It looks like it's ripping off Trails of Cold Steel, but at the same time I'm really worried they're going to censor it to hell like they did with Fire Emblem Fates. FYI the school setting is kind of a ruse. It's only the first part of the game. Then there's a five year timeskip and things get a lot darker. All the factions go to war with each other, with you siding with the house you agreed to be the teacher of at the beginning of the game. You will fight and likely kill your other former students against you. There is no happy "I pick everyone" choice this time where everyone gets to live. Each house has a pretty different campaign and I'm pretty sure the Black Eagle's actually have two, with a route split in the middle of theirs. It's certainly not completely free of all the trappings of modern Fire Emblem, but plotwise it seems to be a massive step up by all accounts of the leaks.

You have to fulfill certain stat requirements during the school part of the game and when you do you can poach students from other houses (though obviously not the lords or their second in command). Personally, I don't mind waifu and husbando shit being present in the games, as long as it's a side system rather than a core part of the game. I think supports are a decent mechanic, when well-implemented; it's pretty cool to imagine two best friends fighting back-to-back on a battlefield and kicking ass and taking names while doing it. Oh no, I know exactly why Black Eagles splits. It's because Edelgard wants t destroy the church, eliminate crests and more or less go to war with fucking everyone. You either follow her or stay behind and do the church route instead. If you stay behind every Black Eagle (and everyone you've managed to recruit) comes with you except Edelgard and Hubert. You kill Edelgard in this route. She's outright the final fucking boss of Dimitri's route and you probably kill her in Claude's route too, though I'm not entirely sure. You have to understand Edelgard's route is basically the villain path. Kinda. Villain with good intentions. But very, very extreme.

It's worth noting, though, some of the a-rank paired endings for same sex characters are pretty damn gay. Manuela (who isn't even a yuri option) and Dorothea essentially give up on men and go dyke for each other in their paired ending for instance.
