Currently downloading the ToM demo, seems it was released just a few hours ago on PS4, Switch and Steam. Hopefully Square didn't fuck this one up like FF7.

Looks neat but I don't know if the demo comes with Denuvo or not.

And honestly the Secret of Mana remake didn't impress at all. It's just fancier graphics that I wasn't a fan of and a terrible remake soundtrack that I opted to use the original over.

Watching gameplay of it, here's what I've caught onto so far:

>Music is as solid as the trailers implied. No butchered tracks as far as I can see.

>The abundance of QoL improvements is a huge plus

>Items actually showing up in the world is nice

<Even if they seem to be ridiculously abundant

>Graphics are fine for what they are, definitely not as ambitious as the SNES version for its time though

<English Voice acting is still iffy, at least it can be changed to Jap

>UI in action isn't as bad as I thought it would be

Pretty pleased overall. Will probably end up getting at some point in time.

I’ll play the demo later tonight. Regardless of how it makes me feel, I’m still pirating the release just in case the Ethics Committee somehow got their claws in the full game anyway.

I'm this anon. I'm playing the PC version with Japanese voices turned on. I started a Charlotte play through to see if Death Jester backhanding Charlotte is still censored like it is in that one preview video on the Twitter page for the English release. There is no censorship, thank God. It gives me a faint hope that the rest of the game will have plenty of half-bare anime tiddies (Pic related - These costumes are, supposedly, for a new tier of job class for new post-game content.)

But I have a hunch the official localization will still turn out to be sub par. For example, Charlotte clearly calls Death Jester an "idiot" in Japanese, but the English texts omits this. I've heard the English text also tones down Hawkeye's flirty attitude towards women. I think this is more of a sloppy translation than intentional censorship. Either way, I'm hoping the PC version will eventually get a re-translation patch. Other than that, my feelings are the same as >>16881966. I'm pleased with what I'm seeing so far, and I'll play through the demo multiple times. I'm still pirating the release first, but if the censorship turns out to be nothing I may end up buying it.

Major performance changes on the Switch demo are 30fps, lower texture quality, texture pop-in during cutscenes, and some aliasing.

Personally, I don't know why they default Run to pressing the L stick. That and the persistent modern game adage of plastering the objective onscreen all the time.

They're aiming this one at the "little market" of people who like unreleased Japanese games as well as fanservice. Essentially, they think it'll slide under the radar, so they're making their appeal in that market as broad as possible. FF7R is aimed at the "big market" of FF7 fans and new gamers who are supposed to like things like desexualized women. They know that game will be picked to pieces and get all the attention, so they'll be able to point out how they made all the correct noises and motions. In other words, they're trying to have their cake and eat it while talking out of both sides of their mouth.

Eh, doesn't look like it. The preorder bonuses are a wallpaper set for the Steam version, an avatar set for the PS4 version, and all versions have an in-game accessory that boosts EXP gain up to level 10. But, going by the demo, EXP gain is already really fast for the early levels, so I don't know why that accessory exists.

Yeah but I don't think that's relevant in the scope of this demo. You could change your class two times and depending on the combination of which branches you chose, you end up with a different class in the end.

It's interesting that we've moved into this era where many gamers are hesitant to actually play a game without a bunch of knowledge beforehand out of some vague fear of "screwing" themselves. I wonder if developers are nowadays cognizant of that trend and trying to adjust mechanics around it–not just that it's possible that much of the details of the game will be made available, but that a lot of people will want that information up front rather than discovering it as a part of playing the game. In an older game like this one it would naturally not be a consideration unless the manual out and out listed exactly what each class would get, although this is a remake so the devs know that all the information about the previous game is available.

It's a question really beyond the scope of this thread, but it's something I wonder about every time I read a gamer in fear of not playing optimally. I'm guilty of it myself, I admit, because I don't like the idea of the potential of being unable to progress because I've made choices that aren't viable in the long term. I believe that on standard difficulty a game shouldn't have choice combinations that are poor enough to prevent you from finishing the game UNLESS it's the type of game where building your character is an important and fundamental part of the gameplay. Like, in Tome or Dark Souls it's perfectly reasonable for bad builds to exist–partially because there are just so many combinations that balancing them all would be too much work–but in a game like this one where there are only a few binary choices to make there really shouldn't be any that are so outright bad that the game isn't able to be finished. At the least, a player of ordinary RPG skill should be able to decide from information provided in the game or its manual that a certain combination of classes will not work out, and should be able to do so without a lot of trial-and-error. I don't expect the developers to protect the player from outright stupidity–I'm not saying that, like, FF7 needs to be balanced to be beatable without using materia because some player might decide they don't like the idea–but a first-time player of a game like this one really ought to be able to go into it without worrying ahead of time if they're going to be shooting themselves in the foot.

Then again, there're almost always things in sufficiently large games that players will wish they had known when they started the game or that they would want a first-time player to know just so they don't miss out on it. Everyone has an example of this: don't buy sword X in town Y because in the next dungeon you get one for free; be sure you explore all of floor Z of some dungeon otherwise you'll miss the thing that lets you get the good ending. That's kind of a fundamental problem with exploration and RPG video games that drives people towards wanting to know all this stuff ahead of time. I guess it's a balancing act, and players themselves have to decide how much spoiling would actually make the game less fun for them personally.

Maybe that is because they see other people who have played the game autistically talk about minmaxing its mechanics and think that's more important to play the game than it actually is.

It's overthinking that's just not necessary when playing a game for the first time, and it spoils a lot of the fun. I would just dive right into a game and focus on just playing it, I wouldn't want to focus on the maths of the games mechanics or anything. Optimization is something for subsequent playthroughs, it adds replay value, you can use your knowledge from previous playthroughs or, if you are lazy or forgetful, use the knowledge found on the internet.

The original game had permanent class changes, yes. But as I understand it going off of the Playstation Underground video release some days ago, you can revert class changes in the remake. Ditto for stat training. There's seems to be a good share of items that end up being gone forever going off of the demo, but nothing terribly significant.

I agree. If there's one thing I have to knock the demo for, is that it's easier than the SNES version, even on Hard Mode. It may just be the early game, but enemies don't feel aggressive enough for the new pacing of combat. I never used a single recovery item on Hard Mode, especially with those new recovery pots on the field. The dodge roll is also spammable and I didn't take any damage from the Fullmetal Hugger fight because of it. It may be that there will have to be a self-imposed ban on dodge rolling to up the game's difficulty.

And that's saying something since the vanilla snes version is pretty easy already (and kevin just breaks the game in pieces). I'm really hoping they scale up the difficulty and remove those healing pots, or at least reduce their number. There was a "very easy" difficulty in there so maybe very hard will be unlockable?

At least with the SNES version, there were some reasonably hard parts, particularly before you figured out what bosses had super counters. Even Full Metal Hugger wasn't exactly a pushover depending on your comp. Last playthrough I did I used Angela-Kevin-Charlotte It was co-op so I only got to pick the second of those, and I'm pretty sure we ended up going through almost all of our healing items.

Meanwhile, as already pointed out, FMH's attacks are all super easy to avoid completely in the remake. Hopefully Black Rabite is actually hard

Gee, lets see.

>Overall combat

The gameplay style of the party games is that you can switch between three party members on the fly. Not only that, but you now have SP, skill points(basically mana) that you can consume to use skills. The gameplay loop is now wait on charge attack, get SP, spam skill, repeat. Why is this a problem? Because Skills also level up per use(1 exp per use, and they require like a hundred or a thousand use PER LEVEL) and intially it seems like they want you to combo skills but by the midpoint of the game you just spam the one that deals the most amount of damage, especially since by the end of the games the skills become final fantasy tier "stopping the game for an animation".

The game also adds two mechanics that I believe to be the utter worst shit to ever grace the Ys games, which is a dedicated dodge button, and Just/Perfect Guard. The dodge button replaces the jump button(Even in Ys8 where there is jumping again, because it's only used for platforming and not combat) and makes your movement pointless because you can reposition near instantly with a dodge. But it's not like you'd want to reposition since you can spam just guard, a very easy to pull off guard that

>Negates ALL damage

>Is resourceless and can be spammed to hell and back

>Gives you a 100% critical attack buff for a short period

meaning that every fight and bossfight is an exercise of standing in front of the fucking enemy, wailing on them, then just guarding because everyone's a health sponge now and you need that critical damage buff to finish the games before the decade passes. After Ys Seven this went double with just dodging, an equally easy dodge on attack buff that slows down enemies and speeds you up considerably. And the icing on the cake is that both flash dodge and flash guard can be used simultaneously.

The drawback? Enemies are health sponges out the ass, especially on Nightmare. They can also in Memories of Celceta oneshot the everloving shit out of you, and because the AI is garbage in that game you'll switch to the next character who is on 1 hp.

The fact that you're playing with three characters is ass anyways, because they all have individual skills to be leveled up individually, weapons, armor(I should add that armor does not display on your character model, so if you have the super late game armors Adol still looks like a leather fashion model twink), etc. In addition, in certain bossfights against human enemies this makes for a headache because you can't see the fucking boss over all the visual effects and yelling. There's also the fact that despite range and speed differences the only character you'll want to be using is Adol since he ends up as the strongest anyways, with the exception of the rock-paper-scissors damage types every character deals. Not that it matters nearly every boss, across Ys Seven, MoC and 8 fit into the same mold of

>Swipe attack

>Swipe attack 2

>Area of Effect Attack

>Delayed attack where you can't reach the boss

And since you can counter all of that with Flash Guard/Dodge nothing feels earned. And now for the bullshit of each individual game

>Seven

>Go to five areas, getting five new party members and exploration abilities

>Nearly 7 hours later the halfway point of the game is finished and you have to go back to these five areas again, going into secret areas of them, without unlocking any new abilities or members or mechanics or anything.

>But you get elemental stones that you need for each party member's ultimate weapons

>But you also need lunar stones or fuckyou stones for these weapons

>Each weapon needs a metric assload of stones

>Stones drop very slowly and are a bitch to farm even on an emulator and a speedup button

>Final boss is a three stage affair

>Every stage has you fighting with three different party members, with the final stage having solely Adol

>There are seven party members in the game, Adol being a permanent one, and you can only use three at a time. And two of which have Adol's standard damage type. And adol can use different swords that let him spec into the other damage types, which he will because you gain skills by using different swords

>So good fucking luck if you end up with three useless shit tier members against the final boss, better quit out and grind nigger!

I liked the remix of The Strongest Foe though.

>Memories of Celceta

The absolute worst shit fucking garbage trash and it's a remake of the best bump combat game, Dawn of Ys.

>The damage sponge/one shot really shines here, especially when nearly every area has a large enemy type that barely takes a quarter of their health bar with your ultimate attacks(I forget the name. EXTRA?) and can outright oneshot you, but that's every enemy anyways

>Music is utter trash outside of Ancient Land, especially the ONE dungeon track that the game has

>Has the stupidest fast travel system I've ever seen with. You can only warp to stones of the same color AND shape from your current warp stone. So the fast travel needs a bunch of hoops to go through before you can get where you need to go

>Every character besides Duran is ass. Karna plays like shit, Freida plays like shit(She's pretty cute though), the kid with the mace plays like fuck especially since the first time you get to play her is during the tower section and I forget who else is a character. There are also trash underwater sections.

I've never finished the game because it's utter shite.

>8

I actually like this one, mainly because the PC version adds an extra dungeon that you go through during the story, where you play as Dana. But instead of party members you get different forms which have different damage, defense, speed, etc and they all share the same skills but perform variations of it. So the shot move is a big shockwave with the hammer earth form, but a laser in the fast dual dagger fire form. The dungeon is very well made with puzzles requiring your forms, very challenging bosses with quick movements and attack patterns and a loli that turns into a dragon. I wish the entire game was like that section but it isn't. Otherwise it's a neat story for a JRPG, you're shipwrecked(of course) and you have to band together with the survivors. Of course it turns into saving the world eventually but it's neat checking out the ruins of the world. Olga's pretty hot and I'm not even a giantess fag.

Really all falcom needs to do is copy the Dana dungeon into its own game and they're set. But they won't because fuck them.

I don't usually do it, but that changed with the re-release of Romancing Saga 2.

That games needs a manual. None is provided. The in-game help you get from NPCs explain maybe 5% of the game's systems and items. A lot of these remakes and rereleases completely omit the fact that there's no fucking manual anymore, and throw the player in with a bunch of unexplained systems and items. I don't want to have to read a FAQ to figure out how leveling up or battle formations fucking work.

I am not saying bring back tutorials, I'm saying just include a digital manual in the game on the title screen or something. Hell, the Wii U had some fantastic manuals for the VC games because Nintendo knew the old shit was obtuse without them, but then they released NES games on Switch with fucking nothing.

>It's interesting that we've moved into this era where many gamers are hesitant to actually play a game without a bunch of knowledge beforehand out of some vague fear of "screwing" themselves.

When you have a wide variety of options for games to play, you're much less likely to want to replay certain kinds of games. It used to be people didn't have as many options, and so they'd do things like replay a 40 hour JRPG to see if they missed anything. Lots of people, myself included, don't want to replay a 40 hour JRPG to make one or two slightly different choices that would get the good ending. Especially not when finding the optimal way to play a lot of these games isn't that hard, so the game is 90% the same on a second run.

Back in the day, both. SNES emulators have done netplay over a decade ago. At the time, we used ZSNES v1.36, because it had simple netplay built in. We played almost all of the SNES co-op RPGs through it. Nowadays, we have to play online, since everyone moved to different cities.

Though in the remake I predict getting MP restoring skills as soon as possible will be critical for any caster build, because MP runs out very quickly in the early game.

If you play the ROM instead, also get the Sin of Mana balance hack. It fixes a lot of bugs.

In the original game, buying armor is a must since it's more of a real-time RPG than an action game. Enemies start using spells and fullscreen attacks around halfway through the game, iirc.

In this remake, it all depends on how they've handled enemy spellcasting and such. The only boss in the demo, Full Metal Hugger, has no unavoidable attacks. There are not spellcasting enemies up to the end of the demo, either, and everything is pretty telegraphed.

That said, the remake showers you in items, so there's pretty much nothing to spend lucre on other than new weapons and armor.

You have to start as Angela and not leave the tutorial area, but there is a golden save point in the area. The game ought to be easy enough already, but blasting through everything with enough mid-to-late game consumables to last the entire game sounds like a fun idea for the first playthrough.

>and also if equipment will have some different stats/abilities other than just being straight atk/def upgrades.

It's possible to get three different accessories in the demo through item seeds. Judging by them and data mining showing on-equip effects, my guess is only accessories have different abilities through different status immunities or elemental damage reduction. Therefore all other equipment slots are a linear upgrade.

Every other additional effect in the game comes from the new Ability system. According to data mining, there's 386 different Abilities between all classes in the game spread out over passive stat upgrades, additional effects to attacks/spells/defense, and higher levels of the two previous categories. Examples of additional effects include a chance on Power Attack to poison the enemy, HP recovery after winning a battle, automatic debuffs at the start of a battle, and so on. Every character starts the game with two Ability slots and unlocks two more with every class upgrade for a total of 6 Ability slots by the end game.

Here's a pastebin with every Ability in the game. Though it's not sorted by character and class.

Probably because they feel it adds "charm" or whatever, or maybe just want to make the character/game their own. That's assuming it's not just profit related in that extra work the editor can say needs doing is more profit being squeezed out for them/their team. And sadly while companies may include dual audio, they often don't have a separate English script for each, since as I hear it, that would require a second ESRB/PEGI rating fee.

Question is, will most western Mana fans defend such a choice with the character, the way a rather vocal portion of the west's Dragon Quest fans do for the localization induced accents?
