Gaym came out today and the ending leaked, proving how much of a fucking joke Volvo has become

>Much of Alyx’s story sees the titular character trying to reach the Vault, a floating behemoth hovering above City 17, kept airborne by a set of massive cables surrounding it. Alyx’s father, Eli, discovers that the Combine are keeping something inside the Vault. At first they suspect it’s a superweapon. Then Alyx learns (via a nod to future games) it is in fact, a living being. Everyone immediately assumes it’s Gordon Freeman, the protagonist of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Thus they set off to save him.

>Alyx decouples the cables powering the Vault (with the help of some friendly Vortigaunts) and a backup power generator. The Vault promptly crashes and Alyx is able to get onboard. There she initially discovers a surreal facsimile of different buildings, presumably within City 17, following a ghostly figure.

>Once Alyx passes through this area and makes quick work of some final Combine soldiers, she gets to Gordon’s containment cell. Only upon opening it does she discover that it’s not Gordon at all; the Combine have actually captured G-Man, the mysterious supernatural figure that stalks Gordon in past Half-Life games, still fitted with his iconic blue business suit and black briefcase.

>In return for his release, G-Man grants Alyx one favor. She immediately requests getting the Combine off of Earth but G-Man declines, reasoning that that is too big of a push. Instead, he has another idea…

>Suddenly, Alyx is subject to an out-of-body experience and time travels to end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. In that infamous cliffhanger from 2007, Gordon and Alyx are about to set out on a new mission when a Combine attack kills her father, leaving Alyx cradling him in her arms. Only now, G-Man reverses the scene just a few moments, giving Alyx a chance to kill the Combine. Eli picks himself up, alive and well, but is clearly in search of something.

>Alyx prepares to leave but G-Man informs her that, in return for this favor, she now works for him. The game transitions to the credits with a nod to Half-Life 1’s ending, leaving you with your jaw on the floor and plenty of questions you don’t think will be answered in the Half-Life: Alyx ending…

>Except, toward the end of the credits, you hear a voice. It’s Eli but noticeably different from how he’s sounded for the rest of the game. He’s gruffer, older like in Half-Life 2, and he’s not calling for Alyx; he’s calling for Gordon.

>The world fades back in and, boom, you’re Gordon Freeman, standing right where he stood at the end of Episode 2. Eli is alive and Dog is there too, but there’s no sign of Alyx. Eli seems to be perfectly aware of what’s happened, cursing “unforeseen consequences” and vowing to save Alyx. But, of course, he’ll need Gordon’s help to do that. So he hands you the crowbar and, just for a split second, you get to hold it before the game ends.

>it's fucking time travel that contradicts the end of Episode 2

>Volvo looked at Endgame and wanted to do that too

prepare for a clusterfuck of hatred like never before. why does everyone think they can do time travel now? it never turns out right and just raises more questions. episode 3 is essentially confirmed at this point, but they've fucked it up before they even started it. i'm not even mad, it's just a mixture of extreme disappointment and schadenfreude at what this series has become.

>why does everyone think they can do time travel now?

Because it gives them a cheap way to make the point of death meaningless in the long run. Just kill off as many characters as needed to give the public the "right" amount of drama, and then bring them back in the next episode so that "everything is fine".

Pavlov is the multiplayer one you are probably thinking of.

HL:Alexa is Valve's attempt to get casualfags into VR. Meanwhile anyone worth his salt knows that casualfags getting into something is always the death knell of said thing. And normalfags will never get into VR untill the price drops massively regardless.

what happened between Half-Life Alyx and Half-Life 2? Wouldn't her dad know what happened and try to prevent it? And why did G-Man say Gordon failed? Is he supposed to wipe out the combine? If so, why does G-Man not want to do that?

This seems shit.

Eli brought Alyx to work on the day the resonance cascade happened. GMan set things up so that the two of them could escape alive, at Eli's request.

It was already implied by GMan that he saw potential in Alyx as a future employee, or some shit like that. I think it was also implied Eli believed his daughter would be taken by GMan at some point as repayment for saving her life.

Gordon didn't really owe GMan anything at the end of Half-Life, either.

Alyx did a time jump into the future and didn’t return, so then where did the Alyx that was in Half Life 2 come from? Obviously there are two different timeline continuities now in Half Life.

One timeline where she didn’t find the G-Man at the end of this new game and thus continued through Half Life 2 as we know it (her dad died) and a second timeline where she met G-Man at the end of this game and saved her father.

In the Alyx game’s timeline, she just disappeared after finding the G-Man, leaving that timeline void of an Alyx for Half Life 2.

In the prime timeline, Alyx never had the option to save her dad, appeared in Half Life 2, and was then later deleted by the G-Man during the climax of Episode 2 because an Alyx from another timeline, who disappeared before Half Life 2 made a deal with G-Man to save an alternate timeline’s version of her father.

She doesn’t actually save her own father from her own timeline because she was taken out of time and those events at the end of Episode Two literally can’t happen. G-Man basically tricked her by making her think it was her dad.

Now it looks like they’re continuing games in the Prime timeline. Prime Alyx had nothing to do with the deal NuAlyx made and now suffers for it. NuAlyx will now have her own spin-off adventure totally separate from the Prime timeline.

From the prime timeline’s perspective, G-Man is just being a fag and took Alyx (because that timeline’s Alyx never made any deal).

I’m more interested in what a Half Life 2 would be in the NuAlyx timeline where Alyx disappeared before the events of Half Life 2 than continuing with the Prime timeline because the prime timeline is now shittily disturbed through inter-timeline meddling, throwing off all the character motivations and leaving the protagonists impossibly clueless as to what actually happened or why.

Modern storytelling. Stories aren't allowed to have key characters die. I bet that in Half Life 3 (if they even try making it), they'll make it so Alyx is saved in the end and everyone lives happily ever after.

I'm not saying everything should be grimdark though a Horus Heresy-themed video game would be awesome but having tragedy in your stories serve to make them better and more memorable.

To me it seems like Volvo saw Hunt down the Freeman, enjoyed that dumpster fire and then decided to make a game with that exact same idea of Gman saving people from the dead as a deal with the devil. Except with time travel this time.

In previous games he did not bring anyone back from the dead. He saved them from being killed but he didn't resurrect anyone. The only time that took place was with the Vortigaunts, who were acting independently and in defiance to his actions. But they didn't travel back into the past. With him being able to stop time, teleport and remotely communicate there's at least some rules to what he can and can't do. It also gives an explanation as to why he would even need Gordon for anything. But with the ability to travel backwards and forwards in time completely rewriting history on top of that, it's pretty much just a blank check. Which you are supposed to pretend has any logic governing it because of "muh employers" said so. It's like playing chess where you can rewind time to any singular move you have made to change it at will.

>>16887287

Also it gives them free reign to retcon anything they want. They could even make Alyx just as black has her new voice actor and that could still be explained away with time travel and alternate reality shenanigans. Time travel can be used to make really interesting situations but 99% of the time it creates absolute fucking trash.

Not terrible, but is hurt by Valve being way too conservative and afraid of making people sick. Continuous locomotion is too slow, to go fast you have to teleport/shift (which you can do even if you have it set to continuous). Level design is very good given the self-imposed limitations, but the way that jumping is done as a teleport sucks and makes traversal less interesting. I've only got the pistol and shotgun so far, apparently there's one more gun. The pistol feels like shit to use while the shotgun is pretty good.

Regarding the story, the G-man can't ever be explained: HL1 was always a lovecraftian story at heart. Horrible things are happening (xen invasion) and they hint at even greater horrible things (who the Nihilanth is running from). You don't know what's going on and you're being used. Any attempt to explain the setting fully would feel like a bad fanfic.

But more importantly,

Impressive for VR. It blows Boneworks out of the water in damn near every quality aside from freedom of movement; No smooth turn is a serious turn off. Intractable objects leaves a little to be desired, then again I'm still longing for the days when you could flip every lightswitch in Duke Nukem. Graphically nothing comes close to it; Not sure how optimization is since I'm on a 2070 and that's pretty overkill for the recommended specs, which should bode well.

Overall pretty damn good.

Gameplay is solid. It's definitely the VR Killer App that Boneworks was for the 3 months it was out. More than anything it does atmosphere well. Let me tell you nothing is scarier than 2-liter sized manhacks haphazardly flying in your direction. One serious letdown is the lack of dedicated melee weapon, or any melee from what I've played(Picked up iron bar and tried swinging at a headcrab zombie to no avail). Grabbity Gloves are so goddamn intuitive and fun to use, better than any force grab mechanic I've seen an other VR game. It's a mixed bag so far but overall I'm enjoying and hopefully immune from hl2 nostalgia, which it pulls a few times in settings and SFX(Thought hl2 was boring and largely contrived compared to hl1).

Smooth locomotion works, but it's very slow and teleporting is just faster unfortunately. Hopefully they'll add a run function, even if it's a H3VR-esque pantomime.

Also is this an alternative timeline or someshit, the fuck, if this is the main timeline why the fuck was G-Man in prison before Half Life 2 WHY DO WE SEE ELI DIE AND NOT GET SAVED BY THE END OF HALF LIFE 2 THEY COULD HAVE JUST MADE HER REVIVE HIM THEN LEAVE.

>it's the only way thay had to start writing themselves out of the corner

Firmly disagree.

The Half-Life series had a clear path forward to its ending (not Epistle 3), they just hadn't done the best job of communicating it in the games themselves (Half-Life 2 at one point late in development was going to have dialogue revealing this stuff, pic related, but the lines were cut from the final game). With Half-Life: Alyx they had the chance to go back and reveal the stakes for Half-Life 3 that the series thus far had been setting up in the background, but that kind of actual writing would require the writers to have actually paid attention to where the series they've taken over was going so instead they've just pulled out some timey wimey retcon stuff as a get out of writing free card.

This is one of those times where fan theories would have been better. Many fans back when the Orange Box came out, bringing Episode 2 and Portal at the same time, speculated that the Borealis carried teleportation or portal technology. The theorized plot of episode three was going to be Gordon and friends using the Borealis's technology to deliver a nuke to the Combine homeworld. Avenging Eli's death by doing such immense damage to the leaders of the Combine that it would either destroy the Combine or the Combine would give up on trying to take over Earth because Earth is more trouble than it's worth.

Here's what Source 2 does well:

>Much better texture streaming than Unreal Engine, I get a split-second of texture pop-in when I load from the main menu

>Really fucking good lighting

>The new Rubicon physics engine is everything you'd hope for from a successor to Source's physics

Here's what Source 2 doesn't do well:

>Still uses loading screens instead of level streaming (I assume this is only for VR games to keep the minimum spec in-line with budget VR machines)

Rubicon has two big bugs:

>Multiple times when I pulled an object out from underneath another, the object that was above it would hang in the air, unaffected by physics for a few seconds before physics started working again and it'd fall to the floor

>Less common than the first one, but I still had 2-3 times where I'd pick up an object and objects that were touching it would "stick" to it for a few seconds in a way that looks like it's a child of the held objects transform.

>>16888055

Fucking alternative timelime plot shit, just leave that to modders.

On the topic of G-man, if I remember correctly, Laidlaw said that the G-man belonged to another enslaved race by the combine, it just shows up as human to be familiar with the enviroment it is in.

I kind of imagine it is like a sleep paralysis demon/alien that can shapeshift/mentally control people and have the ability to shift themselves and other people from place to place. I guess the combine enslaved hundred of other species and civilizations, so the aliens who the G-man belongs to acts as agent saboteurs everywhere they go "hiring" anyone resourceful enough to chip away combine influence in controlled worlds.

Uhh, imagine G-Slug in Planet-X12 hiring Slug Freeman to bomb combine algae farms to cut off combine fishmen troops in the planet or some shit like that.

I've been reading Marc Laidlaw's novels and fiction as part of the research for my whole Half-Life project that I'd talked a bit about in another thread and it was neat to note in his novel The Thirty-Seventh Mandala how reminiscent its villains were of both the GMan and the player character in Half-Life (not Gordon, Barney, Adrian, Gina, Green or Alyx; the being who's possessing them) - when its villains are very much the type of being you're describing now.

I don't think this is true. Valve said in interviews that they have simulated arms to prevent physically impossible actions like closing a file cabinet with your hand in it, but first thing I did when I saw a file cabinet was try to do that and it worked fine.

>>16888369

Displaying a body without full body tracking can get very janky and for many use cases is worse than just having disembodied hands. The parts of your character model that aren't directly linked to a tracker on your body are very likely to be positioned differently from the corresponding parts of your actual body, which is awkward if you're trying to use the body for physics interactions.

How many of you have even played the game? Seems you all watched your favorite e-celeb play it and didn't like the story so it's shit 0/10.

The gameplay itself is honestly really impressive on a technical level. Just like the original Half Life, Alyx does it's absolute best to make sure everything in the game can be interacted with. The physics itself with objects in the game is top notch, the puzzles are very amusing to solve, etc. Watching someone play it is not even close to comparable with how immersive it actually is to play it in game.

Basically what I'm saying is it's immersive as all hell, solving puzzles, using the gravity gun and shooting enemies is very satisfying. I haven't finished it yet so I will take anons word on them dropping the ball with the story, but honestly I bought it for the game play and immersion so I don't care much about the story at this point. Half Life was never known for having an incredible story, people just love G-man and Gordon.

I still can't decide if it's a gimmick yet but I'm leaning towards gimmick, just like the majority of VR experiences, but I still recommend it for anyone that has VR because the first play through is a blast. Definitely not worth dropping all that money on VR just for this game though, not a system seller.

They just can't seem to get movement right in VR, it doesn't feel intuitive at all and it really fucks up the experience for all VR games including HL Alyx. Casuals are forced to teleport around because they are too weak and get motion sickness from normal movement, while the rest of us move around "normally" as slow as a snail because Valve is afraid to give us actual movement speed.

Once they stop being afraid and decide to go all in by going back to classic dual analog joystick for movement and camera, all VR games will be so much better. The new valve index controllers are perfect for that movement type. People bitch about motion sickness but if you just suck it up, take breaks and keep playing your body gets used to it in a matter of a couple of days. Basically, consumers bitching about motion sickness and devs not being willing to take that risk is holding back all VR games big time.

The attention to detail with the hat is nice but guns in VR in particular should always have it possible to check. Not because it would be nice to have but because it's something that would be immediately evident to anyone playing the game.

the only good use of time travel as a plot device is in comedies or sci-fi centred around around the idea.

you need to establish the rules by which time-travel works early on and be consistent.

introducing it late in a series is always because the franchise has "jumped the shark".

DBZ peaked in ratings/viewers right before Trunks was introduced. It was even worse in DBS.

After watching the ending, I'm even more annoyed by the use of time travel because it contradicts itself by design

>G-man says he needs to hire Alyx because Gordon is unruly

>Clear reference to Gordon post episode 1 retcon, where the Vortigaunts protect Gordon from him

>So, in this universe, the G-man either went back in time because he saw himself go back in time and hire Alyx/save Eli, thus the hire has no reason to happen beyond the fact that it happened

>Or he didn't see himself, and he skipped from the resonance cascade to HL2, got foiled by the Vortigaunts, went back to HL:A, hired Alyx, presumably deleted her memory of the encounter, went back into the future, and took her from there, in which case how does he know where to drop Gordon or travel back in time beyond plot powers.

I don't have VR so I was watching this game from a distance out of curiosity, but I have played enough VR games to know that melee combat is fun regardless of a lack of feedback. It's strange to me that Valve seemingly wanted to provide a "killer app" for VR, then half-assed it by not including things everyone would have expected like melee or the gravity gloves shooting objects, when they knew that the top thing missing from the VR market was "polished games." This was the one time you shouldn't have half-assed it.

It is a microcosm of the shift of the zeitgeist in this industry away from "idealist fantasy," that is wanting to play as a character who is better or cooler than yourself, to "representative fantasy," which is wanting to make literally every fucking game an allegory for the ills of society and ensuring that every character is representative of some kind of minority or ugly person.

Many people are judging this game based off of Youtube videos which is absurd. Watching a video of it is not even close to what it actually feels like to play the game in VR. Plus many people are pissed because they want a true HL3.

I just played it again for a few hours and it's honestly excellent. The best VR game I have played now. The only issue with it(and all VR games) is movement. Normies bitch about motion sickness and dev's aren't willing to take a risk so most games settle on that shit ass teleport movement which is awful and breaks immersion. HL Alyx and other games do have normal movement, but it's not nearly as good unless you have Valves new VR controller because they have analog sticks on them. It still works with my Vive controller but it's a bit clunky. The main issue is Alyx ""runs"" slow as fuck because the devs are so scared of people complaining about motion sickness.

To anyone that doesn't have VR, basically like 95% of people get motion sickness when they are playing a game and the character is moving while the player is standing still. That's why so many games use shit ass teleporting or real slow movement. The thing is anyone can easily get rid of the motion sickness if they just suck it up for like a single day. Play until you're feeling sick, take a 15 min break, play again, the body quickly adjusts. Normies ruining it for the rest of us. Just give us normal movement speed and 2 analog sticks on our VR controllers and we are set. Also stop charging 300$ for godam Valve VR controllers. I already dumped all this money on a Vive a year or 2 ago, I don't feel like paying hundreds more for a slightly better controller, but I want those damn joysticks. I can afford it, but it's a matter of principle, let us exchange old models or something, fucking greedy assholes.

>Closed caption data further confirms cut Crowbar weapon

>Close caption data confirms SMG had a grenade launcher upgrade at some point

This is still in the game though as the shotgun has a grenade launcher upgrade. So that just got swapped around. Although this means the SMG was probably at one point based on the HL2 SMG. AR probably cut and repurposed to an SMG so that Valve could avoid two-handed weapons.

He got on call with a group called Project Quarantine that doing non-VR mod work on Alyx. They claimed they were working on porting HL2 content and supposedly have Civil Protection officers working in Alyx. They finished the call by announcing they were going to make a Source 2, non-VR remake of Half-Life 2 using Alyx as a base? Really dumb idea but it's good to know that we can port HL2 content into the game and it'll work. And their work could potentially lead to learning a lot about modding the game.

Modding potential is looking really fucking great guys

This means that we could potentially port Source mods. I don't know about multiplayer mods but any single player Source games can absolutely be ported over with enough effort.

>Video files of early builds show that when Russell called you, it'd originally ring and you'd have to "tap" the headset Alyx wears to receive his call (Thank fucking christ this was removed)

>These references contain a November 2017 date so HL3 was being worked on at least as recently as 2017

>Chances are Valve stopped working on HL3 to work on Alyx, which makes sense given the ending of Alyx is what the beginning of HL3 would be (minus the retcon of course)

>Chances are also that Valve went right to work on HL3 when they finished Alyx

HL3 is pretty much confirmed to actually be coming this time.

>>16889599

Scripts suggest there's still support for that, however, Alyx is likely running on an incomplete version of Source 2 just like every other Valve game that's "running" on Source 2. Until the Source 2 SDK comes out. Assume you're playing on an incomplete version.

Got the screenshot of the fast headcrab. In the dark their leg tips glow a pinkish red. Also got a good shot of DOG and the cut Combine AR

>Cut tripmine entity with completed models (with scripts implying they were a usable weapon)

>Another Half-Life game, another reference to Combine Flamethrower

>Source 2 has built-in third person functionality that can be accessed via console

>There are audio files of the original Alyx VAs HLA lines

<Don't know much of the game she's recorded for but lines were played were from the first time you meet Russell and when you free the Vortiguant later in the game. So I assume most if not all.

>Using the fullbright console command reveals there's a dead Advisor at the bottom of Gman's prison chamber.

>There are props that would be out of the players sight in the Gordon scene, implying that this is just cut from HL3

So there's your explanation of how the Combine caught the Gman, they had to sacrifice an Advisor to capture him.

>There are incomplete SFM files in the game of the Seven Hour War showing Striders laying siege to a city of error models and untextured humans

>There are animations for the Snark that show it was supposed to be usable as a weapon in Alyx (and there are console commands that suggest the Snark was going to be a weapon attachment in some way)

>Model names imply there were collectibles in the game at one point

>Model names for props containing "Eli Manor" imply that a location was going to be Eli Vance's manor

<Likely means that the scene where Alyx and Eli get arrested was going to take place in that manor and was going to have an entire level dedicated to it

>Model name implies there was a flechette upgrade for the pistol

>Model name implies there was an energy ball upgrade for the SMG

>Through console commands, you can shoot a blue goo from the SMG that bullets home in on. This effect is strong enough to round corners

>You can spawn the energy ball in-game with a console command and it functions just as it did in HL2 but without models or effects

At this rate we're also going to get a restored content mod

First playthrough took 10 hours on normal to take in muh story. Second one took 5 on hard because you can teleport bullshit your way past most set pieces. Overall I'd rate the game a 7/10 with 8/10 if you consider the future implications for VR with possible source 2 mods on the way. Mechanically it's outdated by a year or two but presentation is next gen.

Money is that HL3 will be a regular PC game. They will want the modding scene so they can poach their next CS/Portal game.

Alyx will continue as their VR series. Where they don't need to deliver full games, just 10 hour glorified fanfiction. And they won't need the crowbar, or melee.

Okay but their play testers are fucking weak. Apparently some of their testers were too scared of the distillery sequence to complete it and feedback from playtesters is why there's no crowbar in the game.

The reason why there's no melee or two handed weapons I can almost guarantee is because their internal playtesters are fucking babies. Hopefully Valve decides with whatever VR Half-Life sequel that they're working on that players can handle two handed weapons and swinging a crowbar around.

Alyx is diversity checkbox, stonk womyn personified, all while fighting fascist oppressors. Where at every stage, she becomes more and more Mary Sue. And I mean original Mary Sue, as in the Star Trek story. That gets worse with the two episodes. And now is fully complete with working for G-Man.

Say proto, because it wasn't complete shite. Or felt like forced agitprop. Or shitting on what little cohesion that kept the story going, like the new time travel retcon.

Jesus Christ focus group testing is the worst fucking thing known to man. I don't understand how you could base all your decision making off of some small localized sample size you decided to randomly take. It's even worse than basing all your design choices off of market statistics, because at least there the sample size is much larger and you get an idea of how many people of a certain disposition are represented. I have to wonder how they get selected for this as well. I remember I actually qualified for a Bethesda focus group test once (this was years ago) but their hours were completely nonsensical to anyone who had a weekday job and I wasn't going to take off just to attend. I had to sign up on their website and they emailed me, but I have to wonder if the people some companies use for these tests even do that.

Why? Because you are on /v/? Gman has already been known to literally manipulate dimensions like it was nothing for mysterious intergalactic shenanigans. Hell he already did time travel with Gordon by teleporting him into key mainline story points. The Gman fucking with Alyx in return of something as petty as Eli's life was probably a nod to O.G. fans who wanted Eli to live 13 years ago, nothing more. People are right this game did NOT advance the main plotline but at the same time it totally feels like that's the point. Games you play as Gordon hold the train ride to the main story line. Alyx games are just the railroad switches.

>>16890106

Melee was probably cut because they were afraid people would punch their walls, just as they were afraid of motion sickness. I've been watching videos on the game and the enemies appear to be really slow so it's easy to aim at them. Headcrabs and manhacks are huge so they're larger targets. Really casual, altogether.

>Alyx is diversity checkbox

Only because of her association to Eli. Who was a generic black scientist NPC in Half-Life 1 and was only made a character because Valve decided that the first two generic scientists you meet after the resonance cascade should be made into named characters. Which since Eli was just a generic recycled NPC, I struggle to even call him a diversity checkbox.

>stonk womyn personified

Yeah, wasn't it so strong when her only value to the plot was her multitool? Or how about when she got stabbed by a Hunter and her being critically injured made a window for the Gman to reach Gordon because the vortigaunts couldn't protect Gordon while healing her? Or how about all the times in Half-Life 2 where she's literally doing nothing? Oh, but it was so strong when she saved an unarmed, unarmored Gordon from being gangbanged by CPs, right? Y'know, the CPs that she and the resistance had been fighting for almost a decade before Gordon showed up?

>at every stage, she becomes more and more Mary Sue. That gets worse with the two episodes

Have you played Half-Life 2 recently? She becomes more useless as those games progress. She spends a third of Episode 2 in a coma.

>And now is fully complete with working for G-Man

That's not a sign of being a Mary Sue. Being an indentured servant of the Gman is anti-Mary Sue because if Alyx were truly a Mary Sue, she'd be able to break free of the Gman on her own or never get captured in the first place. Working for the Gman is the lose condition, not the win condition.

I tried deliberately emptying my ammo. If you have low ammo or health, the game spawns magazines and health injectors on humanoid enemies that you can steal using the gravity gloves. So you can't finish an encounter if you run out of ammo during, but if you have no ammo and go into a new encounter, enemies will be carrying more supplies than they normally would.

In the most basic terms possible, from what little I've read: It's sort of like Darwinist government. Everyone is supposed to do what they are most suited for. It's still a command economy, but where Communism seeks to give everyone an equal payout, Fascism eschews equality as a virtue and instead, ideally, does what is supposed to be objectively best for the nation. Not a proponent or anything, I just think it's good to know what the fuck words actually mean if you're going to talk about them.

> It's still a command economy

It's not as centrally planned like in communism, the difference is that if a private business gets a brilliant idea like moving factories to china for bigger profit margins and not as a colonization effort, they get a phonecall or a visit from the government "you better think that through bubbo", where he's reminded that he's supposed to work for the common good of the people.

So certain business like usury or pornography are also unwelcome.

So the state shapes society according to its purpose, stewards or regulates it accordingly, and all its citizens are expected to work for the common good which the state defines? Forgive me, but how is fascism different from any dictatorship?

It's more specific on the economics and has a "vision" or goal in mind, an ideal if you want. A dictatorship can result when any asshole takes over a nation and rules over it with an iron fist, for any reason. As the other guy said, "real" Fascism doesn't really exist anymore and is a boogeyman used to scare normalfags. Also, Fascism is more-or-less a reaction to Communism because Mussolini realized that Marxism is bullshit when WW1 happened and workers all over the world didn't take their golden opportunity to revolt, so he realized that people don't give a shit about "class" and came up with something that he thought would be better

You don’t get the force feedback from that sort of thing. I think it’s just inherent in VR that we aren’t in the sci-fi future exoskeleton level of VR where every bit of our sensory input and output can be manipulated. So it’s not a strength of VR systems now, so we decided not to lean into it for that reason.”

They already figured out this problem. I'm fairly certain that when you set up Index, it asks you to choose a "VR space" so that it will warn you when you get close to the edge and you don't run into or hit walls or objects. I guess it might be tied to the individual game, but I thought it was bundled with the headset itself. Regardless, it's a solution that's already been implemented. Someone at Valve was extremely fucking scared of pushing the genre forward I guess.

I'd say it's highly out of character. It's far less mysterious, he's speaking like an almost perfectly normal (and more poorly written!) human, and the cop-out isn't the same at all.

In HL1 it was still a bit of a cop-out, but it's at least still preserving a shit-ton of what was there and introduced new and interesting conflict. Meanwhile in this it's just seemingly pure "we don't wanna make a game where eli died", and it's ruining so much shit. Like what's with the time travel? How could the Gman have gotten captured if he can literally time travel and see future events? Etc.

Eli doing something that benefits the G-man then immediately dying would maybe salvage this shitpile, would explain why G-man had Alyx send him a message in EP2 even though he was going to die anyways.

But we all know that won't happen, what will happen instead is Gordon undoing the resonance cascade through time travel.

>Grimly, Alyx and I armed the Borealis, creating a time-travelling missile, and steered it for the heart of the Combine's command center.

>At this point, as you will no doubt be unsurprised to hear, a Certain Sinister Figure appeared, in the form of that sneering trickster, G-Man. For once he appeared not to me, but to Alyx Vance. Alyx had not seen the cryptical schoolmaster since childhood, but she recognized him, instantly. "Come along with me now, we've places to be and things to do," said G-Man, and Alyx acquiesced. She followed the strange grey man out of the Borealis, out of our reality. For me, there was no convenient door held open; only a snicker and a sideways glance. I was left alone, riding the weaponized research vessel into the heart of a Combine world. An immense light blazed. I caught a cosmic view of a brilliantly glittering Dyson sphere. The vastness of the Combine's power, the futility of our struggle, blossomed briefly in my awareness. I saw everything. Mainly I saw how the Borealis, our most powerful weapon, would register as less than a fizzling matchhead as it blew itself apart. And what remained of me would be even less than that.

I wonder how Alyx changes things, honestly at this stage, no change would be the most surprising decision.

Played both Boneworks and Half-Life Alyx. Finished Boneworks twice and I am on my second playthrough of Half-Life Alyx. I must say Boneworks definitely did the basic VR gameplay and interaction design much better. Note that I said design. There are some flaws in the implementation. Half-Life Alyx then does the implementation very well. As in everything feels very polished and intuitive but it really sucks you can't melee any enemies, climb any obstacles and are forced to move at a snail pace when using sliding movement. I enjoyed my first playthrough of Half-Life Alyx way more than my first playthrough of Boneworks and I enjoyed my second playthrough of Boneworks more than I am enjoying my second playthrough of Half-Life Alyx.
