I find the idea of trying to integrate ADVENT remnants into society interesting, but it should have nothing to do with XCOM in-universe. Is there any faction that would even consider doing this? My guess would be EXALT somehow maintaining cooperation with ADVENT and even given overseer positions (maybe ADVENT found their genetech more advanced somehow?), or we could just be playing the ADVENT remnants themselves doing some enlightened despot type stuff, with wider human liberties and further modifying your aliens regain their free will and/or be friendlier to humans. all-in-all, XCOM should be the last group associated with this if you're trying to stop an alien race riot that destroys the city.

I completely ignored Phoenix Point along with all the other EGS exclusive games. Turns out a lot of the games they've been buying up are just like a lot of the shoveware taking up space on steam; high concept, low delivery garbage only Steam gets paid to list your game rather than the other way around. Two years in and EGS is no more appealing than it was at the start.

Basically from what I can see from the gameplay footage it's limited to player->enemy turns. As for boosting, apparently you get a one time boost to a character to jump to the top of the queue. I don't know, considering Firaxis' previous 4 installments I think I can safely say mods will try to fix it. One thing I hate is that they touched on an interesting idea in Enemy Within when first unlocking Meld, but never went anywhere with it. The debate on the path of humanity for the future and what lengths we would go to secure victory is not a novel concept, but blending that idea with the mechanics of XCOM would have been great if done properly. At first it seemed like they wanted to do that, what with the MECs requiring you to undergo a quadruple amputation to use them, but again that idea never went anywhere. I think what would really have worked is if you introduced cybernetics initially as minor upgrades, before making them more invasive and ending where the soldier is essentially either a brain in a mech or has his consciousness uploaded into a combat computer. Gene modding could have been very similar. In EW the most major gene mod was a secondary heart or the chameleon skin, but again those were both simply upgrades. That's fine to start, but mid-late game gene mods should be major changes, like massive muscle growth or other body modifications.
The thing you can do with both of these is call into question the nature of what it means to be human also. Forgive the 40K reference, but if your entire squad is essentially murder-servitors or look like they came out of a Haemonculi lab, that can seriously make you doubt whether these things can even be considered human anymore. Add downsides, if I splice part of a Muton's pain inhibiting elements into a solider it should come with increased aggression, a possibility that they act outside of my own orders. Make major modification something a soldier might not agree to, or not be comfortable working in a team that includes such things.
Part of this is different paths to a solution. If I want a tough shock trooper, I can mechanize one, turning him halfway to a cyborg. I could gene mod him, altering his entire form to something more suitable to combat. Of course I can avoid this by just having a normal human that's well equipped, but it won't have the same effectiveness. And that's where you can bring in the fourth option, Ayy Squadmates. Sub a Muton in and suddenly I dodge all the issues above but introduce new ones.
The nature of humanity and the Aliens in a post-war setting should be interesting. Each species should have desires, fears and benefits they bring to the discussion. The Mutons are great soldiers and fantastic physical labor but are based on a culture that values combat strength over all else, leaving them prone to violence where everyone else would debate or negotiate. Sectoids are split down a divide, where one half sees humanity as saviors from the Ethereals, while the others see us as simply new oppressors. The Vipers want government issued human husbands, while human women claim that means there won't be enough to go around, ect, ect. These issues raise the debate of what form the post-war society should look like. Does it become a vaguely equal society, where all of these things cause constant conflict, or do we adopt a system like the Ethereals, where we're at the top of a caste system?
I don't think you could fit all of this into an XCOM game easily without it getting off the original topic, fighting an ayy invasion, but it's still frustrating to me to see them acknowledge the issue in EW only to never bring it up again.
Also when XCOM 2 came out the #1 request was to have Ayy squadmates, so I'm seriously doubting that there's suddenly such a major "no-ayys in my squads" mentality but rather that it's more a reaction to the way they handled it

XCOM2 is practically Enemy Unknown with a new coat of paint. The "guerilla" setting for XCOM this time around means that you have a time limit for levels(so overwatch spam isn't allowed) and you get to get the drop on aliens on your first combat turn if you inch your way towards where you think enemies are. Otherwise it's pretty much the same as EU. Same bugs, same shitty AI, same tiny levels, same abilities and gear for your units, same lack of QoL. The game is literally "mods will fix it" and they barely do since you'll have to install at least 10 mods for the game to be playable and another 5-8 for it to be worth playing.

The timers in enemy within were mostly optional, only one or two type of missions were timed.
In xcom 2 almost every mission has a timer that you need to beat to succeed. This was done to balance the fact that advent and the aliens are underpowered. In enemy within the enemy scales properly with you, you can't have gear better than theirs, you are even at most. But in xcom 2 you are always ahead in the tech tree from the very start and you'll always stay ahead. You'll never struggle on the tactical side, it's always the fucking timer.
I told you, the game design in xcom 2 is utter shit.

The story is about as deep as the shallow end of a pond, the characters are about as cookie cutter as they get (gruff no-nonsense leader, intelligent alien, smart hacker, etc although I was amused by the fact that the team's bomb expert looks Middle Eastern and has a British accent)
Whoever was in charge of directing voice actors needs to be shot: If they don't sound like they are suicidal, they overact. The aliens also sound like humans, whilst you can hear the more gurgly versions on the radio.
Gameplay is shit and repetative: Set up the breach, jump in, shoot everyone, rince and repeat. They managed to fuck up the resource management too.
For a game that is driven about the limited roster of characters, the models look like shit. ESPECIALLY the aliens.
Everything feels recycled and fake, from the enemies, to the animations, to the sound effects.
Story is even more non-present than in the rest of the series. I am unsure how they managed to do that.
Difficulty is shit. Didn't need to restart a sinlge mission until one of the three main boss fights. The boss is just a more powered up psi grunt that becomes a bullet sponge if you do not remove some machines during the breach.
The game feels like a XCOM for smartphones. from the repetative gameplay, to shit presentation, its just disappointingly below average.
Pirate the shit out of it, or just play the older ones. You aren't missing anything.

what bugs me, though, is that all aliens look the same. Every alien NPC uses the same models, with almost no variations. So, every viper is like the one you fought in XCOM 2, all of the mutons look like they shat themselves, and for some reason, every sectoid still hasn't any lips, beside the one on your team.
and they all dressed in casual/lab human wear, depending on the mission.

First things, first. We all figured the story would be really dumb… and it is. At the start of the game, we're presented with 3 factions that have the means to assassinate Mayor We-Wuz-Humies-N-Shiet. The three factions mostly make sense in universe and boil down to psionic terrorists, alien scavengers, and remnant ADVENT forces. However, it's quickly revealed that there's a 4th faction, which is made up of old XCOM soldiers that don't want the Aliens intermingling with humans. This is presented as a huge shock, when anyone with a brain would remember the aliens recently turned humans into protein paste for their evil overlords. So, yeah, the story is pretty fucking retarded.

Second was the characters, I unlocked nearly half the roster and as was discussed here, many of them seemed to have past trauma that should put them at odds with the Chimera Squad. I'm not gonna insult you by going through each one, but they basically skirted past any problems with them serving in the same unit… by just not answering why they would. Also, I personally found the voice acting decent, but it was odd that none of the aliens had their vocies warped in any way. The lines were by far the biggest issue, though. Every character is either too quirky or too cool for school. It gets grating as hell.

Speaking of characters, they cut out a ton of content and options in this department. Which, is really fucking weird when you consider that a ton of this stuff was in the previous games. Doubly so because they've already reused assets from the other games, so it's weird they didn't bring in this stuff. In short, camo patterns, hair, tattoos, and scars are all gone. Guns with attachments no longer change the gun model, despite those old models still being in the game. Moreover, you have a tiny cast of characters which are married to their weapons. This was always a problem in the previous games, but you could at least change up a few of the classes guns. But, not in this game. You start with a shotgun and end with a shotgun.

The gameplay has been further watered down, if you can even believe it. The biggest change is that combat is now small encounters which are only about 1-2 rooms. This means the games loses both vertically, width, and the sniper class. It also means that overwatch has been changed to be cone-shaped as to avoid overwatch spam. Breaching was the hot new feature for the game, but I almost always found that you had option that was always better than the other one. Or, as pictured, a case where you just had a good and a better option. The new changing turn order is also a necessity, because turns need to alternate now that the maps are so small, so that you don't wipe the entire room on your first turn. That said, you almost always drop ½ the room upon entrance.

I've tried several steam workshop items, but they plain don't work as they should. Some models don't load, some are missing textures, I have no idea if weapons are balanced, sometimes it won't launch, it's a god damned shitshow.
The "recommended" mods and modpacks tend to be in conflict with one another and basically, I'm a fucking dumbass.
Loading into a save file after like half a year and being bombarded by emergency messages from every direction and DLC is a nightmare for my anxiety. Maybe DLCs were a mistake :^)
