If you dig mecha at all, I'd recommend picking up Armored Trooper VOTOMs, very similar themes most of the time to both that and AC.
Also one of the few times in which I think *both* cases are good. The retro 50s style works very well, as these are giant clunky robo-suits. So doing them up like astronauts is very fitting.
The localisation is clearly done by someone who appreciated both sci-fi styles, and wants it to come together. (And given the series is about as "near future" as AC too, it does thematically fit within that Asimov-y "dawn of space exploration" vibe, no fancy Gundam bullshit here! Half the starships look like flying junk yards, and dealing with mundane mechanical and logistical problems is common. Chirico also does have a tendency to go full on literal Rambo, at times.)
It's pretty much the "anti gundam" in setting and tone.
I will say the only flaw I can recall is the action in the original saga doesn't always measure up, had kind of a literalist interpretation of manga panels, which doesn't always transfer well, so it's action aged somewhat poorly.
Most ridiculous example of this is there's one part where Chirico jams a railroad spike in his foot, then spins and shoots while mysteriously not getting hit. Absolutely goofy. Anime doesn't set up this is in near zero G beforehand, or that the author mentioned John Woo as inspiration for a similar sequence in the manga. (So he wasn't just sitting in place and spinning, but the animators missed the memo, and if he tried that freely he'd have thrown himself off the platform)
(There are also unusual spinoffs like Pailsen Files where it's little to no fighting at all it's purely concerned with the political situation. Franchise does lots of risky shit like that)

I would not exactly call her low damage, she isn't weak in that regard like say Prinz. She just isn't super high damage. HE is all over later worlds so she makes one of the best tanks. She has two main flaws, no barrage of any kind and being a collab ship prevents her from running in nation buffing fleets. Her stat line beats every other CA that isn't a PR ship. Also, if you want more damage you can run the ribbon accessory from this event on one of your ships to make them count as an Ai ship.

Here is some general advice for what guns to keep an eye out for. Purple Twin 150mm (TbtsK C/36) is the go to main gun for most CLs. It's not quite best in slot, but it's very close and far more easily available. Blue can work as an early game stopgap until you get purples. HE shooting CLs like Belfast want Triple 155mm (3rd Year Type), ideally gold but purples work until then. Purple and gold Twin 127mm (5"/38 Mk38) are good for DDs, there are a couple other options depending on niche though. Twin 203mm (SK C/34) are the standard for CAs, the higher the rarity the better. Roon is good for 2 reasons, main gun+1 on a ship with high stats and crazy survivability without sacrificing too much damage. Changing between HE/AP isn't that big a deal on a CA, the damage modifiers don't change much. The problem with Tirpitz is she does not offer much, all she has are weak torpedoes and a skill that prevents you from running her with other BBs. 30% more damage sounds great until you realize a good barrage often more than triples a salvo's damage and does not require other ships to be the only BB.

Barrages are typically too RNG for me to not be let down by them. I've seen shit just part the red sea and miss every shot with a big 7 or a hood fall too often. Especially if they decide for some random reason to make it like a 25% or something.
And like I said, Roon is good simply by virtue of her stats more than her skill, the constant swapping can hurt her dps depending on the fleet comp. 42% reload is also nothing to scoff at but it takes a bit to get going which means she isn't great for farming, which is all you have left to do by the time you actually get a roon online and ready to go.

KGV is great. Probably not top tier but just below it. With 356mm quads she ends up staggering her salvos and barrage in a way that makes her excellent for clearing mobs. She does poorly against bosses(relatively speaking) due to the high spread of the 356 even with her skill it but in a clearing fleet she excels. Alternatively you can run her with a more standard BB gun and use her like you would any other BB with a timed barrage and high stats.
