901929  No.16866129[Last 50 Posts]

I could have sworn there was one up already. Anyone get back into the game now that the patch/expansion is out?

>play for a while

>bugs come tunneling into my world

>pft, my guys are all geared up by now, I can take 'em

<I couldn't take 'em

On the bright side I only lost one guy since I had just got two recruits that stayed out of combat and were able to rescue everyone. I wouldn't have lost even the one guy except he collapsed before reaching the hospital and I didn't notice until he had less than an hour left to live.

I sometimes play but the more I play the more I realize that even when modded to the point of breaking the entire game is such a disappointment.

>No hydraulic engineering, at all, ever, for any reason

>Maps make no sense and are just thrown together with no consideration for how things actually grow or the effects of landscape on the same

>An oak that's been growing for god knows how many centuries before your colony came along is the same size as a tree that matured in a year and drops the same amount of wood and of the same quality

>Farming is incredibly half-assed - no seed-saving or exchanges (how the fuck does research magically unlock crops like that?), no special grow conditions, no transplanting, no crop rotation, no planting considerations, no tunnels or greenhouses, no breeding, etc.

>Defense is either vague, slow and frustrating (vanilla) or autistic micro (modded) with a heap of bullshit on top either way and ALWAYS becomes boring as shit eventually because of the lack of Z-levels, vehicles, terrain and basically any enemy attack plan that isn't either "run directly at your base", "mortar your base" or "drop pods"

>Lack of Z-levels completely hobbles every game mechanic from [the lack of] hydraulic engineering to defense to social interactions and back again

>Tech trees are beyond retarded, especially the fact that you can go from living in a hut to building flatscreen TVs to building starships inside of a year if your research gimp sits at their desk enough. On that same note, How the FUCK can you build a starship without figuring out heavier-than-air flight, much less land vehicles? I'm not about to ride a fucking pack animal and eat pemmican for two weeks when an aircraft can get me to my destination in two hours

>Storage and item management is a head-scratcher as well; two shirts take up the same amount of storage space as an entire dresser

>People don't give a shit about what they eat; you can spend five years eating nothing except rice and nobody will complain.

>There is no aesthetic distinction whatsoever between colonists unless you have an ascetic present; everyone likes exactly the same kind of art and decoration and whatever and has aneurysms over anyone tracking in dirt despite the fact that nobody apparently knows how to wipe their feet

>Even with a dozen people running around there's no designated leader or administrative body

>I can build power armor, FTL drives and glitterworld medicine but apparently insecticide remains a mystery

>No fishing, boats or aquatic resources or foodstuffs of any kind.

The fucking list just goes on and on. I have it installed so I jump in every now and again but I get frustrated when I have ideas that I can't do and quit out of boredom.

You're not wrong. Every sandbox style game will have limits though, and I appreciate Rimworld for what it does and is, which is basically a single z level DF with a UI and graphics with a sci-fi aesthetic. I hadn't thought about flight much before your post, it's disappointing there hasn't ever been a decent mod to mimic that, or land travel/war vehicles.

I'm curious now with your limitations on suspension of disbelief what games work for you? People have told me my own requirements for a world to work on its own rules are too strict and I'd like to know what someone with even stricter requirements plays.

>I'm curious now with your limitations on suspension of disbelief what games work for you?

I haven't found anything that really scratches the colony-building itch, unfortunately. It's not about suspension of disbelief, it's about not really being able to manage a damn thing - no utilities, no water, no landscaping, gaping blind spots in your technology, the combat is ass and the closest you come to actual planning is idly wondering whether you have enough cotton and rice to stay clothed and fed through the winter. The nearest thing to a diplomacy mechanic or a system of sub-goals is petty requests from the other faggots on your planet and visitors being impressed that your dinner table is made of marble.

>People have told me my own requirements for a world to work on its own rules are too strict and I'd like to know what someone with even stricter requirements plays.

Literal autism aside, the reason I don't really enjoy Rimworld that much is because I was after what it says on the tin but the game doesn't deliver - I expect a """colony sim""" to actually deliver somewhat on the "sim" aspect and Rimworld fails miserably in that regard. I'm not expecting a complete simulation or anything but it doesn't even compare to Dorf Fort and DF is a sim only in the loosest sense of the word.

>>16866802

Mining isn't the only thing that Z-levels are good for. Maybe I want to build my base into the side of a mountain for the sake of defense and have a series of terraced greenhouses for farming. Maybe I want to cut the top of the mountain off and build my ship there so raider niggers can't get to it. Maybe I want my settlement to be an ewok village up in the trees. Maybe I just want to be able to make a really, really tall wall around my settlement.

Turns out it kinda was a big deal, because that was one of my doctors and shortly after some raiders with grenades came along and blew my other doctor's arm off (along with multiple other colonist limbs). It is more playable but less complex. Your population is a lot smaller so you get more attached to individual colonists. You start with 1, 3, or 5 depending on your starting conditions, and you get more mainly from capturing injured attackers and convincing them to join. Also you can send out your own trading caravans rather than just wait for them to come to you (dunno if they added that to DF yet).

The biggest difference is that DF pretty much plays itself once you hit a certain threshold, whereas Rimworld tries to throw a major crisis at you whenever it detects you're getting too comfortable. Rimworld is also a lot more micro-oriented, and has an actual win condition.

Not really.Gets me in the mood to fap to doujins and thats it. Sims 3 with the woohooer mod is more up your alley for fapping.

The fun from RJW comes from how well it plays with the game mechanics and more ways to use your prisoners is not a bad thing. You can attach a cyberdick to your female pawns to turn into futas.

I remember one time after a raid a caravan came for a visit and there was a downed female raider my colony didn't clean up, the poor raider girl was instantly rushed by the entire caravan group including the pack animals from across the map just to tag-team rape her. There was so much cum on the floor

It was wild and magical.

Never got to trade with the caravan though

If you have a low amount of pawns it's sometimes worth taking on dead weight to use as haulers/cleaners. I usually class pawns by their skills and background. If they have a useful skill I need like a grower, and not incapable of hauling or cleaning I usually try to recruit them.

If you have at least a minimum of 5 or so pawns you can banish or arrest and let the shitty ones escape.

And Borderlands 3 is labeled as a looter shooter, but when I pirated it, all I got was a "loading-screen cringe sim".

I went into the game expecting an experience of that general description and didn't get it.

Sarcasm aside: catch-all terms like "roguelike" and "colony-sim" are good to get a general idea of what you DO in the game, not what the game itself does.

The Anno series could be labeled as a "strategic colony simulator". You could also apply the same labels to the Tropico series.

This happens because the mechanism available for the player to interact with the gameworld are very similar:

>place buildings

>prioritize resources

>establish trade routes

And yet, if you went into a Tropico game expecting a Caribean themed Anno, you'd be quite disapointed. Or if you wanted to play a mustche twirling dictator in the phillipines, Anno would not be very good at it.

tl,dr: You're the kind of person a marketing department loves because you make their job easier.

One thing I usually do is put my "Brewing" room in the middle of the living quarters.

You need heaters and coolers to keep the temperature stable on that anyway, and you can use that to pass the stable temperature air into their rooms.

Works best if you further isolate the rooms.

Meaning airlocks (take longer to enter and exit, but they only do it twice a day) or put it inside a big building, so the heat transfers to adjacent rooms, not the outside.

Or you double-wall the whole thing.

You could also point to FPS as a genre, where it doesn't really describe much, Thief and DOOM are both FPS and that doesn't mean anything as far as an hard definition of them goes.

Rimworld can very well describe itself as "a sci-fi colony sim" and it's not wrong, because that's an accurate description of the gameplay, it's just not the whole deal.

I actually like the dev's idea about failure not being the end of the game and instead have consequences that you have to deal with. Management games that work in a more classical aproach end up being some autistic nightmare where you try to perfect your meta as much as possible and any failure is solved with a reset, learning from your mistakes to do perfect runs in the future. It's nothing but endless trial and error until you understand the game mechanics enough to make sure you never lose and the game is built around this since losing means the end of the game.

Reminds me of some RPG threads where people were talking about how neat it'd be if the story could continue even if the hero fails, you just get a different story about how everything is going to shit.

I think Chrono Trigger was one of the few games that even included an alternative ending like that.

Needless griping for a game that isn't there aside, anybody ever tried roleplaying in this game? It's actually fucking amazing when you slap mods atop the game for that as well, but even vanilla works fine for that.

I like to make my coworkers and various people I know in general through the prepare carefully mod, and I unironically have the most amazing playthroughs that easily make this game 11/10. The game succeeds in what's only mentioned in the about section, which is being a story generator. If you try to play it like it's Age of Empires, you're going to have a bad time and that's nobody's fault but you and your expectations.

Gonna update you on current playthrough with coworkers if anybody's interested, keep thread alive, game's incredible.

I'm aware that the term "sim" has considerable breadth even with further qualification; my gripe is that Rimworld's "sim" elements are like duplo blocks while the term is generally understood to mean something on the level of "erector set". I don't expect something like Anno or SimCity from a game where ~12 NPCs is considered a large settlement, but given that it's advertised as a sim I DO expect to have at least some simulationist elements. There is no excuse for how brain-dead basic elements like farming, defense, infrastructure management and base construction are in a game that supposedly revolves around those things.

Rimworld is my most played game on steam, but I'm waiting for the price drop because $20 for an expansion that's basically equivalent to just a few mods isn't worth it. But upon sale I'll jump back in, hopefully everything will be patched and fixed and updated by then.

>the term is generally understood to mean [X]

Now that's an expression I've heard hundreds of times. Not just for vidya too.

"Generally understood" usually translates to "I've heard it like this".

Is the Sims a simulation game? Yes it is. Extremly shallow, but it is.

Is Rimworld a simulation game? Yes it is.

It simulates mood, health and a basic economy to go with those two, and that's all it needs to. Could it have more? No argument there: there's a truckload of things you could expand on. But if you start placing greater focus on the economical simulation, the social simulation loses focus aswell. And that side of the game is the one thing that sets it apart from other games in the same genre. It might also be the main reason people pick it up to play.

finally recruited those two prisoners

Veronica is the ugly psycho pyro jailbird who fell out of the sky. Multiple prison break attempts, and her obviously superior fighting ability, resulted in her right leg blown off by a shitty shotgun. Her time in prison was spent smacking down a naked old woman who constantly went mad from not having booze. Veronica's first job was to tame a sizeable herd of muffalo, leaving her a bloody, bruised, broken, bitten wailing mess on the horizon. Being armed with the same shitty shotgun that blew her leg off didn't help. The other colonists survived the maddened herd, in large thanks to the peculiar self-tamed Megasloth slashing and biting out their necks and bodies. After much time healing up back in her former prison, Veronica tamed several animals with rather questionable methods. Everyone seems to hate her.

Ibis, former tribal raider, was a useless naked granny always having a mood until she finally got over her alcohol addiction and became top marksman. I'll have her hunt everything I won't tame, but at the rate she's stacking corpses I'll need a bigger freezer soon.

Need mod sugestion: I was quite happy when I first played this game some years ago and all animals were reasonably alien, while drawing inspiration from normal animals. They also served unique functions.

>Boomalopes and boom rats -> Neutramine production

>Muffallos -> textile

>warg -> Predators

Yes, wargs are LotR, but still alien enough for the setting.

It kinda disapointed me when the rest is normal "chickens" and "Rhinocerous".

IS there mod that at least removes this sort of "vannilla" animals? Not looking to add more, unless they're reasonably alien aswell and complement the setting.

They're meant more like Puzzles than actual fights.

What used to happen:

>giant can of soda falls on your backyard

>starts spilling nasty shit

>if you attack it, bugs come out

Right now, those quests will deploy a full base of nasties that works like a dungeon: you'll have to explore it, proceed through it, shoot things on sight, disable power sources and power down the whole thing.

Tips: do you see cables? Shoot them. Usually disables some stuff. Batteries? Shoot/reclaim them. Power sources? Dismantle it.

Personal recomendation: keep 2 EMP grenades in your base at all times. When one of those things drop on your lawn, the EMP will usually make it a cakewalk.

Then again, each one is suposed to be diferent and "unique" so some are harder than others.

>A couple of escape pods crash but MiB again leaves them to die

>A monkey self-tames but gets eaten by a cobra almost immediately

>MiB gets fucked up by squirrels and a cassowary and spends two days on the verge of death before barely surviving

>But thanks to the dense vegetation the fire spreads to the storeroom

>The rain chooses this moment to stop so there's nothing to prevent the fire from destroying everything

>Once it's over the buildings are in rubble

Why have I never heard about farming insects before? I had an infestation pop up in a prison I was making and since it was already well fortified I decided to just roll with it instead of purging them like usual and its amazing so long as you don't let it get out of control. An endless supply of jelly thats pre-cooked food that totally eliminates the need for recreation and makes for a great trade item and so much insect meat to make chemfuel out of that most of the bodies rot before I can even get to them which is perfect for the consistent power setups I like to use to avoid annoying zzzt events that batteries create.

Maybe its because I cheesed it with the android mod funneling them one by one into a corridor and all the scarabs that can move through the other insects in the corridor being incapacitated by the cold allowed me to handle it where in normal circumstances you wouldn't be able to but it was a pleasant change to the typical chicken army I use for an endless food supply.

Went around looking for mods that add more tribes and just started using Trading Economy. Liking it so far with a wide variety of tradings factions to interact with, some hostile, some neutral. Ideally, I"d prefer just a few more hostiles, just hope I can stop being such a friends-with-everybody faggot long enough, and arrange a few 'unexpected incidents'. Even if it doesn't really balance mech rates and just ends up backlogging or spawning simultaneous raids, still nice to actually expect something else for a change. And different groups nuking each other, while I sit and "let them fight", could be interesting. Just too bad this vehicles shit with Economy seems janky as hell.

Gnomoria not only has z-levels like dwarf fortress, it can also be modded (xml files).

Biggest difference is gnomoria doesn't use a top-down perspective.

I think depending on the psychotic break you already can (or try to) arrest them. I've had colonists go apeshit and start attacking prisoners and sent others to arrest them, only for it to end with the other colonists getting badly wounded as well. It's such a pain in the ass how stupid these colonists are, and when they get stressed they're even more stupid, like hunters doing nothing but hunting, researchers never researching, blood, dirt and vomit never getting cleaned up which only makes their moods worse, etc etc.

It's always advisable to play vanilla first, especially since most of the mods add more complexity to the game.

>also what are the must-have mods?

The two big ones I use are Vegetable Garden and Bad Hygiene but I also use several important smaller mods, (the most important of which is Stack XL) and I also have one that gives me a type of wall I can shoot through (otherwise there is literally no provision whatsoever for building pillboxes), another one that gives me a couple more types of weapons and turrets, another one that adds new biomes, and so on.

Same, definitely stick with vanilla until you get a better handle on things, which will better prep you for the crazier mods.

Was actually a bit reluctant to move on from vanilla after playing for half a year, since I preferred the simplicity.

But then wound up nuking one too many enemy spots, where almost every raid became mechanoids afterwards which made things repetitive pretty fast.

Decided to finally get back into the game after a while when an anon suggested "What the hack?!" and Polarisbloc, a more complex series of mods, to add some variety back in the game.

Both mods really compliment each other very well in terms of providing a more advanced security and a new working class with even harder to kill mechs you can hack that will sacrifice themselves to protect your colony as well as killing their own kind.

Essentially, fighting poison with poison now, but Polarisbloc does make things a bit more of a challenge at first but now I'm slowly getting past the point of just swiping tainted gear from the more advanced factions, the mod provides, and sacrificing large parts of my base with orbital beams and antigrains.

Another big mod, I'm still getting the hang of, is Trade Economy and Change Dresser, a smaller mod for storing cloths and customizing outfits but has a rather annoying overlap when drafting pawns.

Is hacking real deep inside mechs too lewd?

But one must have mod, I forgot to mention, would also be the Removable Mt.Rock Roof Patche.

A simple mod that converts the thick overhead mountain into the thin constructed roof type.

Which I found great for setting up well protected solar panels from being exposed, while off base.

But maybe not so great if you got a bunker set inside a mountain which would offer less protection from drop down events.

Another draw back is that it also removes the event of insect infestations inside mountains (unless you're drilling), which can be threatening but also quite useful if you know how to farm them well.

Allow Tool. Invaluable new functions for selection and orders.

Children & Pregnancy. Piggybacks on the in-game fucking system and does nothing except allow humans to get pregnant and give birth through it, meaning your colony can be self-sustaining (after, you know, nearly two decades when they grow to adulthood) as long as your people like each other enough to fuck.

Tilled Soil. Lets you build soil (from UNSMOOTHED rock, don’t smooth it) and thereafter rich soil by spending wood. Put your farms anywhere you like, and make them grow faster.

Hospitality. Guests come to visit. Build a communal guest room for them with beds and entertainment, charge them rent (or don’t), and they’ll reward you with random items if they liked their stay enough.

Stack XL. Because ten Hungry Man frozen dinners don’t take up two fucking cubic meters of space.

I have plenty more, but I can’t remember them off-hand. I like Megafauna, which adds extinct Pleistocene animals to the world. Tame them (almost impossible for predators, but if you can do it they’re better than thrumbos at defense), hunt them (fucking massive meat and leather hauls), whatever you like. It’s just more variety.

I usually try to plan most things out in advance before I get all the right resources, mainly by using the planning tool in the orders menu to help map out any future designs to have in mind. After already memorizing other designs I probably aped from here, youtube or niconico videos.

Taking the placement of geothermal generators for example, I'll figure out how to set the colony to get the most use out of them before they're in place, to avoid overloading the grid. Then for protection, once it's all planned out, there's always just swapping out weaker structures for superior ones without really having to change much drastically.

And when it comes to accommodating more colonists, I'll just slowly expand on the preexisting structures little at a time. Most likely what I picked up from designing homes in elona I already have some picture long term set in mind, then work towards that and add on.

Too bloated of a price for what didn't really seem to offer much outside of what hadn't already been tried yet with other - and probably better - mods.

Had a rimworld thread going on Fatchan and almost got into an argument with an anon who seemed like a DLC shill just because I wasn't too thrilled with

the whole borrowing ideas from preexisting mods into the content bit. Sure, they didn't pull a total Notch, regarding custom content, but still not worth

getting kiked over for. Though I admit the quests part interests me quite a bit, maybe I'll wait for more Royalty mods before pirating.

You can generate a new world and go to it with the mod, only problem is that beyond changing the average temperature theres not much reason to do it. You can see in the latest image that I moved to a really hot planet and it just doesn't change much beyond reducing the amount of biomes you have to choose from.

If there was a mod that added more options to the world generation so you can have worlds with weird alien biomes and wildlife and an atmosphere thats permanently toxic or something that would definitely make it worth doing but I'd imagine it would be a huge undertaking to make, maybe they have something like that in mind for the next DLC.

>atmosphere thats permanently toxic

I'd like the idea of a toxic hellscape, where you develop tech to acclimate yourself to the climate but since tech has limitations, you could slowly alter your cells, based on the alien inhabitants,

mutating yourself to adapt naturally to certain environments but forging the means of human habitations as a trade-off.

>spend all my silver to buy an animal pulser

>wait for the next big caravan

>activate it to make all the wild animals come and attack them

>the traders animals attack the traders, the traders now hate me

>think the traders will raid me instantly and hide

>later walk out of the mountain to see silver, components cloth, food and corpses everywhere

>hurry and put it all inside, base is now crammed, have to dig out more space

>all safe and sound inside

>look at wealth, it jumped by like 40%

>sieged warning pops up for the first time

first time playing in mountain. i saw surprised to find pockets of non-mountain roof.

not all factions except a tribe hate me

the problem is that between me and the siege is one of those crashed robot ships that gives me -50 constantly in mood, i never got around to killing them. i feel screwed.

so anyway, how do i make the kids from RJW look like kids?
