Didn't see a thread in the catalog, really feel like playing something a bit more gritty, hopefully with more Lovecraftian/paranormal themes. I have already played F.E.A.R and Quake not a horror game technically but with horror elemetns and know of Call of Cthulhu.

Also general horror games thread.

I've heard a bit about it but haven't played it, it's a walking simulator, but I can definitely say that I've played the other game by the same creators Observer.

Observer was alright, it had some interesting writing pieces but in the end was nothing special and was kind of annoying at parts.

Some of that pixel crap can be actually pretty good. Though it's always hard to say, because usually games with pixel artstyle don't really differentiate themselves. It is only when you actually play them that you can see whether or not they are good.

Might sound dumb but I think the two 'The Evil Within' games are decent, at least in parts. First one definitely has its jump scares, but it pulls off the RE4 feeling of 'shit hitting the fan every other minute' vibe. The DLC levels starring the girl have more stealth and they have a few scary things going on, like some lamp lady chasing you. They ruined her in the sequel though. The second game to me actually has some moments that are scarier, but the whole game is more action. The scariest moment for me was when the main character is somehow stuck inside the hospital from the first game and as he starts exploring the game's UI slowly changes back to the first game's, which was noted for blocking 20%-30% of the screen for some reason. Not even with health or ammo, just like a movie theater sorta look. If you want multiplayer, there's Deceit, which is sorta like a Garry's mod mode called Trouble in Terrorist Town, where there are a few bad guys disguised as good guys and trying to eliminate the good guys as they escape. It's free, but it's literally just cosmetics. They stopped working on the game for a while because they were chasing the PUBG train and I think the original devs filed for bankruptcy or something. The new devs are updating fairly often though.

Darkwoods is okay. I didn't really love it like some people here do, but I definitely didn't dislike it either. Something about it didn't grab me, but its setting, art style and especially sound design are top fucking notch. I don't know if I've ever played a game where simply sleeping and advancing time is such a nail-biting experience; you can hear things stomping around in your house, tapping on windows, and even opening doors and looking around. For you.

My favorite horror franchise is Fatal Frame though. You could put a gun to my head and ask me why and I honestly couldn't tell you. FF3 is my favorite, but almost all of them are pretty good. Skip 4 and pirate 5.

Its a polish weeb, he already knows how to deal with leftist trash but he's probably trying to avoid a lynching and bad press by touching politics.

Game itself is kinda meme difficulty where skill checks and rolls will decide whether you get fucked now or get fucked later, but you can't possibly build for every situation so you're gonna get fucked. The combat is an interesting blend between turn-based and spending action points, and you know before hand how hard you'll get damaged every time you get hit so its either block/dodge everything or end the fight in as few turns as possible. You don't heal completely after each case, which makes beating the game somewhat of an endurance match. That kind of regimented gameplay turns it from learning the rules to git gud to learning the rules to break the game and actually win, but its a mirror of the Darkest Dungeon difficulty conundrum in that regard. Also the blend between J-horror and cthulhu mythos sometimes feels forced but when it channels Junji Ito it gels well.

Probably a basic answer, but I did like Dead Space. I thought playing with a headset really amplified the atmosphere with all those creepy whispers and all those noises the ship made. If you'd like to try an aside to the genre, Disaster Report (PS2), also called SOS - The Final Escape in europe, has you trying to survive an earthquake devastating an artificial island. Watching your hydration is key, and unfortunately you seem to retain water like a sieve

not so much horror that isn't of the purely human variety though (niggas with guns, a manic woman robbing a jewelry store, stuff like that)

Fuck it, I'm just going to talk about the rest of the series. Mild fellating implied:

Its sequel, released as Raw Danger, has the most ridiculous localization job I've ever seen (imagine a room full of clearly japanese people, over 90% of which are blonde), but as a game throws you in the middle of torrential rains fucking over an underground city and adds elements of having to watch your body temperature

Third one (PSP) was japan only, but again has an earthquake as the primary disaster. Interesting in this one is that you are now managing stress and how you handle it affects your personality. Translation patch in the works but not ready as far as I can tell

And finally Disaster Report 4, whose surprise of an english release earlier this month (don't tell me about how NISA announced it a year ago; I think at this point it's fair to completely ignore most NISA news) prompted me to take a look back at the series. Ironically for NISA, the translation seems to be incredibly faithful and, judging from some minor outrage from the usual suspects, uncensored.

It has a gog release in case you wanted to pirate it because >NISA

It's uncanny how it was originally cancelled; slated for release one day before the Tohoku quake when it was delayed for further development, promptly cancelled after the quake itself

rescued from being lost media by director Kazuma Koji's post-Irem company Granzella. They're also making a new R-Type. Now if only he could've rescued Steambot Chronicles 2

I don't know if I'd play the Dreamcast version (have read about some wonkiness), but it's a worthy successor to the original trilogy, if a little heavier on the combat later on (moving away from "should I run?" to "I'll just blast 'em"). Actually dark this time.

The GBC port is a technological marvel worth look at if you're into TECHNOLOGY

More eerie and creepy that real horror but I'll recommend neo scavenger. Sleeping in the middle of no where as the screen goes black and the small dread I get when the screen suddenly turns to the grey encounter box doesn't get old for me.

Turn-based RPG. You create your character using traits you want (strong, tough, weak, perceptive etc) and skills (melee, ranged, medicine etc), and you wake up in a cryo chamber in a post-apocalyptic world. It's really challenging since you start out with bare hands wearing a hospital gown, and you have to find clothes quickly or you'll freeze to death. After finding the basics you're presented with a constant struggle for food and water. There are quests and they're easy to find, but I won't spoil it for you. It's worth a try IMO.

The trick in that game is to always sleep in a plains tile because combat starts at range 20 on those and you'll have plenty of time to wake up and find the attackers.

It's a post apocalyptic hobo simulator.

It has many horror elements, not only the Cradle. Remember the stone statues muttering to themselves, or the Keeper executioners (or whatever they were called)?

This thread recently got me thinking about a game i used to play when i was young, this was back in 2010, i had this old IBM that had XP on it and i remember having this demo game sampler disc, i have no idea what the title is and my dad gave the game away a long time ago when i was still young.

You play as this weird moon crescent shaped space ship and play on what looks like the surface of the moon? the controls were wonky and you always scrape ur ship on the rocky landscape, the game was generally dark so ur ship waved its light wherever it faced, i remember seeing a cad-bury purple cover as its logo with an illustrated outline of the ship on it.

If any of you know of this game it would really help.

You fight these dementor looking alien things, and it has this weird star craft atmosphere, the game is 3D and the camera view isometric from what i remember.

i'm hazy on the details but i think it was on a disc full of trail version games that required you to log into gamespy, it also had star trek Klingon honor guard and abe's odyssey
