'm drawing a blank actually.

I feel like it would never work out. Especially in the current political climate. Aside from 4X games and what not that is. Lets face it current western devs would just turn the game into something like that movie Avatar where the humans are top dog tech wise. So the entire story is centered around the idiot hipster blue natives who are basically just like blue native Americans except they are actually connected to their planet. Anyway pretty sure thats how it would go. Even mass effect while showing that humans were no slouches was all about cooperation and what not. The renegade humanity first thing only lasted until the end of the first game. Yeah Cerberus group felt the same in the second game but they were a freaking terrorist group for the most part.
Maybe they should do a continuation of that where a fleet from earth comes and nukes the planet to cinders while forcing that race traitor guy watch his precious navi all die in a cell from orbit.

aside from generic space nazis as villains the only thing that comes to mind are the many variants of Space Marine that are neither the Doom Slayer nor the Adeptus Astartes
Gen 7 was choke full of generic Not-Halo FPSs and they were all as shit as their MC space marine was as boring as generic just like Halo

I've always liked the EDF's approach. A sheer persistence to continue fighting no matter what.
>Smart enough to completely reverse engineer enemy tech quickly and give their troops ridiculously powerful weapons that can level an entire city or destroy an alien ship from the ground
>Also somehow retarded enough to the point that it took them 3 months to figure out to shoot the giant glowing red opening under a ship
>The entire mission where frog ayys were introduced and everybody thought they looked like humans
Though I've always preferred silly shit over anything serious.

Mass Effect? That's because BioWare can only do one story. In hindsight the Reapers were a massive crutch and should have just been stopped in the first game.

Apparently, they actually tried to break from that formula at first.. or at least, the lead writer had a few ideas floating in his head. The original plot point was more convoluted and hinted at dark energy collapsing the galaxy (not AI) and the Reapers were merely trying to stabilize it. They saw new spacefaring humans on the scene (especially biotics) as the key to the problem somehow. This is why they experimented and started mass kidnapping. They weren't evil, just indifferent problem solvers.. and didn't give a shit about an AI singularity. You can see some of it in Harbinger's quotes, for example:
To Legion: “Geth; an annoyance, limited utility.”
Asari: "Asari; reliance upon alien species for reproduction shows genetic weakness.”
Jack: “Human; viable possibility, great biotic potential.”
Miranda: “Human; viable possibility, impressive genetic malleability.”
Grunt: “Krogan; sterilised race, potential wasted.”
Basically, it's kind of what the OP wanted: an ascendant, strong human race.. but in this plot point, it turns out to be a curse. Humans attract the Reapers because of their potential.

Someone should write a game where the protagonist is sees the great evil suddenly emerge, but he's too fucking old to do anything about it so the game is about using and maintaining a futuristic riding mower.

Really, it's kind of silly to expect game writing to ever improve. There's too many other logistics/rewrites/studio-publisher politics/faggot tranny politics/bitchy gamer politics/etc/etc/etc that all get in the way. The best you can hope for is that the game simply doesn't run like shit. It's a miracle that even films get made, but strangely, even they have more going for them than this.

There's Starship Troopers. I dont know about the game 'cause I never played the game but if the setting is like the book or the movies then humans are depicted as the most technologically advanced race (out of two) and the aliens are dumb chink communists that deserve to be exterminated just for defiling human eyes with their image. Especially in the book since there humans had power armor, mini-nukes, orbital drop troopers, FTL, and it's heavily implied that humanity started the war just to manufacture unity among mankind

No what they should of done was instead of concentrating on getting yet another new party of losers in the second game. Instead they should of had you with your existing team members and a few new ones go around and start actually preparing for war. Building armies and dealing with the troubles of various groups to prepare for the war effort. The destruction of the collector base is a grand battle that kicks off the main war. In part 3 its all about the main war going from place to place participating in epic battles with tons of ships as well as smaller more tactical battles. Finally the reapers are defeated but not from some idiotic deus ex machina plot device but good old fashioned military tactics might heroism and a bit of luck.
The main plot of the reapers should be something along the line they fear biological civilization getting too advanced and depleting the galaxy of dark energy and bringing about destruction. The reapers will be a sort of tragic villain in that they do have respect for life and what not and allow it to advance but are forced to cull it when they go to far. The species that never advance too far are simply left alone. With the reapers defeated the final revelation should be that the milky way is not the only galaxy that has them that they in fact exist in many galaxies but the reapers are uncertain how far they spread as the distances are too great to communicate. Still the defeat of the milky way reapers means the people of that galaxy take the galaxy into their own hands. If they treat it well they will be fine. If they abuse it will collapse and all will perish in it.
I guess it doesn't matter now though. Bioware is garbage and unless the studio is sold and people that are competent start working there they will never produce anything of worth again. Its just a decaying husk at this point after EA sucked it dry running off all the talent leaving only SJW intern diversity hires.
