The game would have made a great survival horror, even if all they focused on were the Gyaos and Gamera, since Gyaos specifically hunt humans and Gamera's destruction of them can level cities. Young enough Gyaos can be killed with human weapons and it'd be fun having a sort of time mechanism; as the game goes on, Gyaos get larger and when they are large enough, Gamera shows up. This makes Gyaos harder/impossible to kill and then the possibility of being locked off from areas because of Gamera nuking a Gyaos blowing away a building.

Just watched Gojira 1954. I was pretty impressed how timeless it was. It's very obvious it was filmed in an era we can only dream of, yet it barely felt dated at all. The cinematography is excellent. It's also a photograph of an era.
I do have reservations, editing isn't on point, there are some noticeable non-sequiturs. and I think it's a mistake to have everyone fear Godzilla well before his genuine appearance just because some fisherman babbled. It's more powerful when the population reacts to ongoing disasters.
But I'm being petty here. Gojira expresses a nation confused, fear of this new force called radiation, and the sheer loss the Japanese people felt at the time perfectly. Godzilla is such a menace everyone wants him gone, but any supreme weapon could make something even worse. I can't rate it perfect, but yes, Gojira does deserve such a legacy.

Yuuuup, it’s weird how no other film in the series managed to capture that feeling again. In showa he basically became a toku hero, in heisei they tried to take him back to a destructive force of nature but still kept it a bit over the top. Shin Godzilla had a good start but towards the end it became a little to upbeat perhaps in an effort to counter that crazy awakening scene.
Then of course you have the latest iteration of Godzilla who is somewhere in between that showa hero and heisei destructive force, which isn’t bad. Also, I loved the call back to the original film in King of the Monsters with the use of the Oxygen Destroyer.

>story follows grieving father and mother who lost their son in the last fight, meaning the Kaijus directly affected them
>because of this Mark withdraws into his work and leaves his family to hide from the grief, meanwhile his hatred for kaijus festers
>because he leaves Emma she becomes emotionally unstable and where as Mark hates kaijus for his son’s death, Emma tries to find meaning in her son’s death and almost worships them
>their daughter, having lived with her mother, naturally takes her side but can also tell something is off which conflicts her

It would be very interesting since Biollante is actually one of the peaceful monsters, despite showing up in games as an antagonistic monster of destruction. The combination of human, plant, and Godzilla cells is an interesting thing to tackle. That said the use of the oxygen destroyer missile inside the water and the "flies" around the remaining Ghidorah head give the impression that Destroyah may show up in G vs Kong and will be the first true "mutant" monster of this universe. I admit, the idea of G and K working together to fight something like Destroyah is a thrilling idea.
Zilla's chapter in the book is amazing. "If even one infant survives… No, if even one egg survives, the whole thing will start again. The tactics of what they do in the setting really shows the writer knows how to make use of the creature's strengths and talents.

It would be a lot more like Attack on Titan since the humanoids were actually rather large.
Fun fact, the design of the humanoids was actually based on the concept of the buddhist concept of the "perfected soul", where the soul becomes an almost alien gray sort of androgynous being with an opened third eye in the forehead. The humanoids lack any eyes where the human would be and instead have a gaping hole where the third eye would be and are "corrupted" with Godzilla's spines.

I wouldn’t hold out to much hope for future films. I’m thinking this is one of those movies that just magically managed to avoid the average Hollywood degeneracy and slip through the cracks falling into the hands of a director who was not only a legit fan of Godzilla, but understood what made the character work.
it’s the first movie in years I’ll be buying a physical copy of and I’m trying to track down a movie poster as well.

I'll be straight, I'm a Dougherty fan first and a Godzilla fan second. I loved Krampus and Trick' r Treat and I wanted to see how he would do as the latest incarnation of the "get a small time director and get him to do a blockbuster" meme. So in preparation, I set out to watch Godzilla movies across all eras, enjoyed them all in their own way, but it paid out when I saw the actual movie.
I was satisfied to see Dougherty's style at work, his way of making chuckle-worthy moments in a non-comedic film, his love of designing monsters, and his knack for sound design. He handled the profoundly silly hollow earth shit the perfect way, going genuine, but with a character going "I don't care how retarded this is, I WAS RIGHT!".
But seeing the monsters fight was just satisfying on a primal level, even having just watched snippets on the franchise. I'm not sure how to express it, really, but that final scene was the best I've seen in theaters in a long time. How the fuck are they planning to top it ?
So yeah, I'm in full agreement Dougherty made the very best Godzilla movie he could do, and there's pretty much no way any western Godzilla is going to top it going forward.
It's not like I'm easy to please, either, Alita Battle Angel had good word of mouth and I grew up with Gunnm and I hated the everloving fuck out of that piece of shit. But King of the Monsters? It's the first film in a decade I'm tempted to go watch in the theater again.

The monsterarts figures are pretty nice but they are a bit to small for the price. Still, Godzilla shit only seems to appreciate in price so I’d say go for the figures you’re interested in just make sure to watch a review on them first to avoid disappointment.

And cool, that was the one I was leaning towards as well. I can see why every theater I went to was such a stickler about handing these posters out. At first I thought they were just being stingy but I guess even printing your own posters isn’t cheap.

The thing with Shin Godzilla is that it's not really fair to compare it to any of the other movies. They have completely different intents. Godzilla movies are typically pure entertainment, and often silly. Shin Godzilla distilled the political message of the original, whereas King of the Monsters just embraced the silliness of anything but the original.
I love both for different reasons. Shin Godzilla is a genuine oscar-worthy movie, but it's not really about godzilla. He's just a mindless beast in this one. But in King of the Monsters, he's the protagonist, he's the hero. He's the King.

The best thing about Godzilla is that it did so many different things it has something for everyone. It has no black sheep (1998 american godzilla excepted but it doesn't really count), just things things you have to be in the right mood to enjoy. So what are you in the mood for, anon?

What about 2014 American Godzilla? I remember that one sucking really really bad, because the entire movie was just one boring human drama thing after another with all the monster shit at the very end, and even then it wasn't very good monster shit. I mean it was good CG but the choreography was just plodding and boring. Also the military were just retarded throughout the entire thing.

I have never seen a Godzilla film but I have a dumb idea for a scene in a Godzilla where he meets Mothra. I would have them have a conversation which would be told in subtitbles only.
>State your name lumbering gorira from the sea
>You who has trespassed my domain and molested my wards
>Know that I am the mighty Mothra,
>I have guarded these lands and its inhabitants since times immemorial
>to me you are but a kujira
>and know that all kujira that wash upon my shores die upon my shores
<Oh spawn of Motrha, decedent of the protector of these islands
<I know your name
<And I know you are but a shadow of times immemoiral
<What hubris you show as you berates me with broken speech and slurred words
<I am a true being of antiquity
<I speak the language of old as it was spoken in antiquary
<I knew the Mothra of antiquity
<You who has forgotten to pass the knowledge of my name on upon rebirth, are not worth of knowing my name let alone my domain
<I know not what this Godzilla you speak of is, but if you wish to give a name to your demise then so be it
<You may call me Godzilla
I would further have Godzilla make the argument that Mortha has no obligation to protect the humans and argue that the humans have destroyed the lands that her forebearer was to protect.

I’d say the composition on the scenes is worth something. You can pause just about any scene in the movie and it looks like a well done painting. The finale is also pretty good but it doesn’t make up for the rest of the boring movie.
I still can’t believe they missed the easy opportunity to have Bryan Cranston’s character live and instead of just having a walking camera treading across the world to get back to his family, you could have had a father and son reuniting and forgiving one another. It’s a bit generic but it would have been something.

I don't know why, but the one thing that kept sticking out to me was "why the fuck are they carrying guns? All that's going to do is make the nuke delivery harder, because it's dead weight! Do they think that the small arms will do jack shit to fucking kaiju?"

I don't like 2014, but mainly because it's boring. It's still a Godzilla movie, it's respectful of its japanese roots. So while I don't recommend it, I can't dismiss it either.

Offing Cranston when they knew he was as the peak of popularity and sold the movie to many by himself was a truly inexplicable decision. It was probably a factor for the greatly superior King of the Monsters flopping.

I never feel right trying to judge designs, but I do love KOTM's Mothra, Shin, Godzilla millenium in general and Zilla, he's not Godzilla but as a giant T-rex he's pretty damn stylish

Actually, let me revise that. GMK had some great scenes, but I don't think it holds up that well as a whole. I really don't know what should take fifth place. I'm hesitating between Against Mechagodzilla (for being not really creative but really solid) and versus Mechagodzilla (for being chuckle-the movie). GMK drags the fuck on and feels like a waste of novel ideas.
